Contrary to popular belief, Marvel Studios didn't invent the post-credits scene, but it's true that their superhero movies did popularise them, to the point where most blockbuster audiences now wait automatically until the credits have ended, just in case there's an extra scene that they don't want to miss.
In a bid to distance themselves from their nearest rival, Warner Bros. deliberately chose to not use post-credit scenes for their first two DCEU films, Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, with just a few weeks left until we finally see the likes of Deadshot and Killer Croc in action, DC have revealed that the PG-13 rated Suicide Squad will feature a mid-credits scene after all, which comes as a relief to those of us who get antsy waiting longer for Marvel's post-credit scenes.

Little is currently known about the Suicide Squad mid credits scene, aside from the fact that it will reportedly contain a pivotal plot point, which suggests that DC will use this moment to directly link Suicide Squad with their upcoming movies, rather than just insert a throwaway gag. With that in mind, join us as we speculate what the end of Suicide Squad could mean for the DCEU at large and whether we'll finally see a worthy version of Constantine on the big screen.
1. Wonder Woman
The next film scheduled to be released by DC is Patty Jenkin's Wonder Woman, so it would make sense to link Suicide Squad with the Amazonian Princess somehow, although this will be a struggle if the official trailer is anything to go by.
After all, aside from flashbacks, it looks like Wonder Woman's cinematic debut is set entirely during the events of WWI, decades before the Suicide Squad forms, although there's a chance that the film could end in the present day, setting up her involvement with the Justice League further.
If the filmmakers behind Suicide Squad do manage to somehow link the mid credits scene with Wonder Woman, it's most likely to involve some kind of magical talisman or even a new character who possesses ties to both the mythological aspects of Themyscira and the supernatural elements that Suicide Squad introduces into the DCEU.
2. Justice League
What's far more likely though is that the mid credits scene in Suicide Squad will set up Zack Snyder's Justice League. We've always known that Batman would play a role in Ayer's ensemble film and now that the Flash appears in a confirmed cameo too, it makes perfect sense to feature either one of those heroes in a direct link to the future Justice League film.
Rumors suggest that Batman could discuss the formation of the League with Amanda Waller in the mid-credits scene, but problem here is that this is far too similar to Tony Stark's discussion with Nick Fury in the MCU, so we're hoping that Lex Luthor's incarceration in Arkham Asylum will play here instead, setting him up as one of the main villains.
Alternatively, here's an idea that you can file under the 'never going to happen but would be fricking awesome' category: John Constantine appears to clean up the supernatural mess left in the aftermath of the Enchantress's rampage and suggests that he'll need to recruit some friends to help next time. Boom. Justice League Dark.
3. Suicide Squad 2/Batman
Of course, Justice League isn't the only team-up movie lined up on DC's schedule. Long before Suicide Squad's final release date drew near, Warner Bros. already confirmed that a sequel is in the wings, so there's also a strong possibility that the newly announced mid-credits scene will feature one of the new villains who will be recruited into the squad for the sequel.
Current rumours are pointing to a cinematic appearance from Slade Wilson, one of the main villains from the Arrow TV show who is more famously known as Deathstroke. During a recent interview about the future of the mercenary on CW, executive producer Marc Guggenheim said that the character is currently tied up in another DC project and it's hard to think of one more likely than Suicide Squad.
If Deathstroke doesn't make the cut though, there's plenty of other villains who could replace any one of the characters who will inevitably die in Suicide Squad, including the likes of King Shark and Count Vertigo. Batman's involvement in the film could also mean that more members of his Rogues Gallery could escape Arkham Asylum, ready to take the centre stage in the Dark Knight's solo film, including Poison Ivy or the Riddler.
4. Harley Quinn
While any one of these movies could be explicitly referred to at the end of Suicide Squad, it's become clear that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is already the breakout star. After all, no other other member of the team has been given their own solo film yet, so there's a strong chance that the mid credits scene could set up Harley Quin's own spin-off movie, drawing upon one of the many madcap adventures that she's taken in the comics.
Obviously, Harley's role in the final cut of Suicide Squad will play a huge part in determining the focus of this extra scene, but if the rumours are true and Quinn does betray her puddin' to save her teammates, then we could perhaps see the Joker begin to plot his revenge on the Cupid of Crime, giving us out first indication of what her solo movie could actually be about.
Whether Harley leaves the Joker for good or even ends up working alongside him, we'll still be happy as long as Margot Robbie continues to nail the role and perform her own stunts.
Whatever happens in the mid credits scene of Suicide Squad, let's just hope that the Joker doesn't get the last laugh, because, quite frankly, it's scary as hell, no matter who's playing him.
