2015-12-23

Well 2015 has seen five new additions to the top ten list of highest grossing films of all time. It's seen incredible franchises like Marvel and Fast & Furious continue their domination of the box office, while the great franchises of the past return with a vengeance in the forms of Jurassic World, Mad Max: Fury Road and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

But it's all about to become irrelevant, because 2015 is at it's end, the final moments of the year have arrived, and while we have a lot to remember from the past 12 months, but let's forget all that while we look instead to the next 12, and the great films coming out over the course of them!

January

The Forest (January 8th)

The Forest stars Natalie Dormer as a woman trying to discover the fate of her twin, who was last seen entering a forest in Japan locally known as "Suicide Forest".

Ride Along 2 (January 15th)

Starring: Kevin Hart, Ice Cube, Olivia Munn.

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart return as the cop and his brother-in-law who blunder their way through major crimes. This time Ben (Kevin Hart) has to head to Miami shortly before his wedding day in order to help James take down a group of drug dealers supplying Atlanta.

The 5th Wave (January 22nd)

Starring: Chloe Grace Moretz, Liev Schreiber, Maria Bello.

The earth has been left devastated by four waves of alien attacks, and Cassie (Chloe Grace Moretz) is on the run, trying to save her younger brother as the 5th, and most deadly, wave arrives.

Natalie Portman stars as a mother who is forced to ask her ex for help in saving her outlaw husband from a gang out to get him.

The Finest Hours (January 29th)

Starring: Chris Pine, Eric Bana, Ben Foster.

Chris Pine stars as a Coast Guard Captain who is forced to take his ragtag crew out in the middle of the worst storm ever to save a tanker whose crew is having to hold on in horrific conditions until they arrive, and it's all based on a true story.

Kung Fu Panda 3 (January 29th)

Starring: Jack Black, Bryan Cranston, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan.

Jack Black returns as Po, who is forced to deal with a supernatural threat as he discovers his true heritage.

February

Hail, Caesar! (February 5th)

Starring: Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum.

Josh Brolin stars as a Hollywood fixer who has to gather the stars of a studio together to help find the kidnapped star of their next big film.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (February 5th)

Starring: Matt Smith, Lily James, Lena Headey, Charles Dance.

A most fascinating take on the classic tale where the challenges of different classes falling in love is put on hold to deal with an army of zombies.

Zoolander 2 (February 12th)

Starring: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Olivia Munn, Penelope Cruz.

Derek and Hansel return to modelling as their arch nemesis returns from prison to challenge them once again.

Deadpool (February 12th)

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, Ed Skrein.

Ryan Reynolds finally gets the film he has dreamed of for years as he gets into the red costume as Deadpool. After a rogue experiment, Wade Wilson finds himself with incredible healing powers and suits up as the Merc with the Mouth.

Gods of Egypt (February 26th)

Starring: Gerard Butler, Rufus Sewell, Geoffrey Rush, Chadwick Boseman.

In what is now predicted to be one of 2016's major flops for it's controversial casting choices, Gods of Egypt tells the story of a common thief and a God trying to stop another God from taking over Egypt.

Knight of Cups (March 4th)

Christian Bale stars as a screenwriter trying to survive life in Hollywood, no matter how much it affects the relationships with those his loves.

London Has Fallen (March 4th)

Moving from the White House to London, Mike Banning has to deal with a plot to assassinate all the World Leaders attending a funeral.

Allegiant (March 18th)

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Naomi Watts, Miles Teller.

Finishing off the dystopian futuristic series, Beatrice and Tobias go outside the fence and are taken in by the Bureau of Genetic Welfare.

Zootopia (March 25th)

Starring: Idris Elba, Jason Bateman, Ginnifer Goodwin, Alan Tudyk.

Zootopia (or Zootropolis in the U.S) is about a city of animals, where a Fox (Jason Bateman) goes on the run after being framed for a crime he didn't commit.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25th)

Starring: Henry Cavill, Jesse Eisenberg, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams.

In the long-awaited sequel to Man of Steel, the world is still reeling from the events of Superman and Zod's battle in Metropolis, while the Batman (Ben Affleck) slowly turns against the Man of Steel, leading to an epic conflict.

The Boss (April 8th)

Melissa McCarthy stars as Michelle Darnell, a former high flyer in the business world who, after a prison sentence, is trying to get back to the top in a number of hilarious ways.

The Jungle Book (April 15th)

Starring: Idris Elba, Bill Murray, Christopher Walken, Scarlett Johansson.

A retelling of the classic tale, with a whole lot of special effects required. An all star cast voices the well known animals, including Idris Elba as Shere Khan, Christopher Walken as King Louie, Bill Murray as Baloo, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera and Scarlett Johansson as Kaa.

The Huntsman: Winters War (April 22nd)

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt.

A sequel to 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, Chris Hemsworth returns to save the kingdom from a pair of sisters attempting to take it over.

Eddie the Eagle (April 29th)

Starring: Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman, Christopher Walken.

Based on the true story, this could be considered this generation's version of Cool Runnings, as a hopeful ski jumper mentored by a legend in the sport as he tries to reach the Olympics, no matter how many people stand in his way.

Ratchet and Clank (April 29th)

Starring: Bella Thorne, Sylvester Stallone, James Arnold Taylor, David Kaye.

One of many video game adaptations coming out in 2016, Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two heroes trying to stop a villain destroying every planet in their galaxy.

Captain America: Civil War (May 6th)

The long awaited film adaptation of the famous Marvel Civil War story, where Captain America takes on Iron Man over a political firestorm, with the other superheroes of the world forced to take sides.

Another adaptation, this time of the game Angry Birds, following the adventures of three birds who investigate a group of pigs invading their island.

Based on the true life story of CIA operative Edward Snowden, who leaked thousands of state secrets and confidential papers.

Follows a Private Eye trying to investigate the apparent suicide of a porn star in the seventies.

X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27th)

Starring: James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender.

Follows a new set of younger mutants as an ancient evil awakens, endangering the entire world. Finishes off the trilogy started by X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Alice Through the Looking Glass (May 27th)

Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter.

A sequel to 2010's Alice in Wonderland sees Alice return to the colourful characters she met in the first film.

Warcraft (June 3rd)

Starring: Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Daniel Wu, Dominic Cooper.

An adaptation of the well known video game, in which two worlds fates are intertwined, and two races must learn to work together in order to survive the threat.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (June 3rd)

Starring: Johnny Knoxville, Megan Fox, Stephen Amell, Will Arnett.

Following on from the events of the first film, the turtles are now forced to deal with new threats, as well as new friends.

The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist (June 10th)

Starring: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farminga, Frances O'Connor, Simon McBurney.

The Warren's travel to England to deal with a very different kind of threat, all based on the case files from the real life Warrens.

Now You See Me: The Second Act (June 10th)

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Daniel Radcliffe, Mark Ruffalo.

We return to the Four Horsemen's story as they are joined by Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Radcliffe for a whole new magical adventure. Anyone else find it ironic that Daniel Radcliffe is in another film about magic?

Finding Dory (June 17th)

Starring: Ellen DeGeneres, Idris Elba, Diane Keaton, Albert Brooks.

The sequel to Finding Nemo finds Dory still without any memory of her family, but still determined to go on a quest to find them.

Central Intelligence (June 17th)

In an awesome buddy team up film, Dwayne Johnson stars as a kick-ass agent forced to team up with incompetent Kevin Hart to inevitably save the day.

Independence Day: Resurgence (June 24th)

Starring: Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Joey King.

The sequel we never knew we were desperate for, the aliens are returning twenty years later to try and finish what they started and destroy the world! Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman return from the original cast to save the day again.

The BFG (July 1st)

Starring: Ruby Barnhill, Bill Hader, Mark Rylance, Penelope Wilton.

Another adaptation of one of the classic Road Dahl books, this time following a child who is taken from the orphanage she lives in by a, you guessed it, Big Friendly Giant.

The Purge: Beginnings (July 1st)

Starring: Elizabeth Mitchell, Frank Grillo, Ethan Phillips, David Aaron Baker.

Third time around the Purge series is going right back to the very first Purge to see how it went the first time around!

The Legend of Tarzan (July 1st)

Starring: Alexander Skarsgaard, Margot Robbie, Samuel L Jackson, Christoph Waltz.

Telling a very different story to the one you know, this time Tarzan has already settled in England and is forced to return to the jungle to save it.

The Secret Life of Pets (July 8th)

Starring: Ellie Kemper, Kevin Hart, Steve Coogan, Eric Stonestreet.

From the guys behind the Despicable Me films comes the pet equivilant of Toy Story, telling us about what our pets really get up to when we're away.

Ghostbusters (July 15th)

Starring: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Chris Hemsworth.

A reboot of the original team that "ain't afraid of no ghosts" sees an all female cast, with Chris Hemsworth as their secretary.

Star Trek: Beyond (July 22nd)

Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, Simon Pegg.

Get back on board the Starship Enterprise, and then get off again because it's been destroyed and her crew is left stranded on a planet fighting for their lives.

Ice Age: Collision Course (July 22nd)

Starring: Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Simon Pegg.

Go back for the fifth time to see Manny, Diego and Sid deal with another problem caused by Scrat and his acorns, this time involving a spaceshipn and a meteor hurled towards the earth.

Untitled Bourne Sequel (July 29th)

Starring: Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander.

Not much is known about the fifth Bourne film yet, not even the title, but we know Matt Damon will return as the titular character he became famous for.

August

Suicide Squad (August 5th)

Follows a team of super villains being brought together by a shady organisation to save the day, no matter how much they hate the idea.

Pete's Dragon (August 12th)

Starring: Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Robert Redford, Karl Urban.

Reboot of the classic Disney tale about a boy and his imaginary pet dragon.

Sausage Party (August 12th)

Starring: Kristen Wiig, Paul Rudd, Salma Hayek, James Franco.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg team up once again to bring a story about a sausage trying to find out where he came from.

Kubo and the two strings (August 19th)

An animated film about a girl whose life is turned upside down by an ancient ghost, who is then forced to find a magical suit of armor amidst the many monsters and creatures chasing her.

Mechanic: Resurrection (August 26th)

Starring: Jason Statham, Jessica Alba, Tommy Lee Jones, Michelle Yeoh.

Jason Statham returns as the assassin people hire to make deaths look like accidents. This time, he has to do three such killings to save the woman he loves.

September

Patient Zero (September 2nd)

Starring: Natalie Dormer, Stanley Tucci, Matt Smith, John Bradley.

Another zombie film, although this time one of the survivors is able to speak their language, and leads the others left alive on a hunt for the first patient and a possible cure.

Storks (September 23rd)

Starring: Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammar.

A film about the Storks who deliver babies, or used to. Now they work for a global delivery company, and when one accidentally makes a baby he is forced to find it a new home before he is caught.

The Magnificent Seven (September 23rd)

Starring: Chris Pratt, Denzel Washington, Matt Bomer, Ethan Hawke.

A reboot of the classic film where seven gunslingers are brought together to stop a gang of bandits raiding a village in the west.

Deepwater Horizon (September 30th)

Starring: Kurt Russell, Dylan O'Brien, Mark Wahlberg, Gina Rodriguez.

Focuses on the oil rig that caused the biggest spill ever in 2010 in the gulf of Mexico.

October

The Accountant (October 7th)

Starring: Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jeffrey Tambor, Jon Bernthal, JK Simmons.

Revolves around an accountant who un-cooks the books for illicit clients.

Inferno (October 14th)

Starring: Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones, Irrfan Kahan, Omar Sy.

Adapting another book in the Dan Brown "Robert Langdon" series, this time Tom Hanks has to deal with a set of puzzles in Italy after being accused of a crime.

Gambit (October 16th)

Starring: Channing Tatum, Lea Seydoux.

The famous mutant finally gets a solo film with Channing Tatum as the lead.

Jack Reacher: Never go back (October 21st)

Starring: Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Danica Yarosh, Patrick Heusinger.

Tom Cruise returns for a second run at Jack Reacher, an ex-military ghost who solves crimes under no jurisdiction but his own.

Underworld 5 (October 28th)

Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Theo James, Charles Dance, Bradley James.

Kate Beckinsale returns as the vampiress Seline, this time trying to find her hybrid lover before he kills anyone.

November

Trolls (November 4th)

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake.

A film about troll dolls can only bring a lot of musical and comedic fun for the whole family.

Doctor Strange (November 4th)

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Another Marvel hero enters the MCU, this time the Sorcerer Supreme Stephen Strange, in the form of Benedict Cumberbatch.

Why Him? (November 11th)

Starring: Bryan Cranston, James Franco, Zoey Deutch.

A film about a father forced to compete for his daughter's affections with her rich boyfriend.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (November 18th)

Returning to the wizarding world of Harry Potter, this time in America where Newt Scamander goes and has to track down a number of creatures.

The Founder (November 23rd)

Starring: Michael Keaton, Patrick Wilson, Linda Cardellini, Nick Offerman.

The story of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc, and his rise to the top of a worldwide empire.

The Great Wall (November 23rd)

Starring: Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, Willem Defoe, Andy Lau.

Involves a mystery surrounding the building of the great wall of China.

Moana (November 23rd)

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Auli'i Crabalho, Alan Tudyk.

The next of the beloved Disney Princesses, Moana is a girl with navigational talents who tries to find a mythical island.

December

Rogue One (December 15th)

Starring: Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Forest Whitaker.

Set in the Star Wars universe between episodes three and four, Rogue One tells the story of the team of rebels who set out to steal the plans to the Death Star.

Assassins Creed (December 21st)

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Irons.

Another video game adaptation, this time of the popular series set around an ancient group of assassins and their descendant, who goes through their memories to take down an evil corporation in the present.

Passengers (December 23rd)

Starring: Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence.

A sci-fi drama and romance starring these two can be nothing short of amazing, even if Jennifer Lawrence had to get incredibly drunk before feeling ready to film the sex scene.

Sing (December 23rd)

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Reese Witherspoon.

About a Koala who gathers his friends to try and save his theatre from shutting down.

Jumanji (December 23rd)

Starring: TBA

A reboot of the classic 1995 film starring Robin Williams, not much is known yet about casting or how similar it will be to the original.
