As the DCEU is slowly coming together, the upcoming release of Wonder Woman is raising expectations on plenty of fronts: First female superhero solo film for #DC, first live-action movie for the character on the big screen, and only the fourth installment of the DCEU after Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
Even in the polarizing Batman v Superman, Gal Gadot's Diana Prince, a.k.a. Wonder Woman, was pretty much universally praised, so we can't wait to see her kick ass in her own movie before the #JusticeLeague comes together. During an interview for Keeping Up With the Joneses, Gal Gadot briefly commented on her role as Wonder Woman, and what she felt the character represented:
"Wonder Woman is different. On this film, we went back to Diana's backstory to her history, her coming of age. How did Diana become Wonder Woman? But with this character, what I love about her so much is that her agenda is love. It's not about fighting, it's not about who is stronger than whom; it's not about women versus men. It's about love, and acceptance of others. She stands for love, justice and compassion."
While it fits into the DCEU, Wonder Woman is indeed a bit of a standalone movie, and a different kind of character from the heroes we've seen on the big screen until now.

Lynda Carter, the actress who played Wonder Woman in the iconic '70s TV series, talked to Fox Magazine about the new movie. She's more than happy to see Gal Gadot taking the character forward:
"I want it to move to the next generation of women, and inspire the next generation of women."

Three new Wonder Woman figures have been unveiled at New York Comic-Con, featuring Steve and Diana, and Diana on her horse.
Wonder Woman could be set in three different time periods:
Rumors are suggesting Wonder Woman will be divided into three chapters taking place in three different time periods: First her days on Themyscira, then her fight in World War I, to conclude with present day and her meeting her future Justice League co-members. While this led fans to wonder whether Chris Pine would appear in more than one time period, for example as Steve Trevor and Trevor's grandfather, the actor denied to the Huffington Post that he was playing any other character than Steve.

It's awesome to see so many different versions of her sword, called the Sword of Athena, goddess of war. The final version they went with features Greek writing along the rim, reportedly a quote from Joseph Campbell: "Life is killing life all the time and so the goddess kills herself in the sacrifice of her own animal."
The woman in the mask teases her villain role:
The actress playing the mysterious woman in the mask featured in the Wonder Woman trailer, Elena Anaya, teased her villainous role in an interview with Spanish website SensaCine, translated by Batman-News:
"Well, it was a small role in this big ensemble, but it is an important character in the story. It's directed by Patty Jenkins, then there's Gal Gadot as our main lead, Chris Pine as her co-lead and I'm going to be a big nightmare for the two of them."
While we still don't have confirmation of her exact role most theories favor Doctor Poison it's exciting to know she'll be a serious obstacle in Diana's path.
Wonder Woman Movie Trailer

The first trailer for Wonder Woman was released at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, and while it's not revealing much in terms of story, we do get a great sense of the movie's feel mainly, epic action scenes. Plus, after seeing Wonder Woman's bracelets in action in Batman v Superman, we also get to see how the rest of her iconic weapons work: sword, shield, and most importantly the Lasso of Truth.
Wonder Woman Movie Release Date
Wonder Woman's release date is set on June 2, 2017 in the US and the UK, a few months before Justice League on November 17. A few countries such as Brazil and Russia will see the movie on June 1, but there will be no earlier release date so no spoiler issues here!
Wonder Woman Movie Plot
Set during World War I, the plot of Wonder Woman follows Diana, an Amazon princess who lives on Themyscira until the day a pilot named Steve Trevor crashes on the island. Trained for the art of war, she follows him back into the world of men who the Amazon were once meant to protect but her goodwill is going to be put to the test.
Although she was already introduced in Batman v Superman, this is Wonder Woman's official movie entrance into the DCEU, explaining her background and why she seems so reluctant to fight alongside her fellow heroes in Batman v Superman. We also got a glimpse of her World War I days in this film, so we know it's a defining time for her.

Diana Prince/Wonder Woman: One of DC's most iconic characters, Wonder Woman starts out as a princess on the Amazon island of Themyscira. In the movie version, her mother is Queen Hippolyta and she was brought to life by Zeus, essentially making her a semi-goddess. She's trained for war and possesses many powers, but her redeeming quality lies in her heart.
Steve Trevor: An American pilot, Steve Trevor was fighting in World War I when he crashed on Themyscira and met Diana. He eventually becomes her love interest.
Queen Hippolyta: The Queen of Themyscira, Queen Hippolyta is Diana's mother and mentor.

Wonder Woman Movie Spinoff
There are no direct sequels or spinoffs announced for Wonder Woman, but as a part of the DCEU, the film fits into a timeline with Batman v Superman and Justice League: While her solo movie goes back to her origins and the first time she mingled with the rest of humanity, Batman v Superman sees her disillusioned and reticent to join the battle. Then in Justice League, she agrees to join Bruce Wayne/Batman in his effort to bring together a team of heroes.

The two main candidates are Ares and the masked woman we spotted in the trailer. Danny Huston's character, which is still unconfirmed on the movie's IMDb page, might very well be the god of War. It would make sense to introduce him in Wonder Woman, since he's not only Diana's ultimate enemy, but also thrives in a context of war perfect for the World War I background of the movie. However, the mysterious aura of the woman in the mask suggests she'll definitely have a role to play in the obstacles awaiting Wonder Woman on her first trip among humans.

Other theories are speculating about the ending of the movie, and what could possibly have pushed the once optimistic Diana to seek anonymity and avoid all conflict. The horror of World War I alone could be enough to discourage anyone, but fans suspect the battle could get personal for Diana: What if she lost her love interest, Steve? We certainly don't wish for such a heartbreaking ending, but that could very well explain her newfound bitterness.

Since the Wonder Woman comics are still running, the release of new panels while we wait for the movie to come out gives us plenty to discuss. Add to that the influence of Wonder Woman's 75-year comic book history, and there'll be many parallels to draw between the written version and the cinematic one.
In recent news, Greg Rucka, the writer of the current Wonder Woman comic, has addressed Wonder Woman's sexuality and taken a new stance on the matter. Instead of arguing for more gay representation in comic books, he confirms that Wonder Woman has indeed had relationships with other women but that in a world without men, defining her as gay is beside the point. He also expresses an overall feeling that no one should get worked up about this anymore:
"[DC] would, I think, like any business, prefer this not be an issue to anybody. But most of us human beings would also really rather this not be an issue for anybody anymore. It is what it is. This is how the Amazons live."
