Teen romances come in dime a dozen, but Asa Butterfield’s new movie aims to set itself apart. In The Space Between Us, the 19-year-old plays the role of the first human born in Mars. He forms an unlikely friendship with a girl who lives 33.9 million miles away from him. Below, the actor talks about how his new movie is different from anything currently in the market.

Life on Mars

The Space Between Us follows Asa Butterfield‘s (Hugo, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children) Gardner Elliot. He is a teenage boy whose mother, an astronaut, died while giving birth to him in during a manned mission on Mars. Online, he met and formed a friendship with Tulsa (Brit Robertson) who lives on Earth. Gardner realized what he is missing so he decides to go back home.

“This film has the elements of many different genres, it’s quite interesting in that way,” he told Sun Sentinel. “The movie has a science fiction backdrop for a lot of it yet it deals with very small and natural feelings and emotions. It’s about this boy who is just trying to figure out where he came from and what his purpose in life is.”

But, while the movie sounds so sci-fi and complicated, Butterfield’s priority is to make Gardner relatable and human. The young actor explained that he had more time to sit down and get to know the character. He teamed up with director Peter Chelsom to make Gardner “funny and interesting.”

The Space Between Us Synopsis and Release Date

However, things do not go well when scientists discovered that Gardner’s organs cannot withstand the atmosphere of the Earth. Determined to stay on the planet, he goes on the run with Tulsa. The Space Between Us will open in the US on Feb. 3.
