“The Maze Runner” starring Dylan O’Brien opens on Sept.19, 2014. Watch O’Brien as he showcases his acting prowess on his biggest starring role yet since his “Stiles Stilinski” breakout character in the hit supernatural TV series “Teen Wolf” from MTV.
Directed by Wes Ball, “The Maze Runner” is based on the post-apocalyptic sci-fi saga of the same name written by James Dashner.
In an article on Entertainment Weekly, it was reported that “Easy A” star Patricia Clarkson, who is a two-time Oscar nominated actress for HBO’s “Six Feet Under,” joins Dylan O’Brien in the movie as Chancellor Ava Paige.
According to Hypable, Dylan and Patricia will be joined by notable young actors and actresses including Thomas Brodie-Sangster (“Game of Thrones,” “Love Actually”), Kaya Scodelario (“Skins,” “Wuthering Heights”), Will Poulter (“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” “We’re the Millers”), Aml Ameen (“The Butler”), Ki Hong Lee (“The Nine Lives of Chloe King”) and Blake Cooper (“Parental Guidance”).
“The Maze Runner” Synopsis:
The story begins with Dylan who will portray the role of Thomas, the newest addition to a group of boys who are living temporarily in a walled place called Glades.
All of them came from the makeshift underground elevator they call “The Box” but they can’t remember how or why they got there. The only thing that they can remember is their name.
In order to avoid chaos and maintain orderliness, the entire community of adolescent boys are managed by several leaders called Keepers which include Newt (Sangster), Gally (Poulter), Minho (Lee) and Winston (Alexander Flores).
In the Glades, everyone is assigned to different sectors and they are required to follow rules especially the most important one, which is to never go to the Maze at night.
The Glades is actually place surrounded by thick walls which moves every night. Outside the walls is the mysterious Maze. Then, Thomas learns that the walls are only things that separate them from the monsters that live within the Maze called Grievers. These are grotesque, slimy creatures that are part-mechanical and are also armed with deadly needles and stingers.
Everything is starting to be okay despite being trapped until a girl named Teresa (Scodelario), the first female and the very last “shank” ever who will be deposited to their place a day after Thomas arrived. Unlike them, Teresa remembers a lot besides her name – that somehow she is connected with Thomas and to the Maze. She tells everyone that everything is going to change. It became the start of several revelations including the fact that the Maze is a part of an important test and they are required to solve it or else, there will be consequences.
Though it wasn’t his first time to take on a role in films, The “Teen Wolf” star has been part of “High Road” (2012) as Jimmy and the comedy “The Internship” starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in 2013 as a fellow geek-genius named Stuart Twombly who is an intern for Google.
His first starring role was in the coming-of-age film “The First Time” as Dave Hodgeman, where he was joined by her co-star and then, real-life girlfriend Britt Robertson (“The Secret Circle”) but it was in “The Maze Runner” that he was first given a starring role in a big-budget film, reports Deadline.
Everyone is still excited on what “The Maze Runner” has in store for them, especially after the success of “The Hunger Games,” and “Divergent.” According to Rotten Tomatoes, 99% or 1,797 of their users (as of this writing) wanted to see the said film.
After growing up with wizards and choosing between vampires and werewolves, it seems that we are past the fantasy hype and the limelight is now on dystopian-themed films.
According to Oxford Dictionary, dystopia comes from the Greek root words “dus” and “topos”, which translates to “bad place or region.” Oxford defined dystopia as “an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one.”
According to Time Magazine, it has been an on-going theme showcased in various books and films in the past such as “1984,” “Brave New World” and “2011: A Space Odyssey.”
But it was during the year of 2010 that dystopian films had caught the attention of the young adult audience with the movie adaptions of several best-seller Young Adult (YA) novels including Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games” trilogy (2012,2013), “Divergent” by Veronica Roth (2014) and the upcoming film “The Giver” written by Lois Lowry, which will be released on August 15, 2014.
It’s too early to tell whether the “The Maze Runner” would be a success or flop in the box office but there have been reports that the adaptation for the film script of the second novel from the James Dashner saga is already in the works.
Deadline reported that 20th Century Fox tapped T.S. Nowlin (“Agent 13,” “Our Name Is Adam”) to adapt the screenplay after acquiring the rights for “The Scorch Trials.”
On March 17, 2014, MTV released the first trailer for “The Maze Runner” during airing of an episode of Teen Wolf. Dylan also posted about it on his official Twitter account.
