An era is drawing to an end. For more than thirteen years, Peter Jackson has captivated both fans and nonfans of “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit,” which was written by J.R.R. Tolkien. However, this all ends with the latest and final installment of “The Hobbit” series, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.” It will open in theaters on December 17, 2014. When we last left Hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and the dwarves in “The Desolation of Smaug,” they attempted to and failed in trying to defeat the dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). In anger, the mighty Smaug makes his way towards Lake-town in order to unleash his fury upon the town that sheltered his enemies — the dwarves and Bilbo Baggins.
“The Battle of the Five Armies” will see the return of majority of the cast including: Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf the Grey), Luke Evans (Bard), Evangeline Lily (Tauriel), Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield) and Benedict Cumberbatch (the voice of Smaug). Some cast members who were part of the original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy will be seen in the movie as well, such as Ian Holm (older Bilbo Baggins), Hugo Weaving (Elrond) and Cate Blanchett (Galadriel).
According to the official synopsis of the film, the story will be much closer to the Battle of the Five Armies scene in the original book. Thorin Oakenshield, obsessed with his family’s treasures, risks everything in order to protect it, not paying attention to Bilbo’s attempts to make him see reason. This, in turn, forces Bilbo to make a difficult and important choice in order to gain peace between the dwarves and the people of Lake-town. However, dark forces approach as the allies of Sauron merge and wage the terrible Battle of the Five Armies, in which the balance of Middle Earth itself hangs in the balance. Amidst it all, Bilbo finds himself fighting for Middle Earth and those he cares about.
Based on a post from Peter Jackson’s Facebook account, he says that the official trailer of the movie will be released in October 2014, but he also warns the fans to keep their eyes and ears peeled for a very short teaser trailer that will be released soon. Adding to this excitement is the release on Indie Wire of a still from the movie itself, giving the viewers a first look at the movie. The still features Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) standing next to Bard (Luke Evans) as they pause and look what is going on around them. The still doesn’t give away much, but it seems that they are standing in the middle of a battleground.
Those who are attending San Diego Comic-Con 2014, however, will be in for a treat, as Director Peter Jackson will be on hand on July 26, 2014. There, fans and the media will be able to learn more about the details regarding the final movie in the “Lord of the Rings” saga.
However, for the rest of the world, all we can do right now is to wait and see what Peter Jackson has in store for us, come December 2014. In the meantime, it would be a good time to revisit the entire trilogy and the released “Hobbit” movies.
