Prince William and Kate Middleton have thus far enjoyed a very picture-perfect tour of India. They were were able to enjoy a game of cricket, they dined with Bollywood’s elite, and even celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday in the British High Commissioner’s official residence. However, their trip took a surprising turn while in Assam, when they were able to feel the aftershocks of an earthquake from Myanmar, that registered a 6.9 on the Richter scale.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were stationed at the Diphlu Lodge in Kaziranga National Park, around 500 miles away from Myanmar. According to Vanity Fair, the quake happened around 8:00 p.m. local time on the night before the royal couple was scheduled to make their way to Bhutan, on the next leg of their tour.

The news was first reported by Richard Palmer, a royal correspondent from London. E! News notes that Palmer made the announcement, writing that “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their party felt tremors from the Myanmar earthquake in Kaziranga National Park.” After which, a spokesperson directly from Kensington Palace confirmed that “Tremors were felt across the region and everyone is OK.”

Earlier that day, Prince William and Kate Middleton were able to enjoy themselves during a morning safari in the national park. Afterwards, the royal couple visited a local village, and were given the opportunity to personally bottle-feed a baby rhino and an elephant calf while they were in a wild animal sanctuary.

Because of the day’s activities, Middleton was asked why they opted not to bring Prince George on trip. “Because George is too naughty,” the mother of two replied. She explained that the 2-year-old royal would be “running all over the place,” but they will definitely take Prince George, and Princess Charlotte along during their next visit.
