Microsoft have announced that the Xbox One has sold over 5 million copies.

Following just a day after Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 had sold over 7 million copies, Microsoft revealed that their next gen console, which also launched in November last year, totalled 60 percent more than Xbox 360 at the same time, selling 311,000 units in the US during March.

Via the Xbox Blog, it was also announced that players are spending an average of 5 hours per day on Xbox One and totalled more than 1 billion hours of time spent in games and apps.

Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Marketing, Strategy and Business, Xbox, wrote: “We are grateful for your support on Xbox One and the continued popularity of Xbox 360. We’re going to continue working hard to earn your loyalty and making Xbox the best place to play games. “

Also, according to figures from NPD Group, the Xbox 360 sold 111,000 units in the US during March whilst the Xbox One saw software sales with an average of 2.9 games sold per console.
