The all-new 2018 Volvo XC60 compact crossover moves to the automaker’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) that underpins the full-size three-row XC90 crossover, the full-size S90 sedan, and V90 and V90 Cross Country wagons. Though it shares its platform with the larger XC90, the automaker wanted to give its volume model more distinct styling. Here is a look at some of the changes made to the new 2018 Volvo XC60.

Compared to the outgoing XC60, the new model features a more upright front end with a prominent grille flanked by Thor’s hammer LED headlights. The looks is similar to other recent Volvo models, but on the XC60 the headlights connect with the grille. The new model features three bold lower air intakes (in place of the previous single opening) with bright metallic trim below the central air intake and LED foglights below the outside air intakes.

Along the side, the SPA architecture allows for a longer wheelbase with shorter overhangs front and rear as well as a longer dash-to-axle ratio. The hood appears to be more raked than before and flows fluidly into the roof. Fender flares and side body lines appear more chiseled and defined. While the greenhouse keeps a similar shape, the rear shoulder line swoops up higher.

Around back, the LED taillights mounted high on the D-pillar return, but now carry over onto the tailgate. The rectangular exhaust tips also return, while the rear reflector design has been revised and the roof spoiler is larger and stretches farther back.

Inside, the cabin is more upscale and features a more high-tech look thanks to the automaker’s Sensus Connect infotainment system with 9.3-inch touchscreen. Although the new model uses wood trim more sparingly than before, consumers can opt for a textured natural driftwood. There is also more aluminum interior trim than before.

Last week, we looked at the styling of the all-new 2018 Range Rover Velar. The new SUV got lots of positive compliments for its styling.

ACURA23CL said: “Velar…hands down…no contest. It looks so much like a rolling concept that when I look at it, I can’t believe it actually a production car. It’s lines are so…satisfying… the competitors don’t hold a candle.” Michael Clark agreed, saying, “The RR looks the best of all of them.”

The NABG was slightly more critical: “I like all 4, but I give the nod on exterior styling to Jag.  I like the interior styling of the Velar slightly more.” As was Valentino Santana, who said, “Love the exterior of the Velar and F-Pace, but the interior of the Velar is much nicer!  The Macan is great too, especially when customized, but they’re a dime a dozen these days.  Not feeling the Q5 at all.”

Not all comments were positive: Greg Hennessey said, “I love Land Rover, but the competition is better here. The Porsche Macan is tops.”
