We got our best look yet at the Honda Civic Type R last month in Paris, and next month we’ll see its less extreme, but still sporty, cousin at the L.A. Auto Show. The Honda Civic Si will make its debut in the City of Angels on November 16.
Few details were given, but the L.A. Auto Show confirmed that the sporty Civic variant will feature turbocharging when it makes its world debut. That engine’s displacement is still unknown, but it’s been speculated that it could be a higher-output version of the turbo 1.5-liter available in the standard Civic or a detuned version of the Type R’s turbo 2.0-liter. The 1.5 makes as much as 180 hp in the Civic and 190 hp in the recently revealed 2017 Honda CR-V. Meanwhile, the 2.0 turbo in the current Civic Type R sold overseas makes 305 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The Civic Si could make between 220 and 230 hp, and should be offered with a six-speed manual transmission option.
A Civic Si coupe prototype we spied recently wore a different grille and front fascia than the standard coupe, and lacked the large rear wing of the Type R. The Si should be offered in hatchback and sedan body styles eventually as well. A couple weeks before the Si debuts, we’ll see the Civic Type R prototype make its North American debut at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
