The Most Powerful Royal Enfield Continental GT Australia Has To Offer

Up until last year, if one was looking to purchase a ready-to-ride cafe racer from a dealership, the options were really only a handful. There was the Triumph Thruxton/Thruxton R and the Moto Guzzi V7 Racer, which are both quite a bit on the larger side of the motorcycling food chain. That being said, those fancy themselves a cafe racer would have quite a few more option in that space this year as BMW brings its R NineT Racer, Ducati their Scrambler Cafe Racer while Triumph presents one more option with the Street Cup. But the more accessible option, even now, just like the Himalayan, Royal Enfield is the only international manufacturer that offers a cafe racer. Since last year, Australia has been one of the most important markets for Royal Enfield, so much so that the Royal Enfield Australia has experienced a 66% increase in year-on-year sales.

That being said, the Royal Enfield 535cc Continental GT doesn’t come with much performance that one would want along with the crouched and retro-racy stance of a cafe racer machine. With a kerb weight of 180kg and 29bhp, the Continental GT doesn’t do much when one needs an exhilarating riding experience from their cafe racer. Thankfully one Aussie man going by the name of Ric Steele along with his team at MotoMAX based in Perth has done something to resolve the thumping Continental 500 ‘s power shortcomings.

According to Returnofthecaferacers, Ric has been dealing with Royal Enfield Australia motorcycles in the northern parts of Perth while being simultaneously involved in modifying them. This gives him a good idea about how the engine functions and what can be done to it to produce better performance outputs. So to show off his bike building skills at the Royal Enfield 31 Day Custom Bike Build Off, Ric got hold of a stock Royal Enfield Continental GT and fitted it with a neat little turbocharger.

Ric’s boosted Royal Enfield Cafe Racer is tuned for performance while keeping reliability in mind. The engine still runs a 8.5:1 compression ratio while running 7psi of boost pressure right  from 3000rpm. As a result the now-christened “Royal Enfield Conti-GT Turbo” puts out a pretty decent 42bhp at the rear wheel, which is a incredible 40% increase in power output from its original 29bhp that it comes with. And while Ric put his efforts to increase the performance of the Royal Enfield 535 cc engine, he didn’t forget to give it a bit more charechter. The large parts bin at MotoMAX contributed with aftermarkets like the new clip-on handlebars and mirrors while Ric and his handy team created the flanges, exhaust piping and wrapping.

Overall, Ric’s Royal Enfield Cafe Racer is actually a full overhaul of the original motorcycle with some personal and sophisticated touches like the leather tank belt while boasting the sort of performance that a motorcycle with such a beautiful design deserves.
