2016 AMA TEAMS: THE SILENT SILLY SEASON

Eli Tomac in green.

Apart from Eli Tomac going to Kawasaki to replace the fired Davi Millsaps. Millsaps going to BTO KTM (for a Supercross-only deal) and Chad Reed waiting for budget issues to be resolved at Yamaha (in an on-again off-again deal) very little has happened this silly season. Justin Bogle made minor news by signing to stay at Geico Honda, but that wasn’t big news as he had been there for several years—it was just that he would ride a CRF450 (perhaps from under the Team Honda awning as Eli Tomac had done last year). As always some amateurs will get a shot at the real deal, but until they do something noteworthy those are just tryouts. Other than that—its mostly yawnsville. Here are a few tidbits of news, but by no means is this an all-inclusive list of teams and riders.

Arnaud Tonus’ lingering illness makes him a question mark for the start of the 2016 Supercross season.

PRO CIRCUIT LOOKS FOR BETTER LUCK

Even though the powerhouse Kawasaki team only one a single race in 2015, they really are one of the strongest teams on the circuit…and also the unluckiest in 2015. Adam Cianciarulo was a prove Supercross winner , but he suffered a sever shoulder injury early on and had to have surgery. Pro Circuit brought Swiss rider Arnaud Tonus over to the race and was impressive in his early outings, but then suffered a mysterious blood disorder (mixed with Epstein-Barr) and never got a chance to shine outdoors. Tyler Bowers suffered a back injury during the Supercross season and then got Epstein-Barr. Joey Savatgy won a race, but then go hurt later in the National season—leaving only Chris Alldredge in the truck. Pro Circuit will bring Monster Cup Amateur winner  Austin Forkner up for the 2016 outdoor Nationals (once he gets his “Road to Supercross” points in Arenacross). How many of Mitch’s guys will be healthy in 2016? That’s the big question. And, will he bring in any replacements?

Christian Craig was a fill-in rider at Geico Honda in 2015, but for 2016 he’s got a full-time job.

GEICO STANDS PAT

Geico will bring up an amateur rider for the Nationals, but have stayed with Christian Craig, Malcolm Stewart, R.J. Hampshire, Jordan Smith and Justin Bogle for 2016. Matt Biscelgia has left Geico, but has landed on a Suzuki RM-Z250 team.

RCH Suzuki left Broc Tickle dangling for most of last year’s silly season — this year he’s signed up.

RCH SUZUKI KEEPS ROCZEN AND TICKLE

Ken Roczen has a year to go on his RCH Suzuki deal and, regardless of rumors, he will live up to it. As for 2017, that’s anyone’s guess. Broc Tickle won’t have to wait for a last-minute reprieve this year. He’s signed already.

Blake Baggett will have a teammate at Suzuki this year.

YOSHIMURA SUZUKI

Back from his drug-related ban, James Stewart will join Blake Baggett at Yosh. Baggett was the sole member of the team last year as Stewart was forced to couch it.

Brett Metcalfe is going blue for 2016…in Canada.

BRETT METCALFE TO YAMAHA FOR CANADA

Brett Metcalfe has signed a deal to race for Rockstar OTSFF Yamaha in the 2016 Canadian 450 Nationals. Metcalfe is a former Canadian National Champion, but has had trouble repeating the feat because of injuries and DNFs. He is determined to regain the title. Brett will also race selected American events as well.

HAYDEN MELLROSS TO 51FIFTY YAMAHA FOR SUPERCROSS

51FIFTY Energy Drink has announceed that Australian Hayden Mellross will compete in the 2016 AMA West 250 Series on a Yamaha YZ250F. Hayden was injured prior to the 2015 AMA 250 East series, but did race the 250 Nationals. Mellross is coached by Tim Ferry. “I’m really excited to get this year underway” says Mellross. I’m confident that I can be inside the Top 10, and once I get a taste of racing up front, be inside the Top 5.”

Justin Hill didn’t get demoted from the KTM Factory team. It was more of a lateral arabesque to the newly upgraded Troy Lee Designs team.

STAYING THE ALMOST SAME

Joe Gibbs will keep on keepin’ on with Justin Barcia, Weston Peick and Phil Nicoletti. Troy Lee Designs will become the official KTM 250 team, as Roger only wants 450 riders Dean Wilson, Marvin Musquin and Ryan Dungey in his truck. Thus, Troy will get Justin Hill from Roger and have him join Jessy Nelson, Mitch Oldenburg and Shane McElrath (they will probably move an amateur up at some point in 2016). Star Yamaha has added Alex Martin to a roster that includes returning team members Jeremy Martin, Cooper Webb and Aaron Plessinger. Team Honda will again be Cole Seely and Trey Canard. Rockstar Husqvarna is Jason Anderson, Christophe Pourcel (for both Supercross and the 450 Nationals), Zach Osborne and ageless Martin Davalos. Jake Weimer will stay with Team Tedder for 2016. Wil Hahn retained the second spot at Team Kawasaki, where he will be joined by Eli Tomac.

2016 GRAND PRIX TEAMS: MUSICAL CHAIRS

Clement Desalle will go green in 2016.

There have been some big changes in Europe, most notably with Clement Desalle leaving Suzuki for Kawasaki and Glenn Coldenhoff also jumping from yellow to KTM orange, but the big GP players (Herlings, Cairoli, Febvre, Nagl, Paulin, Bobryshev, Van Horebeek, Gajser, Jonass) stayed put. The notable exceptions are Tyla Rattray and Ryan Villopoto, who both put a period on their racing careers. Plus, Dean Ferris, who will go home to Australia. That leaves the moves listed below (and a few yet to be announced).

Shaun Simpson isn’t changing colors for 2016, just teams.

SHAUN SIMPSON TO WILVO FORKRENT KTM

Two-time British National Champion and multiple 450 GP winner Shaun Simpson will get technical support from the KTM factory in 2016 while racing for the Wilvo Forkrent KTM team of Steve Turner. It is a two-year deal.

JENS GETTEMAN TO SILVER ARROWS KTM

Belgian rider Jens Getteman has signed with the Italian-based Silver Action KTM Team for the 2016 FIM 250 Grand Prix season. He will age out after this year and have to move to the 450 class in 2017. Getteman missed 6 races this season due to injury, but still made the top 20 in points—and had a 5th at Mantova.

Harri Kullas filled-in on the Husky for the second half of the 2015 season, but now has a KTM deal for 2016.

HARRI KULLAS TO SARHOLZ KTM

The German-based Sarholz KTM team has signed Harri Kullas and re-signed Dennis Ullrich for the 2016 season. Harri was a fill-in rider at Jacky Martens 250 Husqvarna team in 2015. As for Dennis Ullrich, he left Sarholz KTM after winning the German National Championship with them in 2014 and went to the Castrol Suzuki team. Dennis has re-signed with Sarholz for 2016. Both Ulrich and Kullas will race the MXGP rounds that are held on the continent as well as the German ADAC Championship.

Valentin Guillod is moving…somewhere, but wherever it will be, it will be on a Yamaha (and it isn’t America).

VALENTIN GUILLOD QUITS STANDING CONSTRUCT YAMAHA

After aging out of the 250 GP class at the end of the 2015 FIM season, Guillod had announced that he would stay with the Standing Construct Yamaha team and race a YZ450F in 2016. But, this week Valentin and Standing Construct announced that they would part ways — with Standing Construct team owner Tim Mathys saying that they had a disagreement over training schedules and training locations (which most likely means that Standing Construct wanted Valentin to train over the winter in Belgium). Valentin says that there is more to it than that. Valentin trains with Yves Demaria and Standing Construct wanted him to switch trainers. Valentin wanted to race some off-season European Supercrosses and Standing Construct said “no way.” In the end, Valentin decided to part from Standing Construct, but says that he is happy with Yamaha and will stay with them…and with Yves Demaria.

Tommy Searle is going green, again, in 2016.

TOMMY SEARLE TO DIXON KAWASAKI

Tommy Searle has been confirmed as the 450 GP rider for the British-based Monster Energy Kawasaki team run by Steve Dixon. It marks a return to a KX450F after one year at Red Bull KTM. Searle will contest the 450 GPs and British National championship. Searle’s KX450F looks like it will run Kayaba forks and shock (a change from the Dixon team’s usual Ohlins and from the WP units that Searle ran on his KX450F for the last two seasons).

Max Anstie is reportedly going from green to white for 2016.

MAX ANSTIE TO HUSQVARNA

With Tommy Searle coming to the Dixon Kawasaki team it is more fuel for the rumor that Max Anstie is going to Jacky Martens’ Husqvarna GP team. Thomas Covington will be joining Anstie at Husqvarna.

Big Ken is leaving the orange behind and going red for 2016.

KEN DE DYCKER TO SATELLITE HONDA  TEAM

Ken De Dycker is leaving KTM—where he had been Tony Cairoli’s hand-picked teammate for the last four years. Now 31 years old and coming off of two injury plagued years, in which he missed 15 races and the last 8 of the 2015 Grand Prix season, Ken has reached an agreement with Honda’s MXGP satellite team, 24MX Honda Racing, for 2016.

MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE: POV’S EARLY FOUNDATION

Before modern digital cameras the only way to get on track footage for TV was to convinc a rider, in this case A.J. Whiting, to wear a special helemt with a film camera on one side and a lead weight on the other.

USED IT, ABUSED IT, TESTED IT: AIROH AVIATOR 2.1 HELMET

The Italian-made Airoh Aviator 2.1 helmet is comfortable, ventilated and expensive, but its greatest attribute is that it is extremely light at 2.3 pounds.

VERDICT: The pointy-looking edge styling was divisive on the fashion front, and we had some issues with both the build quality of the Aviator 2.1 and the obtrusive rear winglet. We liked the adjustable-length visor, high-tech liner, spot-on sizing and great ventilation system. Our major complaint was that we broke or cracked parts of the helmet just cleaning it. This would be a good helmet at a lower price point. $569.00 — www.airoh.com or www.speedmob.com.

The latest reports have Valkenswaard moving to March 27-28, which puts the fly-away race in Mexico as a stand-alone event — which is not financially feasible for the teams. Plus, the GP of Argentina will have to get a new date because it was moved to make room for Valkenswaard. Expect some major changes to the 2016 GP calendar soon.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: RENTHAL’S NEW ULTRA-TACKY GRIPS

Renthal Ultra-Tacky Tapered.

Renthal Ultra-Tacky grips have been developed to increase traction between the glove and grip, increasing control and reducing rider fatigue. The unique Ultra-Tacky compound constantly produces and renews a sticky surface coating which when combined with Renthal’s Soft compound offers an incredibly grippy yet comfortable surface. Suitable for use in all conditions, the grip is particularly applicable where riders are looking for increased control of the handlebars.

Renthal Ultra-Tacky Dual.

The sticky surface will last for the lifetime of the grip and if it loses its stickiness at any point, simply wash with clean water and allow the grips to air dry to re-activate. They feature Dual-Compound construction with an Ultra-Tacky outer compound for increased traction, but similar in hardness to the Renthal Soft grip. The inner compound is firm to increase durability at grip ends. The sticky surface will last for the lifetime of the grip and can be refreshed at any point with water. VISITING THE PAST: 1993 PRO CIRCUIT CATALOG

Yep, that’s Jeremy McGrath on his Peak Honda on the cover of the 1993 Pro Circuit catalog. Believe it or not, that was 22 years ago.

NUTS & BOLTS OF THE WORLD VET CHAMPIONSHIP

Travis Preston (11) is looking for the three-peat in 2015.

The World Vet Championship celebrates its 31th year at Glen Helen Raceway on November 7-8, 2014. Dubya Wheels is the title sponsor, but there is a bigger story behind Dubya and the World Vet Championship. Tom White, who owned White Brothers back in the day, sponsored the first World Vet in 1984, and actually founded the event and sponsored it for the first 26 years. After selling the White Brothers, the new owners gave up the sponsorship, but Tom wanted to keep the race moving forward, so he had his daughter and son-in-law’s company, Dubya Wheels, become the title sponsor in 2014. And they are back for 2015. Here is the schedule of events for the most important Vet race in the world—start making plans now.

Saturday, October 31: REM will host its annual Octobercross race one week before the World Vet. Track designer Jody Weisel uses the Octobercross as a chance to test the World Vet layout, which will be different than the current track, USGP track or AMA National track — although the most famous features (Talladega, Mt. Saint Helen and the Velodrome) will all be retained. The Octobercross is a chance for riders to get a taste of the World Vet one week before the festivities narrow down to the two-days of racing. For more info go to www.remsatmx.com.

Thursday, November 5: Thursday will feature an open practice from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The 2015 Dubya World Vet Motocross Championship wants to give out-of-state and out-of-country riders as many chances as possible to adapt to the track — while riding with AMA National Pros and 16-year-old kids. It’s a wild day.

Doug Dubach.                                                                   Gary Jones.

Friday, November 6: Friday offers a special practice, limited to riders who have pre-entered the 2015 Dubya World Vet Championship. This practice runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On this day the vendors will be setting up shop and the Glen Helen/Troy Lee Museum will be opened in the afternoon for a historic motocross bike show from Tom White’s “Early Years of Motocross Museum.”

Saturday, November 7: Saturday brings racing to the World Vet Motocross event. The highlight of  Saturday is the Over-40 Pro Championship. But, there will be support classes for Novice, Intermediate and Expert racers in age groups 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 and Over-70. It should be noted that the only Official World Championship class on Saturday is for the Over-40 Pros (with a $2000 purse) — for everyone else it is a chance to work out the kinks before the big day on Sunday, November 8.

Pete DeGraaf & Pete Murray.                                      Rex Staten.

Sunday, November 8: Sunday is the official World Veteran Motocross Championships day. All the same classes that ran on Saturday will race again on Sunday—only this time it is for all the marbles. The exception is that the Over-40 Pro class (who named their Champion on Saturday). The big classes on Sunday are the Over-30 Pros (for $4000 purse) and the Over-30 Pro Women (for a $1000 purse). Travis Preston has won the Over-30 crown for the last two years and has already confirmed that he intends to defend it for a possible three-peat in 2015. The women’s class is a experiment that will be revaluated based on how many racers sign up.

Sunday at noon: The Edison Dye Motocross Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented for the 18th time. Initiated to honor individuals who have made a positive contribution to our sport, the award has been received by Edison Dye, Roger DeCoster, Jeff Ward, Joel Robert, Torsten Hallman, Bruce Brown and John DeSoto (among others). This year the 2015 Edison Dye Motocross Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Dave McCoy. Don’t know him? You should. Dave founded Mammoth Mountain and the dedicated dirt bike racer started the Mammoth Motocross racers five decades ago. Now 100 years old, Dave deserves to be honored for being bold enough to hold not just a motocross race, but one in the scenic mountain town of of Mammoth Lakes.

Over-65 class added: Just as with the 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55-year old classes, the rapidly growing Over-60 class will now be divided into 60-to-64 and 65-and-up. Of course there is still an Over-70 class, but no plans at the moment to add an Over-75 class.

Entries: Pre-entries, post-entries: Pre-entries are open until October 30. The cost is $40 for the first class and $30 for a second class. Post-entries will begin on Friday November 1, and are $50. The Over-30 Pro, Over-40 Pro and Over-30 Women’s Pro class entry fees are $50 (pre or post). Practices on both races days (Saturday and Sunday) will begin at 7:30 a.m .You can pre-enter at https://secure.tracksideonlineresults.com/glenhelen/index.asp?event=20

Ryan Hughes.                                                                  Alan Olson.

Age rules: It doesn’t matter if you will be 40 the next day, you cannot race in the 40 class until you are 40. The same goes for the Over-25 and on up classes. No exceptions. No cheating.

Class jumping: Riders can ride in their age appropriate class and are then eligible to move down one skill level for every ten years (for example, an Over-50 Expert can race the Over-40 Intermediate class). Old riders can ride in younger classes, but young riders cannot ride in older age groups. This system works like this: An Over-60 Expert can also race the Over-50 Intermediates and the Over-40 Novices—he could also ride the Over-30 Novices and Over-25 Novices.

Scoring: Scoring will be by transponder and you must bring your driver’s license to sign-up to prove that you are the right age before transponders will be handed out. No driver’s license—no race. There is no charge for the transponders, but you must leave a form of identification (driver’s license or credit card) to insure that you bring the transponder back at the end of the day. Pre-entered riders must check in along with post-entry riders post entries. For more info or to pre-enter go to www.glenhelen.com

Who can race? The 2015 World Vet Championship does not require membership, licenses or special paperwork. If you show up, you will be allowed to race. It is the original Vet race and titles have been won by many famous motocross racers — including Gary Jones, Rex Staten, Jeff Ward, Erik Kehoe, Warren Reid, Kent Howerton, Torlief Hanssen, Alan Olson, Rich Thorwaldson, Ron Turner, Feets Minert, Kyle Lewis, Casey Johnson, J.N. Roberts, Lars Larsson, Eyvind Boyesen, Pete Murray, Andy Jefferson, Zoli Berenyi, Ryan Hughes, Pete DeGraaf, Travis Preston and Doug Dubach.

Why is Saturday a warm-up race? Why is Saturday considered a warm-up race for the Dubya-sponsored World Vet? Because riders come from 20 different countries and almost every state in the union to race, and the extra day allows them to learn the track, the dirt and the massive Talladega start before the big day on Sunday. Many World Vet regulars race Saturday’s race at a reduced pace, then only ride one lap of practice on Sunday morning, so that they are raring to go for their Sunday class. The Saturday warm-up race lessens the advantage that Glen Helen locals have. It is no surprise that foreign and out-of-state riders need time to get used to the roughness, elevation and size of Glen Helen—it is a tough track that gets rougher with each lap and each day. Only the Over-40 Pros are racing for a World Vet crown on Saturday, November 7.

Zoli Berenyi, Sr.                                                                  Lars Larsson.

World Vet Championship titles: Any rider who wins his class on Sunday—regardless of the skill level can claim to be a World Vet Champion (with the caveat that they are the “Over-40 Novice Champion,” etc). However. The true World Vet Champions, the ones that will be recognized for posterity, are the Over-30 Pro, Over-40 Pro, Over-50 Experts, Over-60 Experts and Over-70 class.

Skill classes: The skill levels at the World Vet are Novice, Intermediate and Expert (plus the three Pro classes). There are no Beginner classes. After the Over-40 title is decided on Saturday, the Over-40 Pros can race on Sunday in the Over-40 Expert class, but with no purse. The Over-30 Pros can race on Saturday in the Over-30 Expert class, but with no purse. The Over-70 class is the only class with no skill divisions. It is possible for classes to be added (say if enough Over-40 women sign up), but there must be more than 5 riders.
