But if I had to name one other reason (besides the length - I’m a sucker for books close to or over 1,000 pages), it would be one of the same ones Nell named: Light vs. Dark. In mythology, in books and movies, I love that kind antagonistic vs. protagonistic storytelling. I love good vs. evil and even more so when it has that fantasy element to it, like The Stand does. It lends so much to the writing and opens so many doors, and great authors (like Mr. King) know how to take advantage of it.

But I think The Stand is not the best choice for a first time King reader. I always recommend people pick up one of his short story books (Skeleton Crew and Night Shift are my absolute favorite collections) so you can get a glimpse of his talent and his ideas in short spurts. Or one of his shorter stories. The Stand, like the Dark Tower series, is very, VERY heavy and can be kind of off putting if it’s your first King experience.
