Better make some more room on there…Hackettstown Medical Center is joining the family.
What’s next on Atlantic Health’s acquisition list? Columbia Presbyterian? Mass General?
At this rate, the parent company of Morristown Medical Center may have to start looking farther afield; pretty soon it may run out of merger candidates in Jersey.
Hackettstown Regional Medical Center has become the newest member of Atlantic’s ever-growing family, which now includes Overlook Medical Center, Newton Medical Center, Chilton Medical Center and the Goryeb Children’s Hospital.
Here are details, announced Wednesday by Atlantic Health:
ATLANTIC HEALTH SYSTEM, ADVENTIST HEALTHCARE ANNOUNCE HACKETTSTOWN REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP
MORRISTOWN, NJ JANUARY 29, 2014 – Atlantic Health System and Adventist HealthCare announced today that the boards of directors of both health care systems have agreed to transfer ownership of Hackettstown Regional Medical Center, a 111-bed acute care hospital, from Adventist HealthCare to Atlantic Health System.
“Adding Hackettstown Regional Medical Center to the Atlantic Health System family is a natural fit,” said Joseph A. Trunfio, President and CEO, Atlantic Health System. “The hospital has served its community and region for decades, and this affiliation will provide patients in the area with expanded access to high quality, specialized services and programs.”
The announcement of the transaction, which is subject to state regulatory review which could span several months, follows the completion of a merger between Atlantic Health System and Chilton Hospital on January 1, 2014.
“Our patients are familiar with the excellent caliber of care and extensive services offered by Atlantic Health System hospitals,” said Jason Coe, President, Hackettstown Regional Medical Center. “Joining the Atlantic Health System family will give the Hackettstown community access to more specialists and services throughout the system, from cardiovascular to neonatal, to oncology, neuroscience and more.”
Adventist HealthCare is a non-profit health organization based in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with five hospitals and numerous other health facilities and expanding services in the Washington, D.C., region, which it has served for more than 100 years. Hackettstown Regional Medical Center is the only Adventist HealthCare facility located in New Jersey.
While Hackettstown Regional Medical Center provides high quality health care services, operating as a community hospital post-health care reform is challenging. Hackettstown Regional Medical Center joining Atlantic Health System would provide clear benefits to the community and help, in coming years, to advance health care in New Jersey. Several benefits include:
Expanded outpatient and preventive medicine services available within the region
Broader patient access to pediatric and other specialty care; clinical trials; and advanced protocols for emergent care, including complex stroke care, the latest cardiac diagnostic and treatment interventions, and advanced neonatal care
Strengthening of the primary care network, making it easier for the hospitals to cope with increased demand for services that health care reform is expected to generate
Expanded evidence-based quality measurement and improvement
Improved quality and increased cost savings through shared services and more efficient use of resources.
Expanded access to a regional health information network
Atlantic Health System, one of the most recognized not-for-profit health care organizations in New Jersey, also owns and operates Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, Newton Medical Center, Chilton Medical Center and Goryeb Children’s Hospital. Under Atlantic Health System ownership, Hackettstown Regional Medical Center will remain a non-profit, acute care general hospital.
Atlantic Health System employs 13,400 people throughout northern and central New Jersey, and has 1,599 licensed beds, including those at the Atlantic Rehabilitation in Morristown. Atlantic Health System ranked 25th on FORTUNE Magazine’s 2014 list of “100 Best Companies to Work For,” the highest-ranked hospital system and company based in New Jersey on the list. Hackettstown Regional Medical Center has 111 licensed beds and treated 21,816 patients in its Emergency Department in 2012.
