There were two hard-fought losses Tuesday for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the 11th day of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

In soccer, the semifinal match between Brazil, including Bruna Soares, and Sweden ended without either team scoring. And it went to a shootout, which ended 3-4 for Sweden.

The Swedes will play the Germans for the gold medal and Brazil faces off with Canada for the bronze medal on Friday.

In basketball, the quarterfinal match between Australia, including University of Utah alumna Leilani Mitchell, and Serbia ended 71-73. They were tied at 20 at the end of the first quarter. At the end of the second quarter, Australia was up 37-35 and at the end of the third quarter, 52-51.

Competing Wednesday

Volleyball: The USA men’s team, including Brigham Young University alumnus Taylor Sander, plays Poland in the quarterfinals.

Water polo: The USA women’s team, including UCLA graduate and goalkeeper Sami Hill, faces the team from Hungary in the semifinal game.

On social media

Valerie Adams, of New Zealand, went to see other track and field events and tweeted photos from the event. She is the two-time Olympic gold medalist (2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London) in shot put and won silver in Rio.

USA beach volleyball player Casey Patterson shared a photo with the Olympic rings on Instagram and the quote: “Don’t ever let your memories be bigger than your dreams,” by Jim Craig.



Also, bronze medalist Sarah Robles had fun with a photo of her from her weightlifting event, including a mashup on an image of the 100-meter men's final.

She writes: "In case you missed it, I was a last-minute addition to the #usatf team. Bolt wasn't too happy about it. #superfastsarah"
