Doni fastened the pulley to the wire thingy and clipped me in. Bend your knees to a seated position Linda, good, bye bye… whoosh… off I went sliding across to the other side of the gorge. And so it was that Malcolm and I found ourselves on a Sunday afternoon hanging in the Magaliesberg mountain, zip-lining our way in a zig-zag fashion between the rocks and loving every single, heart pumping minute of it.

Our group was small, only 6 of us and we gelled really well as it was 3 couples. Doni and Frank from the Magaliesberg Canopy Tour company had briefed us fully, gotten us to sign the indemnity clause, strapped us up in the harness and given us all the instructions to make us feel comfortable. It was around 29 degrees Celsius so we were extremely grateful that we had applied loads of sunblock and had hydrated with water before we jumped on the bakkie to drive onto the farm where the tours were held.

There are 10 “sections” on the tour, the longest being 140m long. Each section has a name and a story behind it. Doni and Frank ensured we were kept informed and entertained at each platform after we landed. No way, not for me that would be too nerve wrecking I can hear you say. When we arrived and parked at the venue I saw a girl no older than 6 or 7 ‘suit up’ for her tour and that’s when I said, if she can do it then so can I!

At about the fifth section we rested and Frank provided us with water. Recycled water he added as they had just filled it up with tap water. Frank and Doni kept us in stitches with their dry humour and cheesy jokes (Doni told us his job keeps him suspended and he’s always hanging around).

At the end we hiked back up to the top of the gorge and the bakkie took us to the reception area of Crystal Waters Hotel where a light lunch and a non-alcoholic drink was served by Frank (which we had ordered before we left for our trip). We completed the feedback form and ordered our discs, one with photographic evidence of our bravery and another with video footage. We were also awarded our bravery certificate personally by Doni.

The food was lovely, everyone was in a jovial mood as we thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and we chatted away at the pool. The whole adventure including lunch had lasted roughly 3 hours. An afternoon well spent. We’ll be looking forward to doing the other canopy tours spread throughout South Africa.
