On a hill just outside of Salt Rock you will find this small, chilled market that is the foodie jewel of the North Coast. Children run around on the grass while adults browse the well run selection of stalls.

The Litchi Orchard currently holds two markets every month, a day market on the second Saturday of the month and a night market on the last Friday of the month. They have plenty of plans for expansion and we will be seeing a lot more of this market in the near future.

The day market consists of an organic or locally produced food section and a small crafts section. They always have a local musician performing on the permanent stage which adds a festive element to the day.

My top four selection of the day:

1. Love is pancakes: These two ladies have a real passion for pancakes and it shows. Try one of their new milk tart filling pancakes. Terrible for the waistline but you can always go for a run on the beach later. At R12 a pancake they are worth every cent.

2. Coltempo Salumeria: A proudly local and family run small business. They specialise in the traditional Italian methods of curing meat and they had a wide variety on offer at the market. I purchased a Felino Salami which is infused with garlic and red wine (yum). There are a variety of salami’s for taste before purchase. Check out their website to find out where they are selling this weekend.

3. Simply More: Angi Munford runs this delightful store that sells the most delicious olives I have ever tasted. The variety of stuffed, deliciously flavoured or pitted olives seems endless and although I tried I couldn’t taste all of them. My son is an olive addict and declared the olives stuffed with feta as the winners and the ones we had to buy. Angi also sells stuffed jalapenos, tapenade and marinated feta.

4. Thornwood: The lovely, friendly and always smiling Debra sells delicious homemade Macadamia nut oil. The oil is sweeter then olive oil and can be used for cooking, baking or drizzling over a salad. I bought a bottle on Saturday and my kids can’t get enough of it. I have started using it as a healthier replacement for butter on their sandwiches. If you are following Tim Noakes and going all banting like my husband then you will be pleased to know that Macadamia Nut Oil is 100% banting friendly.

I will be back at the market next month to try a few more stores and go back to a few favourites.
