How long have you been a blogger?
I think I started my first blog around 5 years ago, although it's pretty dim at this point! I started a blogspot blog when I was reviewing on amazon and thought it would be fun. I moved over to wordpress about a year later, and I've been on wordpress for around 4 years. I've only ever been a book blogger - although I have been known to post a political rant or two
At what point do you think you'll stop?
I've struggled with blogging more this year than ever before, actually. I haven't managed to post on my wordpress blog since, well, let me go check: February! I've considered shutting that blog down, but I've decided to just let it be for now. Booklikes is really the easiest way for me to keep on a blog, which is why my major bookish presence is over here!
What's the best thing?
The best thing for me is the conversation! I've been bookish my whole life, and have often wished that I had friends I could talk to when I really wanted to dig into a book. In my real life, people just think reading as much as I is weird. On booklikes, I've found my people!
What's the worst thing? What do you do to make it ok?
The worst thing for me is the pettiness of some of the people in the community. I absolutely do not want to be pestered although I understand how critical positive reviews are to aspiring authors looking to break out. I am fairly chill when it comes to author interaction - I've had authors get pissy with me and I pretty much just let it roll off. I find it annoying, because not everyone has the same ability to do that - I'm a 50 year old prosecutor with a skin so thick it's practically rhino hide. But I want everyone to feel comfortable and welcomed in the bookish community and authors being shitty to people doesn't advance that objective at all!
How long does it take you to create/find pictures to use?
It depends on the image! Sometimes it is super quick and sometimes I have to get onto pic monkey and make something cool.
Who is your book crush?
Remus Lupin. No, I am not even remotely joking.
What author would you like to have on your blog?
Oh, wow. What a question. Jane Austen, Madeleine L'Engle and J.R.R. Tolkien. Since they are all dead, that is a wish that will never be fulfilled.
What do you wear when you write your blog posts?
Clothes? Sometimes I draft in pajamas, sometimes I draft during my lunch hour while wearing a suit.
How long does it take you to prepare?
I write many different kinds of posts. Some are quick, shallow "hey, this book is great, you should totally read it" type posts. I write those in one go, start to finish, and they take maybe ten minutes. Others are longer and more introspective. I come up with a thesis or theme for the post and develop it from there. Those can take several hours to put together.
How do you feel about the book blogger community/culture?
I love the bookish community! Like I said above, you all are my people. This, to me, is the best thing that the internet ever did!
What do you think one should do to get a successful blog?
Post frequently and about thing that interest you. Don't worry about "being successful." Don't focus on getting free books. And make friends - comment on blogs written by people you like and they will talk back! After a while, you'll know them and they'll know you and you are part of the endless conversation about books that has been going on for pretty much all of history It used to be that you only got to participate in that conversation if you lived in an important place and were an important person. Now everyone gets to have their say, and it's awesome!
