It has been a long cold winter but here in North Carolina, signs of spring are beginning to sprout. The sun has come out, the temperatures are rising and I’ll be honest, the outdoors are calling. You see, this is our first Spring in our new home. And while the Fall and Winter here have been wonderful, I’ve been waiting with baited breath until Spring time. Why? Well, when we purchased this home, one of the major selling features was the fact that it is nestled on two beautiful acres of gorgeous land. And while that land has been pretty other times of the year, I’ve known that with a little yard prep, I’d be able to make it the most amazing entertaining area for Spring.
Now, I have to be honest and say I’ve never lived on land this large before. I’ve always thought in the past that small plots were best but as my children have gotten older, I’ve been dreaming of watching them run through the lush yard as gatherings and entertaining happen all around. It’s been my goal all along to create a home that is always filled with people and where everyone feels free to sit, relax, enjoy and celebrate. And while the winter has seen this dream become a reality for my indoor space, with Spring on it’s way I’ve been more than excited about transforming my outdoor area and making it the perfect place to entertain.
Since, well, I’ve never really had a yard like this before, I’ve had to do a little research on how to make it look amazing. Because while all the space is there, I’ve known since we moved in that a simple transformation and a little yard prep could take this area from good to jaw-dropping great. So, to prepare for my yard transformation, I headed to Walmart to pick up Scotts® Green MAX™ Lawn Food, a WIZZ™ Spreader as my essential yard prep supplies.
These awesome products are the perfect starting place to get my lawn entertaining ready! Since discovering that Scotts® Green MAX™ Lawn Food helps achieve a fresh and full green look for my lawn, it was the only choice to get my yard looking great! Plus, with the ability to cover up to 5,000 square feel with essential nutrients that help me achieve deeper greening in just three days, this 2-in-1 formula not only supplements my lawn with iron but also feed it! Major score, right? And when paired with the new, battery powered WIZZ™ Spreader to make spreading my lawn food quick and easy, it was the perfect starting point for my Spring yard prep. After picking up both the lawn food and the spreader to keep my large yard looking great all Spring, I headed home and put a few simple yard prep tips into action to ensure that I’m ready to entertain all season long.
While I’ll admit that this whole process is new to me, thankfully my hubby has a little experience and quickly shared with me the basic yard prep tips to ensure that our home is Spring Entertaining ready. And surprisingly enough, it’s easier that I thought! We simply had to follow a few basic steps.
Clear the Yard of Leaves and Limbs
Over the course of Fall and Winter our yard got a little cluttered with leaves, limbs and OK, I’ll admit it…toys. So the first step to getting our yard Spring Entertaining ready was to clear out any fallen limbs and leaves so that we had a clean slate to start our yard prep.
Get Your Grass Looking Lush and Green
With the leaves gone, it was easy to see that our lawn needed a little attention. So as soon as the weather started to warm up last week, I knew it was time to give our lawn a little TLC. Since I was ready with my Scotts® Green MAX™ Lawn Food and easy to use WIZZ™ Spreader, this step was actually super easy!
All I had to do was wait for a calm day (which with the winds we’ve been having in the mountains was a little bit of a challenge) and apply my lawn food to my wet OR dry grass! It was so nice knowing that the rain of the night before wouldn’t slow me down. To apply our lawn food, my hubby simply added the Scotts® Green MAX™ Lawn Food to the WIZZ™ Spreader! With the ability to hold 2,500 sq. ft. of Scotts® lawn care products, it was the perfect tool to make feeding out lawn quick and easy. In addition to the battery powered feature (which, can I just say my hubby loves!) the WIZZ™ Spreader also features Scotts® exclusive EdgeGuard® and HandyLock™ Technology!
Once we had added our lawn food to the spreader, our work was all but done! We simply let the WIZZ™ Spreader do it’s job and effortlessly spread lawn food all over our lawn, in the wide open spaces and in the smaller areas as well! With a quick refill, our one bag of Scotts® Green MAX™ Lawn Food allowed us to cover 5,000 square feet of area in our yard with lawn food and were just thrilled knowing that this step of our yard prep was so simple!
Where I had thought feeding our grass would be as much of a challenge as feeding the kids is sometimes, I was thrilled to learn that the process is so quick and easy and gives our grass all the good stuff it needs to get it looking awesome.
And the best part is, we can repeat the process every six to eight weeks to keep our lawn lush and ready for entertaining in the coming Spring and Summer months.
Refresh the Flower Beds with Bright Colors
Knowing that our grass was sure to look great thanks to the Scotts® Green MAX™ Lawn Food and WIZZ™ Spreader, we decided it was important to add some bright pops of color to bring out the beauty of the lush grass we were sure to have soon. And since early Spring is a perfect time for planting, I pulled out my little shovel and got to work adding touches of accent color to the flower beds.
I didn’t want to overdo things or detract from the overall picture of the lawn so I chose small but bright flowers and planted them along the perimeter of our flower beds in the front of the house.
By alternating colors and getting a little help from the family, we were able to plant our flowers in no time and I have to say, the small accents of color really make a huge difference!
Once our flowers were planted and our lawn was prepped, it was time to do a little clean up work and pay attention the the areas that compliment our lawn!
Clean Up Any Sidewalks or Paths
Once we had our grass fed with Scotts® Green MAX™ Lawn Food and our flowers beds planted perfectly with bright flowers, it was time to clean up the paths learning through our yard. We swept up any debris that had gotten on the paths during the previous steps of our yard prep and made sure that everything looked clean, giving our family and guests a clear path to our porches.
Decorate Outdoor Living Areas
Which brings me to my next tip. Our lawn is beautiful…but so are our porches and outdoor living areas. So it was important to make the most of those areas and get them looking as amazing as our lawn was sure to soon look. I started with our front porch that overlooks our lawn.
After cleaning up the leaves and clutter that had accumulated during the Winter months, I added Spring candles to my outdoor tables for a welcoming look that felt like an extension of our indoor living area while being the perfect place to sit and enjoy our lawn and the outdoors.
Then I added planters with bright flowers to the stairs and ferns to the hooks on our porch to achieve a welcoming look that not only was beautiful but perfectly complimented our lawn.
Next, I made sure I was making the most of non-grassed areas. Since a big part of our yard is wooded area, we have a fire pit and chairs located in a part of it where grass doesn’t grow.
By making sure it was ready and that we had plenty of wood ready for Spring evening fires, I made the most of all the space in our yard and ensured I have plenty of places for our guests to hang out when we entertain.
Cut Back any Existing Shrubs
Once our yard prep felt pretty much complete, we looked around for any pre-existing shrubs that needed a little shaping up and made sure everything was cut back so that it enhanced instead of detracted from the beautiful lawn.
My goal was to have everything look lush and natural and totally inviting and with just a few cuts here and there, I was assured that the walkway running through my front yard is ready and welcoming for all of my guests.
Sit Back and Enjoy Your Beautiful Yard
With an afternoon of yard prep under out belt, all that was left to do was enjoy the beautiful area that we had created and look forward to many Spring and Summer afternoons soaking up the sun in our beautiful backyard oasis.
I know in the coming months, my lawn will become even more beautiful thanks to the addition of Scotts® Green MAX™ Lawn Food in my Spring yard prep!
