My daughter, a reluctant reader, absolutely loves the author Raina Telgemeier. With their relatable stories and fun graphics, Raina’s novels engage my daughter in a way that other books don’t. So when we learned about Raina’s newest book, Ghosts, I knew we’d have to get it right away. Not surprisingly, the day it arrived, my daughter read it immediately, finishing it in one night.

If you aren’t familiar with Raina Telgemeier, she is the #1 New York Times bestselling, multiple Eisner Award-winning author of Smile, Drama, and Sisters. She’s also adapted and illustrated four graphic novel versions of the popular Baby-sitters Club series. Here’s the official synopsis of Ghosts:

Catrina and her family are moving to the coast of Northern California because her little sister, Maya, is sick. Cat isn’t happy about leaving her friends for Bahía de la Luna, but Maya has cystic fibrosis and will benefit from the cool, salty air that blows in from the sea. As the girls explore their new home, a neighbor lets them in on a secret: There are ghosts in Bahía de la Luna. Maya is determined to meet one, but Cat wants nothing to do with them. As the time of year when ghosts reunite with their loved ones approaches, Cat must figure out how to put aside her fears for her sister’s sake — and her own.

In honor of the book release, we have a fun DIY tutorial for a tie dye Halloween treat bag. My daughter made this with me, so it’s definitely a fun project to make with your kids.

DIY Tie-Dye Halloween Treat Bag

Here’s what you’ll need:

Orange Treat bag (heavier canvas doesn’t take the dye as well, so choose the lightest canvas that you can find)

Tie Dye Kit in black (includes gloves, elastics, dye, and squirt bottle)

Glow-in-the-Dark Puffy Fabric Paint

A piece of paper to practice painting

A large work surface (tablecloth, large plastic bag, etc)

If you are working with your kids, you’ll need to purchase separate plastic gloves for them (the kit only comes with one pair)

Wash the bag first before getting started. Prepare a surface that can get paint on it. I have a large box that I use for projects – it keeps the mess contained. If you don’t have a box, a large tablecloth is a good option, as long as it won’t rip.

Using the elastics in the tie dye kit, create your pattern. I let my daughter do this step. If you are using a heavier canvas bag, be sure that the elastics are on tight so they don’t slip off.

Prepare the dye according to the instructions. Put on the gloves.

Working in small sections, squirt the dye onto the bag. Since it can be a little difficult for the dye to adhere to canvas, you’ll need to rub it into the fabric.

When the bag is completely dyed, dry it according to the package instructions.

After it’s dry, you can apply the glow-in-the-dark patterns. Practice on a sheet of paper first.

Let one side dry, and then apply the pattern to the other side.

Enjoy your treat bag!
