Jen and Autie

Get creative with your old clothes and upcycle them into something trendy and fashionable! Jen shares how to decorate and refashion clothes.

Can you tell us a little about yourself, your family, and “iCandy Handmade”? What inspired you and Autie to start your site?

Hi! My name is Jen and I blog at “iCandy handmade” with my friend, Autie.

I am married to my best friend, and  I am blessed to be able to be the mother of two beautiful children, who I get to stay at home with.  I am also waiting to be chosen to adopt a third child.

Ever since high school, I have loved sewing and designing clothes.  I have a fabric addiction and am constantly thinking about designs and patterns.  I love that I can create beautiful one-of-a-kind articles of clothing for myself and for my daughter (and sometimes, my son).

Our blog, “iCandy handmade” is where Autie and I showcase our handmade designs and tutorials.  There is a little something for everyone, including clothing for women and children, parties, décor and more.

What are a few of your past successful refashion projects? Which project are you most proud of and why?

Here are a few of my favorite refashion projects on iCandy:

Maternity Jeans Conversion

Frayed Cutout Appliqued Girls Tee

Easy Pillowcase Nightgowns

My extender slip is one of our most popular refashion posts.  It is a simple, cheap, 20 minute project that can transform your wardrobe.

What are some of the pros and cons of refashioning clothes?

Refashioning clothes is so much fun.  You can take basic tees and create Anthropologie inspired designs, like this Mixed Up Tee.

You can take sale rack items and with a little creativity, make them look fabulous.  You can use old men’s tee shirts and create children’s tees and leggings.  It is a great way to be earth conscious, as you are basically recycling, and the price is definitely right.   I don’t believe that there is any cons in refashioning clothes.

Sometimes all it takes is a little lace or a trim to take clothing to the next level. What are some easy ways for moms to refashion clothing?

There is so much you can do, especially with children’s clothing.  You can cut off the tops of too-small children’s dresses and with a  little elastic, create cute skirts.

You can buy cheap tiered knit skirts and add rickrack or lace to make them unique and one of a kind.

Do your kids love when you refashion or decorate clothes for them?

Absolutely!  Lace, ruffles, bows, trim… they are every little girls favorite.

What are three pieces of advice you would give to a mom who wants to refashion some clothing?

Dive right in! The worst thing that could happen is you end up not liking it, so it’s no big loss!

When thrift/discount shopping, look at the fabric of the piece of clothing! If you like the fabric and there is enough of it, there is no end to the possibilities.

Pinterest!  I bet if you type in refashion, you can get some great ideas and tutorials.
