Level up your understanding of systems thinking and learn advanced techniques for creating change-making interventions.
This course will be live 4 December 2016

One of the big hurdles people experience when starting to think through systems, is that the complexity of absolutely everything being interconnected makes it hard to know when to stop- or intervene- and thus creates a mental wormhole of potential possibilities. But what if you simply apply a scope, constructing a boundary around the investigation area to help define the arena in which one is exploring? Inside the scope are all the elements, and outside of the scope are the other systems or elements that are identified but not included in the exploration. Suddenly, it’s as though you’re learning to swim in a pool, with solid visible walls, versus the ocean, with infinite possibilities and no defined edges. If you start in the swimming pool and the systems start to make sense, then eventually you upgrade to swimming in the ocean with ease.

While there is only metaphorical swimming happening in this class, you will get to explore where and how to intervene in a system to create change. This advanced systems thinking class teaches you tools to uncover practical approaches to applied systems thinking to affect positive change. In this class, you will learn to see critical relationships, understand feedback loops, and conduct consequence analysis. You will also establish causal relationships and gain radical insights into systems dynamics. Taking all of the new knowledge covered in the first series of classes, you will learn to apply them to project design, as a critical part of the Disruptive Design Method.

This class is best suited for professionals who want to enhance and deepen their understanding-and application- of systems thinking, in order to design positive outcomes in their work.

Note: For optimal understanding, we recommend taking the Systems Thinking class as a prerequisite.

Key Concepts: cognitive sciences and human experience; advanced mapping and analysis techniques; application of systems thinking to specific project approaches; systems intervention identification and design; theory of change implementation; systems dynamics and consequential analyses; working within chaos; opportunity analysis; testing and evolution of ideas; impact hypothesis

Leyla Acaroglu

Designer and social change agent Dr. Leyla Acaroglu is internationally recognized as a leading expert in the fields of disruptive design, sustainability, design, and education. As a designer, sociologist, educator, and sustainability provocateur, Leyla is widely known as a pioneer of using design as a catalyst for effecting positive social change. Her main stage TED Talk has over a million views, and she is an author and award-winning designer. Her current projects are all about disrupting the way we share and gain knowledge and challenging the status quo around what it means to be ‘sustainable’. She is the founder of The UnSchool, Disrupt Design and Eco Innovators. Leyla has a PhD in disruptive design for social and environmental change and is the developer of the Disruptive Design Method.

Class Curriculum

Start Part 1: Advanced Systems Thinking (9:03)
Start Part 2: Systems Modeling Tools (9:47)
Start Part 3: Developing a Theory of Change (8:11)
Start Part 4: Intervening in Systems (7:24)
Start Part 5: Tactics for Activating Systems Change (10:32)

Learning Outcomes:

» CRITICAL ANALYSIS: Develop advanced systems perspectives.

» REFLEXIVITY: Unpack mechanisms, models, and mechanics of making change, specifically developing a theory of change.

» SYSTEMS THINKING: Gain skills in deeper synthesis of all the components of the identifying, understanding, and mapping systems and problem arenas.

» CREATIVE INTERVENTIONS: Identify and build effective systems interventions, and design systems in which these interventions can exist.

The Disruptive Design Method

The Disruptive Design Method is a three-part process for activating social change. It is underpinned by our 12-unit Design Methodology of high-level concepts and content for professionals interested in activating positive social change through their work.

This is session 9 of 12 in the full knowledge set.
