This is a temporary 3 year, grant funded position.

The Organization

A leading American historian has called the Public Library of the City of Boston “one of the five great libraries of the world.”

Well over 3.5 million people visit the Boston Public Library every year to use its collection of 8.9 million books. Another 7 million people connect with the BPL through its website www.bpl.org to take advantage of its many services and its growing collection of electronic resources, downloadable media and digitalized rare books and manuscripts.

The Youth Services Department of the Central Library in Copley Square provides programming to over 2,000 children, teens, and caregivers each month. With the opening of a newly renovated Children’s Library and Teen Central in early 2015, the Library will be transforming youth services at the Central Library. The new spaces will include a dedicated program room for children, dedicated early literacy area, teen digital lab, and teen gaming room.

The Youth Services Department emphasizes programs and outreach that will reach Boston’s underserved, and diverse populations.

The BPL is a department of the City of Boston and a statutory charitable organization governed by a board of nine distinguished trustees appointed by the Mayor.

Position Overview

Promotes creative literacy to children and teens, by incorporating creativity concepts in all programming.  Conducts programs for youth of all ages.  Assists in the development of content and projects.   Assists in the conceptualization, development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative, educational programs for infants through teens incorporating technology, as appropriate, and supporting the concepts of creativity, and self-expression.

Scope of Responsibility

1. Assists the Youth Programs Librarian III in the development of innovative, educational programming for children and teens at the Central Library focused on creativity, literacy, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) competencies.

2. Assists in performing community analysis to determine public programming needs for children and teens, including identification of new and underserved populations, targeted outreach plans, and partnership opportunities with community groups, city agencies, non-profits, and other organizations.

3. Together with other Central youth services librarians, conducts a variety of programs for youth of all ages as developed by the Youth Programs Librarian III and other youth services librarians for the Central Library.

4. Works closely with the Youth Programs Librarian III, and youth services librarians at the Central Library in Copley Square to incorporate appropriate creative content into programming for children and teens.

5. Works with Central Library staff to create, expand and promote programs in support of learning and new models of information delivery and use.

6. Communicates effectively and professionally with internal and external partners, performers, and vendors.

7. Assists the Youth Programs Librarian III in researching and reporting to colleagues on major trends and issues surrounding youth services and programs.

8. Works on youth public service desks at the Central Library as assigned.

9. Performs other related and comparable duties as assigned.

8. Proficiency with MS Word, Publisher, Power Point, and Excel.

Qualifications

Education:  Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university and a master’s degree in library and information science. In exceptional circumstances, specialized education, training and/or experience may be substituted for part or all of the educational requirements.

Experience:  Knowledge of broad-based library, school, or museum programming practices, including current trends in youth services.  Knowledge of and experience with online communications and social networking tools.

Requirements

1. Some weekend and evening hours.

2. Ability to travel to BPL locations as well as to off-site locations.

3. Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.

4. Residency – Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.

5. CORI – Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.

Union/Salary Plan/Grade:  PSA/P-1

Hours per week:  35
