Primary Purpose of Position
The Digital Archivist leads the ongoing development and implementation of policies and procedures that facilitate the acquisition, transfer, preservation, arrangement, description, and access to born-digital materials (and analog materials converted to digital) in accordance with emerging standards and best practices; consults with and advises creators of born-digital content when necessary. Develops and documents born-digital workflows in order to support the preservation, access, and security of born-digital materials; recommends and utilizes born-digital processing tools and advises on preservation strategies and storage needs for digital materials. Coordinates workflows for the management and archiving of institutionally created email and media (i.e., web pages, images, moving image, and audio). Collaborates with Scholarly Communications Librarian, university community, and others to realize and implement discovery and access initiatives for born-digital materials. Collaborates with other Special Collections staff to process hybrid manuscript collections and create finding aids using current archival cataloging tools. Participates in the conception and development of grant applications in support of born-digital initiatives. Stays abreast of issues and tools related to the stewardship of born-digital materials; represents Russell Library in GCSU-wide and national, regional, and local committees and forums on matters relevant to archives management and born-digital collections management.
Working closely with department staff, the Digital Archivist supports acquisition of digital archives in all formats and provides knowledge and expertise in refining policies and procedures for digital records in Special Collections. The Digital Archivist participates in the creation of standards, policies, procedures, and tools for processing, discovery, and access to Special Collections content held in the Library’s Institutional Repository (The Knowledge Box).

Administration
Digital Materials Collection Development:
Holds curatorial responsibility for the digital collections of the University.
Develops and implements digital materials collection development policies and procedures.
Investigates digital forensics tools and develops policies and procedures for use during accessioning and processing of digital materials.
Researches, recommends, and implements policies, standards, and practices for digital records and collections.
Identifies new and existing campus publications in digital form and identifies strategies for acquisition, preservation and access.
Works with University Archivist and university community to develop and implement standards and best practices for archiving University web pages.
Leads ongoing development and implementation of standards, policies, procedures, and tools for processing, discovery, and access to Special Collections content held in the Library’s Institutional Repository (The Knowledge Box) and the department.
Develops grant applications in support of digital initiatives.
Represents Russell Library in university-wide and local, regional and national committees and forums on matters relevant to archives management and digital collections management.
Management
Acquisitions and Management of Digital Materials:
Evaluates and makes recommendations for development, refinement and implementation of procedures and workflows for digital record appraisal, accessioning, description, and management.
Collaborates, evaluates and makes recommendations regarding access tools, resources and work flows for born-digital materials and for new digital initiatives
Identifies, evaluates, and recommends tools and resources for new digital collection initiatives.
Acquires, arranges and describes born-digital collections and hybrid collections and creates finding aids using current archival cataloging tools.
Collaborates with Library staff to develop and implement discovery and access tools and workflows for born-digital materials.
Trains staff and student assistants to arrange and describe hybrid and born-digital collections.
Works with Library staff to develop policies and procedures for web archiving.
In collaboration with Special Collections staff, arranges visits to conduct on-site evaluation and review of digital records.
Serves as a technical resource for the creation and management of digital records.
Serves as a technical resource for management of digital/digitized materials intended for inclusion in the institutional repository and/or department
Aids with rights management for digital/digitized items intended for inclusion in Russell Library’s Institutional Repository (The Knowledge Box).
Collaboration
Collaborates with Scholarly Communications Librarian, university community, and others to realize and implement discovery and access initiatives for born-digital materials.
Collaborates with University Archivist to recommend and implement standards and best practices for digital records and collections of the University.
Collaborates with the University Archivist and other University staff to ensure proper transfer of digital records to the University Archives.
Collaborates with donors, other Library and University staff regarding best practices for description and management of digital materials and other digital objects.
Collaborates with department archivists/Office of Legal Affairs to develop policies and procedures for identification of and controlled access to collections containing sensitive or restricted materials.

Membership and participation in professional organizations, to include attending conferences, pursuing continuing education opportunities, serving on committees, and holding offices
Faculty – Scholarship and Creative Activity
Faculty are expected to conduct research and develop within the profession.
