We seek a full-time Reference Librarian to join our skilled library services and knowledge management team in the Washington Office. The Reference Librarian performs a wide range of duties in support of the Firm’s personnel and on-site library including research and reference assistance, collection development, technical services, and library maintenance. Successful reference librarians are responsive, communicative, efficient, resourceful, detail-oriented, tech savvy, and adept at interacting with a variety of personality types with diplomacy and finesse. In addition, effective reference librarians must have a mastery of print and non-print bibliographic resources and databases. Position: Exempt. Supervisors: Library Reference Services Manager and Director of U.S. Library Services/KM.
Summary of Core Duties and Responsibilities:
• Respond to legal, non-legal, and legislative research requests in a timely fashion, based upon the needs
and wishes of the requesting patron;
• Obtain print and non-print media from internal and external resources;
• Perform online searches using a wide range of external databases such as Hoovers, Lexis Advance, Lexis Securities Mosaic, Thomson, WestlawNext, etc.;
• Provide training to Firm personnel on cost-effective research using print and electronic resources in consultation with the Library Reference Services Manager;
• Consult with the Library Reference Services Manager and the Legislative Analyst regarding legislation of interest to the Firm and the Firm’s clients; monitor legislative developments in cooperation with the Library Reference Services Manager; collect and maintain legislative documents of interest; compile legislative histories of enacted legislation in which the Firm and its clients have an interest in consultation with the Library Manager and the U.S. Director; maintain in-house database of the legislative collection; consult with Library Reference Services Manager and Director of U.S. Library Services/KM with regard to the retention of various collection items;
• Assist with the supervision of the Library Assistant in the execution of duties related to Interlibrary Loans, including aiding in identifying materials and maintaining annual statistical records;
• Monitor relevant practice group news on a daily and weekly basis and distribute news content to appropriate practice groups;
• Construct wikis, pathfinders and research guides on legal, non-legal, and legislative topics;
• Assist the KM/Reference Librarian in training Firm personnel on how to effectively use KM applications and resources;
• Serve as back up for the KM/Reference Librarian’s daily monitoring work for various practice groups; and
• Assist with the general maintenance of the library.
Minimum Requirements:
• Master’s degree from an ALA accredited institution;
• Degree specialization in law librarianship preferred;
• Minimum two years’ experience in a law library setting desired;
• Demonstrated knowledge of print and non-print resources, databases, and the legislative process;
• Ability to master new technology with ease;
• Ability to work effectively in a team and independently;
• Ability to set priorities, identify problems and exercise sound judgment;
• Strong organization and written and oral communication skills; and
• Strong detail orientation, accuracy, flexibility and timeliness.
