We keep talking about living areas, bedrooms, patios and the much celebrated landmarks of today’s homes- kitchens. However, bathroom, just as much as or even more is an entity that needs all the possible emphasis. Poorly done modern bathroom designs will leave a foul smell (literally as well as figuratively).
Just like there are smart designing ideas aplenty, they are many blunders associated with bathroom design too. Let me share with you a few design mistakes you want to avoid.
Bathrooms should not resemble cocoons
I like referring to my bathroom as cocoon but this is a metaphor you know. I would not actually like my bathroom to resemble a cocoon and in being so cut off from the outside world. This thought brings me to the first designing mistake. Sometimes, we construct bathroom windows in a paltry way.
This can result in dampness, dullness and inadequate infusion of natural air and sunlight. Bathrooms should not only be in a position to fetch their adequate dose of air and sun but they should also give you access to the outer world via windows- and preferably a world with a good view.
Keep bathrooms a metre or two away from prime zones
Double check the floor plan with your designer. Try not to place your bathroom adjacent to any of the prime zones of a home. It might be a goof up, as you will surely find later to your great agony, to construct a bathroom right next to the kitchen or the living area.
Ideally, a small hallway or a corridor to separate the bathroom from other areas should be enough but don’t miss out on this much.
There is an urgent need to break the line of sight, both to maintain the aesthetic charm of the home and to avoid confusing the personality of each subarea of a home.
Camouflage toilets well
Don’t let the toilet invade the line of your sight the moment you enter the bathroom. It is not aesthetic to say but the least. Toilets will have to be there- no two ways but there is a way you can camouflage their presence.
Ideally, you should place the toilet and the shower on one side and the sink on the other. This arrangement will allow for the presence of two people at the same time, one in the shower and other at the sink.
A great bathroom design will always bring functionality into the centre of the picture. Even better when you can marry the functional or the utilitarian uniqueness of a home to its aesthetic poise.
Have you ever regretted a blunder you committed while designing or remodelling a bathroom?
