Here’s a look at 25 of the biggest showbiz stories of 2013:

1. Paul Walker and Cory Monteith Died Tragically and Far Too Young

Of all the celebrity deaths in 2013, none were as publicized as those of “Fast & Furious” actor Paul Walker and “Glee” star Cory Monteith. Walker died when a high-performance Porsche he was riding in crashed. The driver was a friend of his, and authorities say they were definitely speeding. To make matters worse, this happened right after a charity event Paul had organized.

Cory Monteith entered rehab in April, but his substance abuse problems continued until July, when he was found dead in a Toronto hotel room. It was determined that he died from a fatal mixture of alcohol and heroin.

Obviously, everyone at “Glee” was devastated, especially Lea Michele, who was his girlfriend both on- and off-screen. But they returned to work less than a month later and began filming a tribute episode in which Cory’s character Finn died. They never revealed the character’s cause of death.

2. Mindy McCready Committed Suicide in the Same Way Her Boyfriend Did Weeks Earlier

Mindy McCready shot herself on the front porch of her Arkansas home about a month after her boyfriend David Wilson died in the same way, on the same porch. There was speculation that she may have panicked because she was a suspect in Wilson’s death but the local sheriff denied that she was ever a suspect.

One thing we do know is that Wilson’s death put her in really dark place. She publicly admitted to “indulging in too much alcohol.”

Her life was in such chaos after he died that the Department of Human Family Services took her two sons and placed them into foster care. Plus, a judge ordered her committed to a treatment facility to deal with mental health and alcohol issues.

There was also a bizarre twist about Mindy hiring someone to help her make a video of a song called “I’ll See You Yesterday”. It was supposed to help people deal with a loved one’s suicide, but it also may have been her own suicide note.

She left behind two little boys: six-year-old Zander and nine-month-old Zayne. Their futures had to be worked out in the court system. Zander ended up in the custody of his dad Billy McKnight, the man who once savagely beat Mindy. And Zayne, the infant son she had with Wilson, is now in custody of Mindy’s relatives on her father’s side.

3. Manti Te’o Was Tricked Into Being in a Relationship with a Dude For Over a Year

Former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o shared the story about how he lost his girlfriend to leukemia throughout last year’s college football season. But as it turns out, this girl didn’t die, because she never existed. Instead, Manti spent over a year in a long-distance relationship with a pretend girl named Lennay Kekua, who was actually a guy named Ronaiah Tuiasosopo.

When the truth came out, Manti insisted he was the victim of a hoax, but not all of his explanations made sense. Eventually, he copped to lying about Lennay, but “only” for six weeks, when he started to realize something was up.

But by that point, “Lennay” had already been “dead” for a few months. While she was still “alive,” he reportedly exchanged more than 1,000 calls with her, totaling more than 500 hours in length, and never suspected anything.

A few weeks after the real story blew up, Ronaiah “came out” in an interview with Dr. Phil. He also admitted he had “romantic feelings” for Manti, and he referred to himself as a “recovering homosexual.” He also performed his “Lennay” voice.

For the record, Katie Couric did once ask Manti if he was gay, and he responded, “No, far from it. Faaaaarrrr from it.”

Manti is now playing for the San Diego Chargers. And Diane O’Meara, the woman whose pictures were stolen and used to represent Manti’s dead girlfriend, Lennay, has been in her own relationship for the past five years.

4. Jason Collins Came Out of the Closet, and Then Disappeared from the NBA’s Active Roster

NBA center Jason Collins came out of the closet in April to become the first active gay athlete in one of the four big North American sports leagues: The NBA, the NFL, the MLB and the NHL. He said, “I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.”

NBA players overwhelmingly supported Jason and his announcement. His coming-out seemed to surprise everyone, including his former fiancée. Jason dated a woman named Carolyn Moos for about eight years. They even got engaged. But in 2009, he called everything off. She said she had no idea that Jason was gay until a few days before the announcement when Jason gave her a heads-up that he was “coming out.”

Even though Jason was technically an “active” player, it still remains to be seen how teammates would’ve reacted to being in a locker room with him. Jason didn’t make his announcement until after the regular season ended. He was a free agent this summer, and has not joined a new team, at least not yet. And he may not, because he’s now 35 years old.

5. The Year in Coming Out

Photo by Mike Windle/Getty Images for TWC

Jodie Foster set the bar for coming out pretty high when she admitted she loves the ladies at the Golden Globes in January. It was shocking not because we hadn’t already known for years, but because it was starting to seem like she’d never come out publicly. (She’s now dating one of Ellen DeGeneres’ old girlfriends.)

Here’s who else came out in 2013 . . .

• Legendary Music Executive Clive Davis admitted that he’s bisexual, as did Michelle Rodriguez.

• Maria Bello announced she’s in a relationship with a woman.

• Former Cosby Kid Raven-Symone outed herself.

• WWE Superstar Darren Youn came out.

• Figure skating legend Brian Boitano came out of the closet just yesterday, December 19th.

6. Alec Baldwin Got a Show on MSNBC, Then Lost It Because of His Homophobia

Alec Baldwin was accused of hurling a racial slur at a black photographer in February. He denied it, and nothing really came of it. Then in June, a reporter accused his wife of Tweeting during James Gandolfini’s funeral. Naturally, Alec went off. He called the guy a “toxic little queen.”

Alec apologized but, at the same time, claimed he was not being homophobic. He said that to him a “queen” is someone who thinks they’re above everyone else, nothing more.

That was in June. In August, Alec physically restrained a guy who was taking pictures of his wife just days after she’d given birth. No racial or homophobic slurs were used but the year wasn’t over yet.

Just last month, he was screaming at some photographers who’d gotten too close to his wife and baby, and he called one of them a gay slur. Even though it was caught on video, Alec immediately denied he used that slur. He claimed that the actual word he said was “fathead.”

Alec then had three more run-ins with the paparazzi, but he kept his homophobia in check. MSNBC didn’t care. They canceled his low-rated and short-lived talk show anyway. Alec blamed the, “fundamentalist wing of gay advocacy.”

7. Paula Deen Admitted to Using the N-Word

Chef Paula Deen and her brother were being sued by an ex-employee for racial discrimination, sexual harassment and assault, and during a deposition, Paula actually admitted that she’d used the n-word in the past.

Once the deposition went public, the whole thing blew up in Paula’s face. She was fired by the Food Network, and posted two bizarre “apology” videos, in which she didn’t seem too terribly apologetic.

She lost several endorsements, including Wal-Mart, Novo Nordisk, Target, Home Depot, Caesars Entertainment, QVC, Smithfield Foods, Random House, Kmart, JC Penney and Sears.

She tried to make it all better by going on the “Today” show and fake-crying. People slammed her appearance for a variety of reasons, including the fact that she never once apologized during the interview.

The kicker here is that the woman who originally brought the lawsuit against Paula was white, so the judge ultimately tossed the racial discrimination claim, because you can’t sue someone for discriminating against other people. Paula ended up settling what was left of the lawsuit.

8. New England Patriots Tight End Aaron Hernandez Arrested for Murder

New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested in June and charged with the murder of a friend named Odin Lloyd. He pleaded not guilty, and he’s being held without bail. The day of the arrest, Hernandez was released by the Patriots, who’d signed him to a five-year, $40 million contract last year.

Hernandez could be convicted of murder thanks to a chewed piece of cotton candy bubblegum. The gum was found in a rental car next to a shell casing, and prosecutors think it places Hernandez at the scene of the crime. The victim’s body was found in an industrial park near Hernandez’s home. He’d been shot multiple times with a .45 caliber semi-automatic.

Hernandez was indicted in August but has maintained his innocence. This summer he wrote a letter to a fan from prison, saying he can’t wait to prove the “haters” wrong and get back to the NFL. He also said, “God put me in this situation for a reason.” He could get life in prison if he’s convicted. He’s also a suspect in a drive-by shooting last year that left two people dead.

9. Lance Armstrong Smugly Admitted He’s Been Doping This Whole Time

Photo by Jason Kempin/Getty Images for Nike

Lance Armstrong sat down for an interview with Oprah back in January, and right up front, he admitted that he used performance-enhancing drugs during all seven of his Tour de France wins. Lance was relatively straightforward in admitting he had no excuse but at the same time, he did play the “everybody else was doing it” card a few times.

For example, Lance said he didn’t believe he was cheating. He said, “I went and looked up the definition of cheat. And the definition is to gain an advantage on a rival or foe. I didn’t view it that way. I viewed it as a level playing field.”

He said he started taking drugs in the mid-’90s. But he claims he did it for the last time in 2005 ,meaning he was clean during his comeback, when he did the Tour de France in 2009 and 2010. He didn’t win either of those.

Lance is banned for life from professional cycling, but that doesn’t mean he can’t just get on his bike and ride. In June, he participated in something called the Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. Also, Lance topped the annual Most Disliked Athletes survey this year, alongside Manti Te’o, the football player with the fake dead girlfriend.

10. The Duck Dynasty Suspension

In a still-developing story, the cast of the highest-reality show in television became one of the most-talked about stories: A&E suspended Phil Robertson from filming “Duck Dynasty”, after he gave an interview to “GQ” magazine, where he called gay people sinners, and equated homosexuality with terrorism and bestiality.

A&E said, “We’re extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series ‘Duck Dynasty’.

“The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.” The show’s fourth season premieres on January 15th and he’ll probably appear in most of it, since, at this point, most of the season has already been filmed.

In the interview, Phil said his family believes “strongly” that “if the human race loved each other and they loved God, we would just be better off.”

But Phil had some not-so-loving things to say about the gay community.

He said, “Everything is blurred on what’s right and wrong. Sin becomes fine. Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there . . . bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman, and that woman and those men.”

Paraphrasing Corinthians, he added, quote, “Don’t be deceived . . . neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers . . . they won’t inherit the kingdom of God . . . don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

Despite all this, Phil claims he doesn’t judge. He says, “We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ‘em, give ‘em the good news about Jesus, whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ‘em out later.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he had this to say about growing up in Louisiana, before the Civil Rights movement:

“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. They’re singing and happy. I never heard one black person say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’ . . . Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly. They were happy. No one was singing the blues.”

The Robertson family from “Duck Dynasty” issued a statement saying they don’t want to keep doing the show without Phil.

They said, “Phil would never incite or encourage hate. We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right.

“We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm.

“We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of ‘Duck Dynasty’. Again, thank you for your continued support of our family.”

11. They Finally Locked Up Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes spent 2012 slowly but steadily becoming more unstable. And in 2013, they finally locked her up. She started the year doing the usual, like smoking pot, posting weird selfies and calling people “ugly” on Twitter, including Jay Z and the Obamas.

In May, she was arrested for throwing a bong out her apartment window after the doorman in her building called cops on her for smoking pot in the lobby. Amanda accused one of the arresting officers of slapping her privates, and said she was going to sue the police department. Nothing came of that, obviously.

After a few more months of weirdness, Amanda was arrested for bringing a gas can to a random woman’s driveway and starting a fire. She also managed to light her pants on fire and soak her dog in gasoline. She was placed under a 72-hour involuntary psychiatric hold, but that turned into an extended stay, during which her mother was named temporary conservator.

Unofficial reports say she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but that she was responding well to treatment. She was finally released to the custody of her parents earlier this month.

12. Lindsay Lohan Failed to Escape 2013 Scandal-Free

In March, Lindsay Lohan copped a plea for lying to police, and was ordered to spend 90 days in a lockdown rehab facility. That went pretty much without a hitch, and it appeared that 2013 was going to be scandal-free for her.

Yes, she was still hitting clubs, but there was no evidence she’d gone back to her substance-abusing ways, despite one inconclusive paparazzi photo in which it looked like she was reaching for a bottle of wine.

But on December 6th, she was mentioned as a possible instigator when Paris Hilton’s brother Barron got beat up at a Miami house party. Barron reportedly told police that Lindsay ordered another guy to whoop his ass. But the assailant, who threw the party in the first place, said Lindsay had nothing to do with it.

13. Reese Witherspoon Drunkenly Interfered with Her Husband’s DUI Arrest

Photo by City of Atlanta Department of Corrections via Getty Images

Reese Witherspoon and her husband Jim Toth were pulled over in Atlanta in April, and Reese provided some unintentional comic relief. Jim was driving, and when they gave him a breathalyzer, he blew a .139, which is significantly higher than the legal limit of .08. And no, that part isn’t funny.

But Reese ended up being arrested for disorderly conduct, because she got out of the car and lipped off to the cop. Dash-cam video of the arrest showed Reese drunkenly delivering such classic lines as:

“I’m a U.S. citizen. I am allowed to stand on American ground and ask any question I want to ask.”

“This is beyond. This is beyond. This is harassment. I have done nothing against the law.”

“I have to obey your orders?”

“I’m obstructing your justice? Really? I’m being anti-American? Wow . . . interesting.”

“Do you know my name? . . . You’re about to find out who I am.”

But the best part of the video is the very end, after Reese is safely tucked away in the backseat of the squad car. Jim tells the cop, “I’m sorry. I had nothing to do with that.” Another dash-cam video was released later.

When Reese finally addressed the situation, called her behavior “unacceptable” and admitted she was disrespectful to the officer. She also said she and Jim had gone to dinner and had “one too many glasses of wine.” She added, “I have no idea what I was saying that night . . . I said all kinds of crazy things.”

14. Jimmy Fallon Will Take Over for Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show”

Jay Leno confirmed speculation that he would be leaving “The Tonight Show” . . . again . . . and Jimmy Fallon will replace him. Apparently, Jay isn’t planning on re-taking the show after just a few months like he did with Conan O’Brien in 2010.

Jimmy takes over “The Tonight Show” in February, and Seth Myers is leaving “Saturday Night Live” to take Jimmy’s spot on “Late Night”. Conan refused to joke about it, but did wish him well: “I want to congratulate Jimmy. That is a really fun gig.”

Nut Leno will simply not go away, because in July, we heard NBC was trying to figure out a way to keep Jay around after he leaves. There’s no word on what may be on the table, but supposedly Jay has “a lot of ideas” of things he’d like to do.

15. Barbara Walters Announced Her Retirement

Barbara Walters officially announced her retirement on “The View” in May. She said, “I have been on television continually for over 50 years . . . but in the summer of 2014 . . . I plan to retire from appearing on television at all.”

It’s unclear what this means for “The View”, which has already gone through changes this year. Joy Behar left after 16 seasons, making Barbara the last remaining original host.

And Elisabeth Hasselbeck left abruptly in July, after scoring a new gig on Fox News. She had an emotional farewell and hasn’t been replaced yet, but Jenny McCarthy was brought in to take Joy’s seat in September.

16. The Year in TV and Movies

Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images

• Ben Affleck was chosen to play Batman in the “Man of Steel” sequel. Some people freaked out but others were cool with the idea, most notably Ben’s buddies Matt Damon and Kevin Smith. Israeli actress Gal Gadot was cast as Wonder Woman.

• Charlie Hunnam from “Sons of Anarchy” was cast to star in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie with Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith’s daughter Dakota Johnson. But he quit and was replaced by Jamie Dornan from “Once Upon a Time”.

• J.J. Abrams officially signed on to direct the seventh “Star Wars” movie. We don’t have any plot details yet.

• A “Veronica Mars” movie is happening . . . because fans donated $2 million to a Kickstarter campaign in just six hours.

• Sylvester Stallone announced on Twitter that Harrison Ford was replacing Bruce Willis in “The Expendables 3″, because Bruce is greedy and lazy. Sources say Bruce wanted $4 million, and they were only willing to pay him $3 million.

• “Argo” won Best Picture at the Oscars and the “Twilight” series got a seven-Razzie send-off.

• J.K. Rowling is writing a script for a new movie in the “Harry Potter” universe. It’ll be based on a Hogwarts textbook called “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, and set 70 years before Harry’s time.

• The ending of “Breaking Bad” was such a success that they’re doing a spin-off called “Better Call Saul”.

• “Two and a Half Men” replaced Angus T. Jones, the “half man,” with a bisexual character played by Amber Tamblyn.

• John Oliver did such a good job covering for Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show” for three months that he was hired away from Comedy Central to host his own show on HBO.

17. The Jonas Brothers Finally Broke Up

The Jonas Brothers abruptly canceled their tour in October. A rep said, “There is a deep rift within the band. There was a big disagreement over their music direction.” Three weeks later, the group confirmed they were done.

Kevin Jonas said, “It’s over for now.” Nick Jonas added, “It’s really hard to say ‘forever’ . . . [but] we’re closing a chapter, for sure.” And Joe Jonas said, “It was a unanimous decision.”

They later added that they’d grown apart creatively, and that they’d begun “butting heads.” They also said they’re not finishing their new album.

18. The Stone Temple Pilots Fired Their Singer and Hired Linkin Park’s Singer

Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland was fired . . . again. STP “terminated” Scott, claiming that he cost them money by sabotaging their tour, and that he’s using the band’s name and songs to promote his solo career.

Scott wasn’t happy, naturally . . . and he became even more incensed when they replaced him with Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. The band has sued Scott . . . and he’s countersued them.

19. Craig Morgan Jumped Off His Tour Bus to Administer CPR at an Accident

Country singer Craig Morgan was returning from a tour in June when he came across a freeway accident involving three tractor-trailers. He jumped off his tour bus and helped perform CPR on crash victims and extinguishing some small fires.

A local sheriff gave him props, saying, “Craig did exactly what he had been taught to do and was a huge help. It’s another example of the kind of guy he is.” If you didn’t know, Craig served in the Army for 10 years and was also an EMT when he was younger.

20. Jake Owen Got Into a Nasty Go Kart Accident and Lost Part of a Finger

Country singer Jake Owen joined NASCAR drivers Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer for a little Go Kart race in July and it didn’t end well. He crashed his car so badly that he ended up in the hospital wearing a neck brace.

He also crushed his hand so brutally that doctors had to suture some of the bones back together and insert screws.

The pain got pretty bad and by August doctors decided they had to remove the tip of his right ring finger. At the time he wasn’t sure he’d ever play guitar again, but the stub of his finger healed well enough that he’s already back to playing again.

21. The Year in Sexy and Unsexy

• “Teen Mom” star Farrah Abraham filmed a porn video. It was a professional job, with an actual porn star as her partner. She claimed she didn’t mean for it to go public but nobody believed her.

• Geraldo Rivera posted a nude selfie. He later blamed tequila.

• 78-year-old Barbara Eden wore her old “I Dream of Jeannie” costume at an AIDS benefit.

• Someone paid $1.9 million for a nude painting of Bea Arthur.

• Sydney Leathers, the sexting partner of disgraced politician Anthony Weiner, made her own porn.

22. The Year in Bodily Functions

• “Today” show weatherman Al Roker said he pooped his pants while trying to pass gas at the White House. It happened in 2002, right after he’d had gastric bypass surgery.

• Diddy admitted to Ellen DeGeneres that he didn’t fully get his swagger until he stopped wetting the bed.

• And on her MTV reality show, Kesha drank her own urine.

23. Justin Bieber 2013: Everything from Peeing in a Mop Bucket to Serenading His Grandma Naked

Justin Bieber spent a lot of time this year being an entitled little punk. His activities included:

• Peeing in a mop bucket in a restaurant kitchen

• Making his bodyguards carry him up the Great Wall of China

• Harassing a woman at the gym

• Freaking out on a photographer

• Spitting on a neighbor

• Pissing off Keyshawn Johnson

• Visiting the Anne Frank museum and making it all about himself

• “Adopting” a monkey, then ditching it when German customs officials wouldn’t let it pass

• Dumping bong water out the window of a party van

• And serenading his grandmother naked over Canadian Thanksgiving. (Okay, that one was actually kind of funny.)

But Justin made the biggest news this year for his antics during a tour south of the border. First, there were reports that he sampled the talents of a prostitute in Panama. Then he was spotted leaving an alleged brothel in Brazil.

Then a woman Justin picked up in Brazil filmed him sleeping, and the video went viral. The woman claimed she wasn’t a hooker, but we do know she’s done porn.

24. Kanye Kardashian Kaos . . . Including The Birth of North West and the “Bound 2″ Parody

Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West welcomed a daughter in June, and even though it seemed like a joke at the time, they named her North West. A few months after the birth, Kim posted a sexy selfie to show she had her pre-baby body back.

Kim had recently ended her divorce battle with Kris Humphries, and it wasn’t long before she and Kanye were engaged. Kanye rented out AT&T Park, where the San Francisco Giants play, to pop the question in front of Kim’s friends, family and an orchestra.

Despite what should have been the happiest time in his life, Kanye spent much of the year losing it. He got really antagonistic toward the paparazzi, culminating in a physical attack over the summer. Then he compared himself to a slave because Nike only let him design two shoes. And he flipped because Jimmy Kimmel dared to make fun of one of his ridiculous interviews.

If all this wasn’t enough, Kanye also released the video for “Bound 2″, featuring himself having sex with a naked Kim Kardashian on a motorcycle. James Franco and Seth Rogen did a shot-for-shot parody, and had 10 times the sexual chemistry.

And in other Kardashian news:

• Kendall Jenner turned 18, and almost immediately took some photos in a see-through shirt.

• Khloe Kardashian kicked Lamar Odom to the curb amid rumors he was addicted to crack and having multiple affairs. She filed for divorce this month, on Friday the 13th.

• And finally, Kris and Bruce Jenner separated and there are now unsubstantiated rumors that Bruce is a cross-dresser.

25. Miley Cyrus Twerked . . . And the World Changed Forever

Photo by Neilson Barnard/Getty Images for MTV

It’s really almost not an exaggeration to say that the world changed when Miley Cyrus twerked at the “MTV Video Music Awards” in August. Ok, maybe it is, but the event was probably the most socially impactful thing that happened all year, and it squeezed far more important and deserving stories off the front page.

The immediate reactions were pretty negative; even Robin Thicke’s mom didn’t get it. But Miley’s faithful servant, Billy Ray Cyrus, soon came to her defense, although he didn’t actually defend the performance.

Miley’s boyfriend Liam Hemsworth never commented, but sources said he wasn’t happy with her performance, or her new image. Their relationship didn’t survive the year and they officially broke up in mid-September.

Shortly after the “VMAs”, she performed it on a German TV show, complete with a fake backing band made up of little people, including a mini-twerker, whose butt Miley spanked.

And just when you thought there was nothing else she could do to surprise us, she released the video for “Wrecking Ball,” in which she rode a ball nude and made out with a sledgehammer. It inspired about a million memes and parodies like this one.

Miley sang the praises of pot and the club drug “molly” in a “Rolling Stone” interview. Then she lit up a joint onstage at the “MTV Europe Awards”. Although it wasn’t exactly ballsy move, since they were in Amsterdam.

As the year wound down, Miley bleached her eyebrows and lost 100-grand when her house was robbed the day before her 21st birthday. There were even some rumors that Liam Hemsworth wanted her back.
