The public is invited to embrace International Archaeology Day with a free lecture and exhibit viewing in the Heritage Room at the Mission Viejo Library.

Hosted by the Archaeological Institute of America – Orange County Society, the program is from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 18 at 100 Civic Center.

International Archaeology Day is a celebration of archaeology and the thrill of discovery. Every October archaeological organizations across the United States, Canada and abroad present archaeological programs and activities for people of all ages and interests. Whether it is a family-friendly archaeology fair, a guided tour of a local archaeological site, a simulated dig, a lecture or a classroom visit from an archaeologist, the interactive, hands-on International Archaeology Day programs provide the chance to indulge your inner Indiana Jones.

In Mission Viejo, guest speaker Andrew Vaughn, PhD, of the American School of Oriental Research will give a timely and informative presentation entitled “Update on Archaeology in Syria: Safeguarding our Heritage in Times of Conflict.”

Light refreshments will be served. The first 10 people to arrive will receive a free archaeology magazine.
