Beamish Museum, is an Open Air Museum located at Beamish, near the town of Stanley, County Durham, England. The museum dedicated to maintaining an example of daily life in urban and rural North East England at the climax of industrialisation in the early 20th century.

History

Beamish was the idea of Dr. Frank Atkinson, the Museum’s creator, and first manager. In the beginning 1950s and encouraged to make an open air museum for the North East. He noticed the significantly-transform area was losing its business heritage. Coal mining, shipbuilding and iron and steel production were disappearing, along with the communities that served them.

Frank make a mixture of the original and replica buildings, a huge collection of artifacts, working vehicles and equipment, as well as livestock and costumed interpreters in the area of 350 acres. In 1972 after the launched it’s existing site to guests and museum has received many awards. It is an important educational source and assists to protect some traditional north-country and rare livestock breeds.



Museum site

Guests can get around the site via various marked footpaths, including adjacent the entire tramway oval. The tramway square provides as both an exhibit and as a free means of transport around the site for guests, with stops at the entry ways (south), Home Farm (west), Pockerley (east) and the Town (north). Guests can use the museum’s buses as a free form of traveling between various parts of the museum. Although guests can also ride on the Town train and Pockerley Waggonway, these do not form part of the site’s transport system

March to October (Open daily, 10am to 5pm)

October to April (Open daily, 10am to 4pm)

Closed Mondays and Fridays from 2nd January to 17th February 2017.

Also Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day.
