IT IS AT this time of the year when ornamental plants, orchids and flowers bloom profusely in Davao City that floral competitions are best held.

Last August 12, 2016, SM City Davao launched its first Floral Fusion, where the participants did their arrangements with the fresh flowers, twigs, leaves and even ethnic pieces of jewelry.

Cesar Anaceto Jr. won the Centerpiece/Installation category while Paul Zabala bested in the Wearable category. Zabala also placed second for the Centerpiece category, followed by Faustino Pacardo. Anaceto placed third for the Wearable category while Rogie Vergara placed second.The Floral Fusion is a face-off of the region’s top florists. Ten florists participated in Friday’s event. Each florist initially submitted their concept paper to the screening committee. Contestants were given flowers that they had to incorporate in their creations along with their own paraphernalia.

Final works were judged according to criteria for judging that included 40% creativity, 20% color harmony and condition, 20% marketability, 10% balance and proportion and 10% quality and cleanliness of work.The esteemed judges were plant book author Jun Golamco, Ikebana International Davao Chapter Past President Neni Abaca, Davao City Tourism Operations Officer Generose Tecson and FIDI President Angel Puentespina.

Gracing the occasion was City Council Committee on Tourism Chair, Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, who congratulated SM for yet another ingenious way of showcasing the best of Davao, especially during the Kadayawan celebration. Also in attendance were key tourism personalities in the region—DOT XI regional director Robbie Alabado, DOT Mindanao Officer-in-charge Eden Larano David and Kadayawan Co-chair Art Boncato.
