The ALFA Dance Sport Team Davao, the official chapter affiliated under the Dance Sport Council of the Philippines Inc, (DSCPI), is conducting its First Davao Dancesport open Competition Event on September 24, Saturday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. at the SM City Davao, Annex Event Center, Ecoland, Davao City.
Together with the Davao City Sports Division Office, SM City Davao, and the Matina Town Square, the dancesport event will be participated in by different athletes aged from seven years old and above, together with the Amateur and the Seniors categories, from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The Dancesport Philippine Team is among those competing in the said event.
Dancesport, which aims to conduct physical training among its athletes in order to improve self–confidence and self-esteem among the dance athletes, is the newest sport included in the Batang Pinoy Program and the Philippine National Games of the Philippine Sports Commission and has been a member of the International Dance Sport Federation (IDSF), which is the governing body for amateur dance recognized by the International Olympic Committee.
With the organizer’s desire to boost and support their dance athletes to reach the goal to be world class athletes and win in the Asian and World Games and eventually in the Olympics, athletes do look forward to Competitions if only to mark the milestones in achieving their dreams. However, majority of these athletes, though with so much passion and bursting skills, come from underprivileged families and they mostly come from the grassroots, the barangays and they cannot support their dreams of being one of the best, due to lack of proper training, gears and funds. The ALFA Team, led by its able president, choreographer Lilli Arellano, saw this need and committed to serve and improve the dance sport community, hence this event was materialized.
This year’s 1st Davao Dancesport Open Competition aims not just to enhance the students’ interest, skills and talent and develop high performance sports so as to build team spirit and cooperation and encourage sports for all, likewise this is also a “dance for a cause” competition, where part of the proceeds will be dedicated to free dance sport workshops and future competitions fees to support the young Alfa aspiring athletes.
