Access to all AKO email ends on 31 March. At that time, users will not be able to log into their @us.army.mil accounts. Between 1 April and 30 June, messages sent to AKO email addresses will be forwarded to the corresponding DoD Enterprise Email (DEE) address. Starting 1 July, all email sent to an AKO address will be returned to sender as undeliverable.
AKO Email account-holders are encouraged to provide their correspondents with an alternate email address.

MEMORANDUM FOR SEE DISTRIBUTION
SUBJECT: Army Knowledge Online (AKO) Email System Shutdown Guidance
References:
Army Regulation 25-1, Army Information Technology, 25 June 2013.
Execute Order (EXORD) 058-11, LandWarNet – Global Network Enterprise Construct (GNEC) Implementation – Army Migration to DoD Enterprise Email Services, 22 December 2010.
AKO Capability Production Document, Version 1.1, 7 November 2014.
2. Purpose. To provide guidance to the Army on the final stand-down of AKO email systems.
3. Scope. This guidance applies to AKO email systems on the Non-secure Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNet) and the Secure Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet).
4. Background. EXORD 058-11 directed the migration of email services to DoD Enterprise Email (DEE) and the shutdown of all non-tactical legacy email systems.
5. Guidance:
a. Program Executive Office Enterprise Information Systems (PEO EIS) will shut down mailboxes on the NIPRNet and SIPRNet AKO email systems effective 31 March 2015. AKO will continue to forward email for Army Common Access Card (CAC) holders until 30 June 2015. Although AKO will retain the user@us.army.mil identifier in its directory for use by Single Sign-On applications, all email addressed to @us.army.mil accounts will be returned to the sender once forwarding has ended. PEO EIS will retain existing email records until the appropriate records management determination is made.
b. PEO EIS will ensure that all Army personnel and mission partners are notified that AKO will deactivate user access to all email mailboxes on 31 March 2015 but will continue to forward email to DEE and legacy accounts until 30 June 2015.
c. PEO EIS will inform Department of Defense and federal mission partners to immediately stop distributing their AKO email addresses.
d. All Army application owners should verify that applications that send emails or notifications to AKO email addresses are updated no later than 30 June 2015 to send emails and notifications to DEE email or other email addresses. Any application owner who is unable to meet this deadline must submit no later than 28 February 2015 a request for exception to the contact identified in paragraph 7. The request must include a justification and plan of action and milestones.
e. Army personnel with DEE accounts should immediately stop distributing their AKO email address and advise everyone to use their DEE email address.
f. Army personnel with an AKO certificate on their CAC, should update their CAC certificate following the directions in Annex A. This will update the DEE Global Address List with the email address on the CAC and automatically provision a DEE account for those users without one.
g. All other personnel should immediately establish an alternative personal email account and ensure that their contacts are aware of the change.
6. Operational Impact. This guidance will allow the Army to eliminate the legacy AKO email system without impacting the operational force. AKO emails are being forwarded to other official systems today. Before DEE implementation, AKO email was used by Soldiers while transitioning from one location to another, but DEE accounts now follow Soldiers throughout their careers and eliminate the need for AKO email.
7. The point of contact for the AKO transition is Mr. Marvin Wages: (703) 545-1330 (DSN 865) or marvin.d.wages.civ@mail.mil.
