SEATTLE--(satPRnews.com)--Attorney Advertising. Keller Rohrback L.L.P. is investigating recent reports that VIZIO’s Smart TVs may track and share user information with advertisers. This information includes the programs viewed, the date and time consumers watched them, and the Internet Protocol (IP) address.

Once this data has been shared, advertisers can use this knowledge to target other devices through your IP address. VIZIO changed its October 1, 2015, privacy policy regarding Smart Interactivity:

“Beginning October 31, 2015, VIZIO will use Viewing Data together with your IP address and other Non-Personal Information in order to inform third-party selection and delivery of targeted and re-targeted advertisements. These advertisements may be delivered to smartphones, tablets, PCs or other internet-connected devices that share an IP address or other identifier with your Smart TV.”

The Smart Interactivity feature is installed via automatic updates and may affect consumers who purchased VIZIO Smart TVs as early as 2009. In newer sets, VIZIO’s Smart Interactivity feature is turned on by default at purchase and will reactivate if the Smart TV is ever reset to factory settings.

Laws such as the Video Privacy Protection Act and cable subscriber protections limit how companies can share information about the viewing habits of their customers. According to ProPublica, VIZIO claims such laws do not apply to their business.
