WASHINGTON, June 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- U.S. News & World Report, publisher of Best Hospitals, today released the 2015-16 Best Children's Hospitals. The rankings help guide families of children with rare or life-threatening conditions to the best medical care available. They are the only comprehensive source of quality-related information on U.S. pediatric centers. Families can look up the new rankings and detailed information about each hospital for free at usnews.com.

The ninth annual rankings highlight the top centers in each of 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology & GI surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology. In the 2015-16 rankings, 83 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.

Twelve hospitals earned a place on the Honor Roll – a distinction awarded to pediatric centers that provide especially high-quality care in three or more specialties. Boston Children's Hospital, which was ranked No. 1 in 7 out of 10 specialties, claimed the No. 1 spot on the Honor Roll. Two hospitals, Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, made the Honor Roll for the first time.

"There is nothing more overwhelming for parents than finding care for a child with a rare or life-threatening condition," said Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor. "We hope the Best Children's Hospitals provides a good starting point for research and helps make a family's search for the best care for their child a little easier."

The rankings were based on clinical survey data from 184 pediatric centers and reputational survey information from pediatric specialists and subspecialists. RTI International, a North Carolina-based research and consulting firm that provides analysis for the adult Best Hospitals rankings as well, directed the surveys with the help of 115 medical directors, pediatric specialists and other experts, and analyzed the results.

The Best Children's Hospitals methodology factors in clinical outcomes, efficiency and coordination of the process of care delivery, compliance with "best practices" and steps to control infection and care-related resources such as adequate nursing staff and availability of programs tailored to particular illnesses and conditions. The rankings will be published in the U.S. News "Best Hospitals 2016" guidebook, available in August from the U.S. News Store. Visit http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/pediatric-rankings for the complete rankings.
