Newport Sea Base Rowing to Send 20 Athletes to South West Regional Youth Championships
Sea Base Rowing inaugural year will close on a high note.
Newport Beach, CA, April 28, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The Newport Sea Base Rowing program (www.seabaserowing.org) will send its very first team to the South West Regional Youth Championships in Sacramento, CA, May 1-3, 2015 to compete in the 2000 meter sprint regatta. The Junior Competitive Program comprised of 20 rowers, ranging from freshman to seniors in high schools throughout Orange County, will compete in 7 different events, and against 35 different programs within the South West region. The top three boats from each event will advance to the 2015 Youth National Championships in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida, June 12-14, 2015.
NSB Rowing, established less than one year ago, operates under Thomas Hartman, Executive Director of Newport Sea Base, a Boy Scouts of America facility. The Sea Base provides programs for junior high, high school, and adults and continues to grow in both numbers and in competitive fortitude. The Junior Competitive Program has competed in many regattas this past year with multiple boats in the grand finals and many medals to show for it. Recently, the lightweight boat scrimmaged the Marina Aquatic Center, who has one of the top lightweight boats in the region, and finished with one win and one loss. The scrimmage results prove that they have what it takes to do extremely well this weekend at the Championships.
“Being a new program, and what some would say the underdogs in Orange County, we are definitely holding our own. We have come up against a lot of hurdles including starting our program later into the season, having a very small team, and misinformation about our program being delivered to kids throughout our community. With all that being said, we are very proud of what our athletes have accomplished this season; practice three hours a day, six days a week and we have medals to show for it,” says Head Coach James Long-Lerno.
Training in the beautiful Newport Beach Harbor, the athletes head into the state championships ready to give their all, and at the very least, broaden their experience and strengthen their connection as a team. With multiple programs beginning this summer for both inexperienced and advanced rowers, NSB Rowing will continue to improve its athletes and expand its programs.
