Emcura Immediate Care, a pediatrics practice in Bloomfield, Michigan, is touting its success with new technology.

The facility has begun using digital otoscopes produced by Firefly Global to boost patient care.

The video otoscopes, which have been recognized by Contemporary Pediatrics as one of its “Best New Tech Products,” enable doctors to examine a patient’s ear canal in microscopic detail while streaming video images onto a nearby computer screen. In addition to aiding diagnosis, the images help patients or parents understand pediatric ear conditions and follow progress during treatment.

Dr. Manish Kesliker, from Emcura, notes that Firefly’s digital video otoscopes fit perfectly into his office’s mission to use minimal-risk technology to provide evidence-based practices and an enhanced patient experience.

“During an examination with the digital otoscope,” a provided statement reads, “the patient can see exactly what the doctor is viewing thanks to the live video feed. The doctor can then explain what is visible in the ear canal and on the eardrum, or tympanic membrane. The video otoscope’s snapshot feature provides the option for patients to take pictures of the inner ear home. Emcura incorporates the images into their electronic medical records for reference at future visits.”

“We use the Firefly digital otoscopes often, especially when there is pathology,” says Dr. Kesliker. “The technology allows us to show the patient or parents exactly what is happening in the ear. They love being able to see and better understand their condition, and they also like the option to take a snapshot home. It increases their confidence in our diagnosis and treatment.”

Firefly’s DE500 Digital Video Otoscope connects to a Windows notebook computer’s USB port.
