A website update has made little difference, if you’re joining us in Barcelona you’ll find the GSMA’s annual Mobile World Congress is once again next to useless for any delegates wanting to track down mHealth innovations and follow the mHealth conference content:

For a background on mHealth developments at Mobile World Congress check out my guides from 2014, 2013, 2012 and our mHealth Insight reviews from 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014).

Despite the very small attendance at last years two day “Health & Wellness” meeting stream the European Connected Health Alliance (formerly the EU mHealth Alliance) will once again be hosting this side show of mHealth seminars. Last year these were held in Montjuic – a location that was 30 minutes away from the main Mobile World Congress event – and this year things are even more confusing as the 2 day meeting is set to be held across two different locations (Tues 3 March at the Mobile World Centre which is at Career de Fontanella, 2, 08002 and Wed 4 March in Hall 8.0 of the Fira Gran Via).

With 70,000 delegates attending the traffic in Barcelona is horrendous so you’re probably going to be looking at each way trip times similar to those last year of at least 30 mins which is a real pain.

Perhaps it’s the date clash with the mHealth Summit being held during HIMSS’s UK eHealth Week in London but I think it’s more likely the shift in focus away from mobile operators (the GSMA is a MNO member organisation) who we increasingly look to as mere pipes to satisfy our boundless appetite for mobile data towards Smartphone brands (like Apple & Samsung) and app stores (Apple & Google) that explains the lack of takers for the expensive sponsorship packages (eg. the two €50,000+VAT Platinum sponsor opportunities are priced similarly to packages available for the mHealth Summit that draws in 4,000+ delegates including the CEO’s and key decision makers at all the key mobile giants like Apple, QComm, MNOs and Samsung).

Sponsorship sales are positive too as even without Samsung’s revisit (click here to watch the mHealth keynote from Samsung Mobile President & CSO Young Sohn last year) and an expected audience of as little as 50 paying delegates (like we saw in 2014) the organisers have managed to get the debt laden Telefónica & VVT to take up €23k (+VAT) Gold Sponsorship packages, the Active and Assistive Living (AAL) programme, Globo and Inspire have taken €9k Silver Sponsorships leaving Roche (their Emminens Healthcare Services company) and Marand with the smaller Bronze ‘Tailored Sponsorship’ Packages.

The following guide includes a comprehensive diary of the mHealth presentations followed by a hall by hall guide to exhibitors who you can find showcasing mHealth apps, devices and services and a networking event listing. If you know of anything that I’ve missed please add it in the comments below and I’ll update the post. I hope you find it a helpful guide and that we get a chance to meet on my fleeting visit to Barcelona!

Wearable technology looks poised to play a key role in the future of this market. Yet concerns relating to reimbursement models, the regulatory environment, standards and data security need to be allayed if mobile health is to fulfil its potential. Meanwhile, for the Education sector, mobile offers an invaluable opportunity to promote effective new ways of teaching and learning, enabling access to up to date course materials anytime, anywhere.
