Semi-Permanent once again draws creative junkies for the annual worship of smart international design. This year’s lineup includes the graphic designers behind Carine Roitfeld’s sexed-up French Vogue, photojournalist Ashley Gilbertson, Abbot Miller of the world’s largest independent design consultancy Pentagram, filmmaker Niki Caro, urban design wunderkind Nat Cheshire and events maestro Mike Mizrahi. “Comedy is the art of making people laugh without making them puke.” – Steve Martin. Comedians from here and around the world walk the line in the uproarious NZ International Comedy Festival. The funny bone is a tricky one to detect – which is why you’ll want to check out our brave reviewer Greg Bruce’s insights here. Lanky Londoner James Acaster (right) has the goods. On a more sombre note, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra reflects on the 100th anniversary of World War I with a moving programme of music influenced by war. The protective power of objects is at the heart of The Talisman Project at Objectspace. Furniture designer Roger Kelly and jeweller Mia Straka have collaborated to create works using basketry, skeletons, traps and tunnels.
