The Swiss star, who won the tournament in 2015, was set to be the top seed at the event but Rotterdam’s tournament director Richard Krajicek revealed a knee injury that the 31-year-old sustained at the Australian Open had forced him to change his plans.
In Wawrinka’s absence, Rafael Nadal will now be the top seeded star at the event and the heavy favourite to lift the title.
