20 Clutch - Earthrocker

Rock is not dead! Not yet at least, and Clutch is the band that proves the stated fact. Their energy and explosiveness was always considered as the ace in their sleeves. Their latest record, Earth Rocker, delivered some good old-school stoner rock anthems. Performing heavily and tirelessly, Earth Rocker became an album to get stack upon pretty soon. ‘Earth Rocker’, ‘Crucial Velocity’ and every moment upon will force you to become one with a race car, totally accelerating towards the speed of light! Clutch’s Earth Rocker earn a position in the year’s best of lists because it was worth it and because the record offered us a numerous of moments to get crazy back in 2013. - Kostas Tsotsanis

19 Enshadowed – Magic Chaos Psychedelia

In 1998, the Greek black metal band Enshadowed came to life. In 2013, and after ten years since their last full-length, they returned to the forefront with their third album, with the name “Magic Chaos Psychedelia”. Deftly mixing the diabolic melody of Belphegor, the brutal drums of Marduk and the sharp guitars of Dark Funeral, Enshadowed created a solid album, full of hateful music, which even does border with psychedelic at certain points. Comfortably short tracks with complex enough compositions, crazy riffing, imposing bass lines, perfectly harmonized keys, they all contribute in offering the listener a relentless trip that will ravage his senses. One of the best black metal releases of 2013 and it seriously demands your attention! - Stella Papaspyropoulou

18 Blood Ceremony – The Eldritch Dark

How I regret not rating this album higher than 9 out of 10. That ability of creating the same feeling of “Oh my god, I am listening to something legendary right now” as the legends of our music is a sector that only one or two other bands can compare with Blood Ceremony. “The Eldritch dark” is an endless walk in an enchanted forest, a pagan mass to celebrate light and darkness both, it’s Black Sabbath with Jethro Tull and Coven sitting around a bonfire in a grove on a starry night and jamming together. Alia O’ Brien is a delightful, enchanting and tempting she-demon that uses her voice and flute to lure you inside a whirlwind of colors, sounds, feelings and images from which you may never escape. I know I still haven’t (since their debut to be precise). Let this tribute be a pulpit of recognition for the band that wrote the best song of 2013, “Lord Summerisle”.  - Achilles Pantogyios

17 Thou Art Lord – The Regal Pulse Of Lucifer

Well, well, well…This is the return of the legendary Thou Art Lord. One hell of a comeback if you ask the writer. An amazing mixture of their Hellenic black metal sound with the amazing Death/Black grunts of Gothmog (check out Soulskinner!) and an early Morbid Angel influence to spawn some of their best songs to date. Songs like “Nine Steps To Hell”, “Artificial Malevolence”, the title track and “Πολιτεία Δαιμόνων” declare that this supergroup deserves that label 100%. It’s an company of well-known old-school extreme musicians of the Greek scene willing to kick asses and do what they love the most. Doing so since 1993 and never showing the will to change not even a thing in that, shows nonetheless dedication and unconditional love for the genre. We can only wish to dream scarlet witching dreams again now that Magus Wampyr Daoloth got fired up once more! All Hail Thou Art Lord! - John Savvidis

16 Fleshgod Apocalypse – Labyrinth

Itallian Symphonic/Death metallers came back with the release of their third album “Labyrinth”. The band, right from the first album, established a technical death metal with symphonic sound and brutal/clean vocals. Obviously the same pattern remains in “Labyrinth” but seems to be more focused structurally and presents a less chaotic sound than in the previous albums. The lyrics are a concept idea based on the Mythological existence of Labyrinth in Knossos (in Crete). I have to admit that I was really excited with the album production since all this cataclysmic and chaotic sound was brought in magnificently. All in all, “Labyrinth” is not an easy listening album (as none Fleshgod Apocalypse album is) but is there any band which combines so many musical elements and that is be easy listening? I thought of the previous albums and I’m pretty sure of this; FLeshgod Apocalypse, using this unique sound, in the next few years can be among the greatest in the heavy music industry. - Manos Spanos

15 Fates Warning – Darkness In A Different Light

After almost 10 years of absence, Fates Warning return with an album that could be described as one of the most anticipated releases for 2013 at least. This is kind of a new start that shows where the prog legends are heading music-wise. Surely not their best album and should not be compared with past albums but its music is really beautiful. With memorable songs that stuck in your head, it has only a few points that you will find a little boring and maybe repetitive. It has great compositions, melodies that sooth and meaningful lyrics. The performances are remarkable in general, so the only one I should point out is the talented and totally professional Ron Jarzombek, which put his heart and soul in his first record with Fates Warning replacing Mark Zonder’s place with ease.  I really hope “Darkness In A Different Light” is the beginning of many great albums to come. If this is true I think we’ll continue listening to many great songs from this amazing band. - Steve Drax

14 Hacride – Back To Where You’ve Never Been

The Frenchmen from Poitiers did a little miracle with their fourth album, if we count also the fact that they have new members and this sometimes can be fatal for a band’s inner strength. They didn’t seem to hesitate in making their sound heavier and the new vocalist gave them an extra push in this release, making ‘’Back To Where You’ve Never Been’’ a superb album, which shows the ongoing rise of the French technical bands and the bright future that lies ahead for the quartet. Hacride’s fourth album not only stands proudly as equal next to the previous three albums, but it may prove to be their new fans’ favourite album. A must have for those who like Gojira, Meshuggah and other heavy technical stuff from the European continent. - Aggelos “Redneck” Katsouras

13 Ghost – Infestissumam

To tell you the truth I was a bit preoccupied with this one. When Ghost released their debut “Opus Eponymous” in 2010, even though I enjoyed it, I never understood the hype around their name. It just didn’t do it that much for me. Thankfully Ghost proved me wrong. The Nameless Ghouls and Papa Emeritus II continue what they started doing in 2010 but certainly more effectively. The occult rock tunes and the antichristian themes, along of course with their eccentric look, produce an altogether captivating result. From the first notes of the intro “Infestissumam” and the follow-up “Per Aspera Ad Inferi” to the final “Monstrance Clock”, the album is a delight. And I simply can’t get enough of the waltz-like “Secular Haze”. “Infestissumam” may not be the most original album, but as for the songwriting, Ghost outdid themselves, and the crystal production only highlights every second of the songs. A hostile work indeed! - Stella Papaspyropoulou

12 Riverside – Shrine of New Generation Slaves

I can still remember myself writing the first lines of the review on “Rapid Eye Movement”, back in 2007 when it was released. “Shrine Of A New Generation Slaves” musically follows the path of the previous albums, but contains some elements that differentiates it from the others. The lyrics once again are deep, full of feelings and emotions which force you to search into the depths of your mind in order to find who you really are. Moreover, don’t misunderstand the word “slave”, since Riverside used this expression having in mind all these people who feel disappointed with their life and get trapped in their own mind. People who build a wall inside their head as they say in the lyrics in “The Depth Of Self-Delusion”. - Manos Spanos

11 Immolation – Kingdom Of Conspiracy

New York’s Immolation is a death metal phenomenon, which shows that not only you can remain a large band who doesn’t look in the past, but it also takes large steps forward with each release, without losing a simple bit of their very special sound and identity. Seeing them twice for the promotion of their previous masterpiece ‘’Majesty & Decay’’, Ross Dolan promised that they’d release the fastest, heaviest and sickest Immolation album ever. I must say that he’s close enough to all these, as ‘’Kingdom Of Conspiracy’’ is so fast at parts, so heavy in riffs and so sick in atmosphere as always, that it was inevitably one of the best albums of 2013. No other American death metal band of the past can produce the quality, energy and speciality Immolation offer. It is more possible for hell to freeze over, than for Immolation to release a non great album.  - Aggelos “Redneck” Katsouras

10 Dream Theater – Dream Theater

This is definitely the most controversial release in the history of Dream Theater. So many thoughts on this album, many claim that they have reached a dead end and simply copy themselves again and again, while others think that they still have things to give. New fans have said that it was rather disappointing as an album while older fans, who thought other recent releases where too mediocre, have found something special about the new self titled album. My opinion is somewhere in between but personally I am not the best judge because I simply worship them. One thing is a fact, their massively growing fan base that leaves no doubt that DT do their job pretty well.  The conclusion on this matter is that you can’t wait from a band that has defined how the genre should sound and has written so many masterpieces, present another breakthrough after all these years. Those who are waiting for something like that shouldn’t bother listening to it.  - Steve Drax

09 Ihsahn – Das Seelenbrechen

What’s wrong with reading the Metalpaths.com list of the top 20 albums of year 2013? Nothing but METAL ladies and gentlemen!!!“Das Seelenbrechen” by Ihsahn absolutely blew me away! This record was one of this year’s top expectations, and my imagination of what to expect, never really would have made it that far if these sounds hadn’t been true!!! Ihsahn’s chameleon abilities to divert his influences and music genius into his own kind of music is really amazing.. Dialogues, soundscapes and culture unveil from this bizarre attempt of mixing jazz elements into black metal and post rock empty hallways with vast bombasting elements all in one record! He happens to take place into the most respected icons in the Metal Pantheon for me and as it seems for many in this ‘zine which means no matter what…this record is pure metal in its philosophy and its sound as well…  - Andrew Koran

08 Rotting Christ – Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy

Rotting Christ, the all-time classic extreme metal band of Greece. Forefathers of the Greek Black metal scene among others (Varathron, Necromantia, Zemial), releasing from consistent to amazing records. This years’ record “Kata Ton Daimona Eautou” is an album equally as great as its predeccessors (maybe with the exception of the amazing “Theogonia”) with songs like the title track, “666″, “Welcome To Hell”, “In Yumen-Xibalba” and “Gilgames” that really stand the test of live shows next to their undisputed classics. With a regular formula in their songs, Rotting Christ expand their lyrical content and musical influences in civilizations from all around the globe preserving their legend for years to come. NON SERVIAM!!  - John Savvidis

07 Carcass – Surgical Steel

In 1985 a band under the name Disattack was formed from Bill Steer and Ken Owen. After awhile and with another member (Jeff Walker) join in the band changed its name to Carcass. The impact of their debut album was immense. From the start in 1988 and with every album they produced, they were always on top of the extreme metal news. They are considered pioneers for the genres of grindcore, gore death metal and later for melodic death metal. The demise of this great band came in 1996 with their “Swansong”. Now after 17 years of absence in the recording department the comeback of this great band. Carcass reformed in 2007 for some tours. And then in September of 2013 “Surgical Steel” was here. There were many positive reviews. Rightfully for the album is great overall. Of course in the contrary there are opinions who claim that Carcass have been sold out with this recording. Well think twice I must say because the doctors have returned for good. My only hope is that they are here to stay for a long time.  - Kostas “Krotidas” Triantafyllidis

06 Ulcerate – Vermis

A year passed by and many death metal albums were greeted with big expectations. One of these albums was the return of New Zealanders named Ulcerate. The abilities of the band are without doubt impressive. The superior technicality is one of their top elements. The other is the grim and gloomy atmosphere of each of their albums. “Vermis” is again on the top albums of the year after 2011’s “The Destroyer Of All”. Their tutors – Gorguts – must be proud. It is truly one of the cases where the student has overtaken their teacher. And the student takes the whole concept to the next level. “Vermis” brings the volatility of Gorguts to a new dimension. Their chaotic creations are beyond compare. It is like Cthullu is awakening! Listening to the sounds that Ulcerate produce, you feel like Nyarlathotep is crawling towards you. Each album of these guys is a must for any fan of extreme.  - Kostas “Krotidas” Triantafyllidis

05 Leprous – Coal

Leprous have been the silent extremes of progressive metal genre the last couple of years gaining audience day by day and hour by hour. Their rise up had and somewhat still has with them being embraced by Ihsahn’s charming hands that really has taken them to9 another level of complexity than their starting point with “Tall poppy Syndrome”…After “bilateral” though which was by far one huge step closest to the throne of Progressive metal they decided to take their chances through the hard road of being even more stripped and complex with their latest compositions that formed “Coal”…A highly anticipated release that although it reached our top 20 list really started to worry us more than expected about the future these guys hold for their sound! - Andrew Koran

04 Motorhead – Aftershock

In the field of rock/metal music in its most classic form there are bands that have proven themselves to be what I’d like to call “symbols”. Such bands are Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon and of course the almighty Motorhead. Unrelenting Rock ‘n’ Roll, never giving up for a single minute under the guidance of arguably the most original Rock ‘n’ Roller ever to walk this earth: Ian Fraiser “Lemmy” Kilmister. A man that after 40 years of non-compromising attitude, releases with his comrades in Motorhead a great album that just like its predecessor “The World Is Yours” 3 years ago, shows that they still have it in them to write kick ass songs to stand next to their golden classics. Songs like “Heartbreaker” are trademark Motor-stuff and “Lost Woman Blues” is just a sample of the more bluesy attitude found on this amazing release. Don’t forget them folks, their name is Motorhead and they play Rock ‘n’ Roll! - John Savvidis

03 Universe 217 – Never

This is a haunted album. It is the thoughts before sleep coming into musical existence. It is the insecurities, the fears, the anxiety and the agony, the void and the eternity. It is the confessions of a lifetime before death inside an abandoned mansion in the woods. It is what Universe 217 have been doing since their beginning in 2007 rendering us once more unable to comprehend what we are listening . It is the unique blend of slow dragging doom metal with an ambient background, distilled through a discrete level of psychedelia and elevated to absolute mental greatness by Tania’s awe inspiring, otherworldly vocals. If that woman made art 200 years ago she would be accused of association with the devil, just like the violinist Nicollo Paganini, because the talent of them both cannot be explained in earthly terms. “Never” flows like a memory of places bleak but beautiful, of “Familiar places”, as they so aptly named the previous release. - Achilles Pantoyos

02 The Ocean – Pelagial

The Ocean collective jumped again ahead, to establish another masterpiece and create an album even more complete compared to Anthropocentric and Heliocentric. Based on pelagic depths and on Tarkovsky’s ‘Stalker’, Pelagial made an impact on the music scene with its original theme and its musically progression from easier songs to heavier and claustrophobic ones. Clean vocals are mixed with brutal ones and the guitar riffs change at a quick and methodical way. Without a doubt, “Pelagial” is the peak in The Ocean’s career, receiving positive criticism from every music webzine and magazine. - Kostas Tsotsanis

01 Cult Of Luna – Vertikal

From the very first hearing of “Vertikal” I knew that this album would be one of the best of the year and…here we are! “Vertikal” grabbed the 1st position on this tribute and in my opinion the Swedes really deserves it! Excellently structured and highly painful “Vertikal” is an album from the heart offering a trippy long-lasting journey into the depths of post/sludge metal abyss. The triumphant songs “I: The Weapon” and “In Awe Of” are buried inside my mind while the gargantuan “Vicarious Redemption” (almost 19 minutes length!!!), still blows me away each time I’m listening to it. Put the CD on, close your eyes, and enjoy once more the best album of 2013!   - Panagiotis Karagiannidis

Three artists whose bands are being featured in the tribute above, leave their comments and wishes for 2014:

Tania – Universe217: “We’d like to thank you for supporting us in 2013 and for loving “Never”. We’ll be out giging in 2014 for sure. Happy and strong new year. Doom on!”

Sakis – Rotting Christ: “Thank you very much for including our record in your top20 list. It’s a real honor for us. My wish for 2014 is to do what thou wilt and act Kata Ton Daimona Eaytou!”

Johannes Persson – Cult Of Luna: “After the long road we had travelled to finish ”Vertikal” just releasing it was a reward itself. Our only ambition was to write the best album we’ve ever done and in our opinion we have succeeded. However, we never expected the fantastic response that “Vertikal” got and for that we are grateful. From the Cult of Luna camp we want to wish you all a great 2014. Thank you for listening.”
