Greetings, fellow men… As Diablo is still on his usual rounds, picking up random men and women to carry out his evil machinations as well as sumptuous meals. It is up to me and my brethren to thwart his seemingly shallow ideas of world domination. One little way to do just that is to find the right sort of music (metal) and blare it down his way. Oh yes..

Most if not all albums here are free-of-cost downloadables. If you haven’t gone through the first edition of this series, make sure you check it out here.

1. Negative Voice – Infinite Dissonance

The Russian Federation is slowly becoming a force to be reckoned with, especially so in the more heavier and brutal death metal department. Abominable Putridity, Katalepsy and Kartikeya come to mind when the word Russia is thrown about. Yet, given the vast tracts of frozen land and the desolation that it is accompanied by, sometimes, demands a more brooding form of music. Negative Voice will probably fill in that requirement. They traverse the dank and doomy dungeons carved out by seminal ‘Draconian Times’ era Paradise Lost. But they do so with a bit of modern refinement that you see in bands like October Tide, Warning and Daylight Dies. It’s about long winding riffs entangling each other and making a fine tapestry of melodious melancholy. Thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless.

2. Nemertines – Mechta O Mechte

Russians again, but this time it is djent. Forever the djenteel of this much maligned microcosm have been too consumed in stomping out the best groove. A rat race which seems to have left a ton of uninteresting barf puddles as riffs in its wake. Same old shit, just better production. Nemertines on the other hand rely on simple song structure and atmosphere. If you are thinking about a ‘go-happy-ethereal’ sort of approach for atmosphere, then you’ve never been farther from the truth. Nemertines rely on its ability to conjure up a dark and pensive surrounding. Definitely not the wankathon you’d expect it to be.

3. No Omega – Shame

When the fiery and unrelenting assault of the hardcore punk sound is traded in for a sludgier atmosphere with an apocalyptic lilt, it is quite the combination. The Swiss band No Omega experiments with this mashing of genres to great success. What you have in the end is hardcore that weighs down on you with all its depth and unwavering in direction. Yet with all that, the vocals are still distinctly hardcore with an emotive edge, but all the more engaging for it.

Picture yourself as the object between the jaws of a pincer.
