India ready to address Sri Lanka’s concerns on economy pact

India has come forward to host a workshop later this month in Colombo on the proposed Economic and Technological Cooperation Agreement to address concerns on the side of Sri Lanka.

The initiative of India was in response to criticism from certain quarters that the proposed agreement would take away jobs of Sri Lankan professionals.

Arun Jaitley launches Finance Ministry’s official YouTube channel

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley launched the official YouTube channel of the Ministry with a view to disseminate information on a real-time basis.

Both at the ministerial level as well as at the level of secretaries and officials, there are a series of announcements and explanations with regard to where we stand in terms of the economy.

The channel showcases videos featuring schemes launched by the PM – Jan Dhan Yojana Launch, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, Insurance schemes, among several others. The channel also has videos of the reforms introduced in the Union Budget 2015 and several speeches of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley at Press Conferences.

Free local SIM for foreign tourists on arrival

International visitors to India availing the electronic Tourist Visa (eTV) facility would soon get SIM cards on their arrival in the country. The move is not only aimed at attracting more foreign tourists to make India a global holiday destination but also to address security concerns.

The proposal was made by the Ministry of Tourism to give a boost to the sector in the country by sending a message that international tourists can plan a hassle-free visit to India.

Sources said there is a view that only BSNL SIM cards should be provided since it’s a state-owned telecom company but a final decision is awaited.

Government plans to sell its books directly via Amazon, Flipkart

The government plans to start directly offering the books it publishes through online platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart and Google Play.

The process is likely to start with the annual ‘India’ compendium followed by another 150 books. It also plans to start selling digital versions at a 25% discount.

The Publications Division of the information and broadcasting ministry is in talks with ecommerce companies on the plan, said officials aware of the matter. “Now, the publications division wants to sell it directly also. We are gearing up for this.” This year’s ‘India’ book is likely to be launched on February 18.

Strong quake hits Taiwan

Rescuers in the southern Taiwanese city of Tainan pulled out 221 people from two residential high-rises that collapsed when a shallow 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck before dawn Saturday, leaving still others trapped inside.

Firefighters and soldiers scrambled to the site with ladders, cranes and other equipment and extracted dazed survivors from the buildings that were lying on one side of the road.

Paytm ties up with Indian Oil for petrol payment

Online payments and m-commerce platform, Paytm tied up with Indian Oil to let its users pay for petrol through its mobile wallet. The news was shared by Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Paytm Founder and CEO, on his Facebook timeline.

Adani Power to build $2 billion power plant

Adani Power Ltd will soon sign a deal to set up a $2.2 billion coal-based power plant in eastern Jharkhand state, as its controlling shareholder aims to nearly double capacity this decade.

The utility, controlled by billionaire Gautam Adani, plans to build two power units with a total capacity of 1,600 megawatts (MW) and construction could begin by December.

Tata Motors launches contest for renaming Zica

Previously named Zica, an acronym derived from Zippy Car, the hatchback was first publicly showcased at the Auto Expo 2016 in New Delhi.

While it carries the ‘Zica’ label for the duration of the event, the new name will be announced after a few weeks, Over the next three days, the company will receive all entries through its social media channels.

WhatsApp groups can now have up to 256 members

WhatsApp groups are perhaps one of the most buzzing closed social networks. The 50-member limit was upped to 100 in November 2014 and now the Facebook-owned instant messaging service has more than doubled the limit to 256.

This is however yet to be available to all WhatsApp users and quite like many other features, this is being added to the version of the Android app that can be downloaded directly from its website.

Facebook had acquired WhatsApp for $22 billion in 2014.

The founder of soul group Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White, has died in the US.

White 74 suffered from Parkinson’s Disease.

Earth, Wind & Fire were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, and Maurice was individually inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010.

Popularly known by his nickname of Reese.
