Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will present the Rail Budget for 2016-17 in Parliament.This will be his second Rail Budget after assuming charge of the ministry.
Mr Prabhu said that the Rail Budget will cater to the needs of all satisfactorily as a lot of effort has gone into its preparation. He said, it has been prepared in the interest of the nation and railways and he has taken the ground reality into consideration before finalising it.
Fast-acting anti-rabies drug set for India launch
The first fast-acting anti-rabies drug of the world, which instantly deactivates the rabies virus and provides immediate protection in severe dog bite cases, is set for a launch in India this year.
The drug, rabies human monoclonal antibody (RMAb), has been developed by Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) and US-based Mass Biologics of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. It has been found safe and effective during various phases of human clinical trials spanning nine years in India and abroad.
E-tourist visa extended to 37 more nations
Finance minister Arun Jaitley in his 2015-16 budget speech, the home ministry will extend e-tourist visa scheme to 37 more nations starting Friday, taking the number of beneficiary countries to 150.
The countries added in the latest round include Albania, Austria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Botswana, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Comoros, Cote D’Ivoire, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Eritrea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Greece, Guinea, Iceland, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Moldova, Namibia, Romania, San Marino, Senegal, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, Swaziland, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Trinidad & Tobago, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Mortaza set to become UNDP’s goodwill ambassador
Bangladesh limited-overs captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza is set to be named as the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) “national goodwill ambassador for youth”. The appointment will be made official a signing ceremony.
Mashrafe, who is currently the ODI and Twenty20 skipper, said that he had received the proposal a month ago and was extremely excited to receive the opportunity.
India’s first nuclear submarine INS Arihant ready for operations, passes deep sea tests
India’s first nuclear armed submarine is now ready for full fledged operations, having passed several deep sea diving drills as well as weapons launch tests over the past five months and a formal induction into the naval fleet is only a political call away.
Multiple officials closely associated with the project to operationalize the INS Arihant nuclear missile submarine have confirmed to ET that the indigenously-built boat is now fully-operational and over the past few months, several weapon tests have taken place in secrecy that have proven the capabilities of the vessel.
The Arihant, which is the first of five nuclear missile submarines or SSBNs planned for induction, has also undergone deep sea dives off Vishakhapatnam where it was build.

The birders of Goa have sighted a new bird Falcated Duck, a very rare vagrant species to the south of India, which became the latest addition to the checklist of ‘Birds of Goa’.
India to host third Asia Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation
The third edition of the Asia Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation will start from April 12 and this time, India will play the host. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate the multi-national ministerial conference.
There will be 13 participating countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
As India is home to around 70 percent of the global tiger population, it will play a pivotal role in the collaborative movement.
Arunachal Pradesh CM faces floor test
The newly sworn-in chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh Kalikho Pul will take to floor test. Ahead of the confidence motion, the Pul government received a shot in the arm with eight MLAs, who are believed to be loyalists of former chief minister Nabam Tuki.
With the joining of the eight MLAs, the strength of the Pul camp has now grown to 41, including 28 Congress members, 11 BJP and two Independents. The House has an effective strength of 58, though the original strength was 60.
Hottest day in Kashmir in 76 years
Kashmir witnessed the hottest day in February in 76 years as the mercury rose to 20.6 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, more than 10 degrees above normal for this time of the year.
Srinagar had recorded a high of 20.6 degrees Celsius in the month of February in 1940. After a gap of 76 years, the same temperature was recorded yesterday,” Director local Meteorological department Sonum Lotus.

Tennis star Sania Mirza, Indian batting mainstay Virat Kohli and top-seeded badminton player Saina Nehwal lead the pack of over 50 Indians in Forbes’ inaugural list of top “promising young leaders and game changers” under the age of 30 in Asia.
As many as 56 Indians feature in the list with 27-year old Kohli, Mirza and Nehwal and 26-year old actress Shraddha Kapoor leading the pack.
IBSAMAR 2016: Navies of Brazil, India and South Africa to hold exercise off Goa coast
Brazil, India and South Africa will participate in a joint exercise off Goa coast as part of the second phase of ‘IBSAMAR’, a senior Naval officer said.
“The second phase of IBSAMAR would be held off Goa coast from February 23, 2016. During the first phase, we had held interactions in the harbour,” Indian Navy’s Flag Officer Commanding, Goa Area, Real Admiral Puneet Bahl.
Centre appoints three Information Commissioners
The Central government appointed three Commissioners at the Central Information Commission (CIC).
Amitava Bhattacharyya, 1980 batch IAS officer; Bimal Julka, 1979 batch IAS officer; and Divya Prakash Sinha, 1979 batch IPS officer, have been made Information Commissioners.
The appointments have been made for a term of five years or till the appointees turn 65.
Mr. Bhattacharyya was the Staff Selection Commission Chairman. Mr. Julka retired as Secretary, Information and Broadcasting Ministry. He also worked as a Financial Adviser and Special Secretary in the External Affairs Ministry.
MSEI appoints Udai Kumar as full-time MD and CEO
Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India Ltd, formerly known as MCX Stock Exchange (MCX-SX) of India Ltd, appointed Udai Kumar as managing director and chief executive on a permanent basis after receiving regulatory approval.
The SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) approval comes after a stringent shortlisting process and interviews by the Selection Committee.
Jet Airways appoints Rahul Taneja as Chief People Officer
Jet AirwaysBSE said it has appointed Rahul Taneja as Chief People Officer and he would be responsible for shaping the group’s operations and performance.

KN Vyas Appointed Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Chief
Distinguished scientist KN Vyas was appointed Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the country’s premier multi-disciplinary nuclear research centre.
He succeeds Shekar Basu, who was in October appointed as Atomic Energy Secretary and Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission.

Mr Vyas, who has made outstanding contributions in the area of design and development of a novel fuel, is a recipient of the Science and Technical Excellence awards.
He is currently working as the associate director at BARC, as per its website.
The BARC is India’s premier nuclear research facility based in Mumbai.
Facebook launches ‘Reactions’ worldwide
Facebook said that “Reactions”, an extension of the “Like” button, was now available worldwide.
The social network launched a pilot of “Reactions” – which allows users to select from seven emotions including “like” and “wow” – in Ireland and Spain in October.
Kanavu Variyam Wins Remi Award at WorldFest
Director Arun Chidambaram’s Kanavu Variyam has won the Remi Award at the 49th WorldFest Houston International, which will be held from April 8-17, 2016. WorldFest is the oldest Independent Film & Video Festival in the World. Sources claim that the film has been chosen from thousands of entries, from over 43 movie-producing nations worldwide.
Kanavu Variyam’s world premiere will be at WorldFest. In addition to playing the lead role and directing the movie, Arun has written the story, screenplay, dialogues and lyrics for Kanavu Variyam.
Apart from this, Kanavu Variyam has won the Special Jury award at the National Science Film Festival 2016, organised by the Government of India. Arun Chidambaram completed his Masters in the US and worked for JP Morgan Chase in Chicago. LIC introduces third gender option in its proposal form; move cleared by IRDA
The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), which controls close to 70% of the life insurance market, has introduced the third gender as an option in its proposal forms in line with Supreme Court 2014 verdict recognising it.
Though the National Pension System also recognises the third gender, other insurance companies and mutual funds do not seek this information.
The knowyour-customer (KYC) process, a prerequisite for making investments or opening bank accounts, also does not accommodate the third gender as an option. Incidentally, the option was included in Indian passports more than 10 years ago in 2005.
RBI extends currency swap arrangement with SAARC nations
In order to enhance economic cooperation and strengthen financial stability, RBI has extended the $2 billion currency swap arrangement to SAARC nations till mid-November 2017.
The Reserve Bank said in a notification that it has decided to extend the SAARC Currency Swap Arrangement till November 14, 2017.
The SAARC Swap Arrangement was offered by the RBI to SAARC nations on November 15, 2012.
The facility will be available to all SAARC member countries Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
FIFA reduces Sepp Blatter, Michel Platini bans from eight to six years
Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini had their bans from soccer reduced from eight years to six, two days before the sport’s ruling body tries to turn the page on years of scandals by electing a new president.
Blatter and Platini were initially found guilty of wrong doing by FIFA’s independent ethics committee, which is led by a German judge, over a previously-secret 2011 financial transaction. FIFA President Blatter authorized a payment of 2 million Swiss francs ($2 million) to UEFA president Platini which was found to be unethical and a conflict of interest.
Fidel’s brother Ramon Castro dies
Ramon Castro, a life-long rancher and farmer who bore a strong physical resemblance to younger brother Fidel Castro, has died. He was 91.
Widely known by his nickname “Mongo,” the white-bearded Ramon Castro preferred tending crops and livestock to the revolutionary political life embraced by his younger siblings Fidel and Raul, who replaced Fidel as Cuba’s president in February 2008.
