Gujarat Govt’s new IT policy aims to create 1 mn new jobs
The Gujarat Government announced a new IT/ITes Policy and Incentive Scheme (2016-21), aiming to promote the sector by providing subsidies to investors and create 10 lakh new jobs.
Saurabh Patel said the new policy aimed at scaling up the current investment in this sector by 10 times, and turnover to $ 15 billion. It also aims to increase IT-ITes sector exports from the state to $ 2 billion per annum.
Anil Agarwal to set up India’s first LCD panel plant
Vedanta Group’s owner Anil Agarwal is setting up the country’s first LCD panel manufacturing plant in Maharashtra with an investment of $10 billion ( Rs 68,000 crore).
The investment is through a new company called Twinstar Display Technologies, which is promoted by holding company Volcano Investments, chairman Agarwal said in an exclusive interview with ET. The metals tycoon is set to sign a memorandum of understanding with Maharashtra government on the first day of ‘Make in India’ week.
Make in India week: Business week starts today
The ‘Make in India’ Week, touted as the largest business expo hosted by the country, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
At least four MoUs worth at least Rs 64,000 crore are expected to be signed on the first day of the event.
Modi will be accompanied by the prime ministers of Sweden and Finland, and the Polish deputy PM. In attendance will be 2,500 foreign delegates and 8,000 representatives of Indian companies.
India third most disaster prone in 2015: UN report
India has been ranked third among the top five most disaster hit countries in 2015, the hottest year on record, having suffered more than 2,800 deaths and over Rs 22,000 crore economic damage in the last year alone.
Worldwide, the economic losses have been estimated at $66.5 billion and over 22,700 people dead.
After China and the US, which have been hit by 26 and 22 disasters respectively last year, India is the most affected country having suffered 19 disasters in 2015, according to a study released by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).
India to summon US Ambassador over Washington nod for sale of eight F-16 fighters to Pakistan
The US government said it had approved the sale to Pakistan of up to eight F-16 fighter jets built by Lockheed Martin Corp, radar and other equipment in a deal valued at $699 million.
The agency said the F-16s would allow Pakistan’s Air Force to operate in all-weather environments and at night, while improving its self-defense capability and bolstering its ability to conduct counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations.
Lawmakers have 30 days to block the sale, although such action is rare since deals are well-vetted before any formal notification.
TERI asks RK Pachauri to go on indefinite leave, Ashok Chawla appointed new chairman
TERI board sent its Executive Vice Chairman Dr RK Pachauri on indefinite leave and appointed former finance secretary Ashok Chawla as its new chairman.
The council welcomed former Competition Commission chief Ashok Chawla as its new chairman.
The council also inducted the new Director General Ajay Mathur as a member of the council who will operate with full executive powers.
Ramesh Abhishek to be next Industry Secretary
The government has appointed 1982 batch Bihar cadre IAS officer Ramesh Abhishek as the next Secretary to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) in the Commerce and Industry Ministry that spearheads the Make In India and Startup India programmes.
Present secretary Amitabh Kant is due to retire on February 29 and Mr. Abhishek, who is presently posted in the cabinet secretariat as Secretary (Performance Management).
Facebook India’s managing director Kirthiga Reddy stepping down
Facebook India’s managing director Kirthiga Reddy has announced she will be stepping down and moving back to the US after six years in the role.
Reddy said in a post on Facebook that she will be returning to the US with her family in the next six to 12 months as part of a “natural transition” for her school-age children, describing the move as “bittersweet”.
She will work at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California.
Fifa: Ex-general secretary Jerome Valcke banned for 12 years
The governing body’s independent ethics committee also fined the 55-year-old 100,000 Swiss francs (£70,800) after it investigated allegations of misconduct relating to sales of World Cup tickets.
Regarding the 12-year ban imposed , Amongst other things, the adjudicatory chamber found that a sports marketing firm had gained an undue advantage from the selling of World Cup tickets.
Ease of doing biz: Govt to soon introduce Business Identification Number for companies
To improve ease of doing business, the government will soon introduce Business Identification Number (BIN) for companies, doing away with multiple registration numbers a single entity needs to obtain for various regulatory purposes.
The BIN would act as an identification number for different regulatory purposes and do away with the need for procuring separate registration numbers such as Company Identification Number and Labour Identification Number.
As per the proposal, the permanent account number (PAN) may become the BIN for companies.
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion is discussing the matter with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
Time acquires Myspace, creates 2004’s most fearsome media giant
Time Inc. said it has acquired what’s left of social networking ghost town Myspace.
The media giant will take on ownership of Myspace as part of a larger acquisition of parent company Viant, an advertising and data analytic firm. Viant acquired Myspace from News Corp in 2011.
Oracle to invest $400 m in new campus in Bengaluru
Making her maiden trip to India, Safra Catz, Chief Executive Officer, Oracle, on her whirlwind visit to the national capital met the powers that be including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

SBI Cap seeks to sell Kingfisher House in Mumbai
SBICAP Trustee Co. Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of investment bank SBI Capital Markets Ltd (SBI Cap), has initiated the process for selling Kingfisher House, the headquarters of grounded airline Kingfisher Airlines Ltd, as part of its efforts at recovering loans from its promoter Vijay Mallya.
SBI Cap, the unit of India’s largest public sector bank State Bank of India (SBI), published a public notice for sale of Kingfisher House near Mumbai’s domestic airport through e-auction under the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act (Sarfaesi), 2002, to recover dues.
RBI asks banks to submit proforma Ind AS financial statements from Sept
RBI wanting banks to go the IFRS way, the central bank has issued new directives on the implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) converged Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS) by banks.
Banks have been asked to submit proforma Ind AS financial statements to the RBI from the half-year ended September 30, 2016, onwards.
UAE’s Central Bank signs pact for currency swap
The RBI signed a pact with the Central Bank of the UAE to enter into a Currency Swap Agreement, which is aimed at strengthening economic ties with the Gulf nation.
The MoU was signed between RBI chief Raghuram Rajan and UAE’s Central Bank Governor Mubarak Rashed Al Mansoori.
India is UAE’s top trading partner while the latter is India’s third largest trading partner after the U.S. and China.

Brendon McCullum: Kiwi legend all set to play 100th consecutive Test
Retiring Kiwi cricketer Brendon McCullum is all set to play his 100th consecutive Test as he takes the field against Australia at the Basin Reserve.
Since making his debut on March 9, 2004 in Hamilton against South Africa, McCullum has played 99 consecutive Test matches for New Zealand so far.
The 34-year-old, who was given a fitting farewell by his team-mates in limited-overs cricket with a series win over Australia, said it would be nice to win the series in whites as well.
The record of playing most consecutive Tests at any stage of a career is still held by Allan Border (153 Tests).
Senior BJP leader Visheshwar Ojha shot in Bihar, party threatens protests
BJP’s Bihar vice-president and prominent Bhojpur leader Visheshwar Ojha, 53, was shot dead at Sonbarsha village in Ara. Ojha had just entered his car after meeting a relative at a marketplace when the assailants. He died on his way to the hospital.
Ojha had unsuccessfully contested the 2015 Bihar assembly polls against RJD nominee and former MP Shivanand Tiwari’s son Rahul Tiwari from Shahpur constituency.
