2,000 BCUK supporters demand William Hague take action to stop Rape and Sexual Violence

Posted on September 18, 2013

(Burma Times) Last week Valerie Vaz MP handed in more than 2,000 letters and campaign postcards from Burma Campaign UK supporters to the Foreign Office in London calling for action to end rape and sexual violence against women in Burma.

We are calling on the British government to highlight Burma when Foreign Secretary William Hague travels to New York for a major meeting at the UN to discuss sexual violence in conflict on 24 September.

Rape and sexual violence against ethnic women has been used as a weapon of war by the Burmese Army for decades. Burma Campaign UK has received a significant increase in reports of the use of rape and other forms of sexual violence against women by the government’s troops since the Burmese Army broke ceasefires two years ago in Kachin and Northern Shan State.

Drop the charges against Andy Hall

In May we wrote to you about Andy Hall, a researcher who is facing jail for exposing how a factory in Thailand was committing human rights abuses against migrant workers, including workers from Burma, in its factory.

This month a previously confidential letter from 5 UN Human Rights Council experts to the Thai government was released. The letter states that “the criminal charges against Mr. Andy Hall may be the result of his legitimate and peaceful actions gathering and publishing evidence of facts which, if accurate, would amount to serious human rights violations that warrant investigation by the authorities without delay. Further concern is expressed at the possibility that the charges against Mr. Hall may have a chilling effect on other human rights defenders and civil society activists working in Thailand and elsewhere.”

You can read the letter and take action here.
