01. Trentemøller - Always Something Better (DJ Tennis & Mind Against Remix) [Poker Flat Recordings | PFR156]

Poker Flat Recordings has been dealing out underground house music with a unique twist since 1999; from the defining debut "Loverboy" through the Bugnology series, acclaimed albums and worldwide club hits, Steve Bug's essential imprint has unearthed new talent, developed rising stars and welcomed veterans into the fold. Steve Bug's reputation as an exceptionally gifted DJ, producer and music connoisseur is about to carry the beloved imprint to its 15th anniversary, which will be celebrated with its finest collection of raw talent yet, starting with this first instalment of the anniversary series called Four Jacks.

Following the winning format of the series thus far, Part 4 boasts two slamming new remixes of classics from the vault, and two brand spanking new tracks from Poker Flat's stellar roster. Trentemøller's electro touchstone "Always Something Better" now draws the attention of DJ Tennis and Mind Against, who keep it slow and suspenseful with an intricate and modern deep house makeover.

Chardronnet vs. Afrilounge's "Shake It" was a defining moment of minimal tech in 2005, and Ejeca modernises it with a full-bodied treatment of peaktime melodic techno. The finale offering of new tracks created to mark the anniversary come from John Tejada & Justin Maxwell and Kindimmer; the former reach for vintage boompty house and noodly acid on "All We Know", while the latter opts for delicately minimalist deep house construction for the chiming, gleaming "Tremor"

With all four of Poker Flat's Four Jacks now been revealed, the label has played its winning hand once again, demonstrating just how they have stayed at the top of their game at 15 years deep.

02. DAVI - The Gates Of Babylon [RebelLion | RBL021]

Following up his 2013 Two Suns in the Sky EP, LA-based producer DAVI returns to Crosstown Rebels underground label Rebellion with The Gates of Babylon, an atmospheric two-song EP with a decidedly Middle Eastern tone.

An accomplished producer and DJ, DAVI has performed around the world, in intimate clubs and on stages large and small, from Exchange LA, Monday Social, Enter and Minus Showcase to festivals like TomorrowWorld. Besides his work with Rebellion, he has also released on Anjunadeep, Outside the Box Music, Treibstoff, Nine Records, Stripped Music Recordings, Bits & Pieces and there is sure to be more to follow.

“After Two Suns In the Sky, I wanted to release another similar EP with the same mystic vibe and harmonies, but I wanted the EP to be about something else,” DAVI explains. “As I might take a little break from making Middle Eastern sounds, I wanted this one to be as special. The word ‘Babylon’ is used in a larger sense to describe the modern world, and the importance it places on wealth and power.”

DAVI’s The Gates of Babylon is in stores Dec. 15 via Rebellion.

05. Neneh Cherry - Spit Three Times (Marlon Hoffstadt & HRRSN Remix) [Smalltown Supersound | STS248CDXB]

Deluxe 2CD version of Neneh Cherry’s critically acclaimed album Black Project. Second CD contains nine remixes by the likes of Joe Goddard, Loco Dice, Matt Karmil, Marlon Hoffstadt and Silvio & Itchy.

Neneh Cherry releases her first solo album in 16 years - a collaboration with RocketNumberNine, produced by Four Tet, and featuring a guest appearance by Robyn. The 10-track album, recorded and mixed over a five-day period is, out on Smalltown Supersound. It follows 2012’s 'The Cherry Thing', a collaborative record with free jazz, noise collective The Thing, which featured new versions of songs by The Stooges, MF Doom, Ornette Coleman, amongst others.

While her energy and demeanour may not have changed since the days of Rip Rig + Panic, musically, 'Blank Project' is a departure from anything Neneh has previously done, initially written as a means of working through personal tragedy. What stands out upon first listen is the album’s sparseness: loose drums and a few synthesizers are the only accompaniment to Neneh’s wildly poetic, sometimes-spoken, sometimes-screeching, soul-flooded and raw vocals. The space created by this minimal aesthetic leaves room for occasional pistes and flurries of rapid, yet throbbing and thunderous instrumentation. Featuring combined elements of beat poetry, avant-electronica and beautiful vocal melodies, it’s a record that uses simple ideas to create something entirely original. And despite the personal struggles Neneh was working through in writing this new material, the songs are far from introverted.

With 'Blank Project', Neneh continues to arrive at moments in musical history when there is an opportunity to subvert ideas of popular culture. She is subverting once again, only this time, although this record is musically bold, Neneh sees the stasis she’s challenging isn’t musical or societal, but her own.

On a more uplifting tip, ‘Another World’ is a modern twist on house with alluring melodies, while ‘Fallen Angel’ strips things down with an abstract melody.

07. Berkson & What - Make It True feat. JoJo De Freq (Mr Fingers Smooth Mix) [Play It Say It | PLAY005]

Berkson & What are next up to release on Seth Troxler’s acclaimed Play It Say It with ‘Make It True feat. JoJo De Freq’, a harmonious, radiant house jam with a sharp kick, acid tinged bassline, sultry vocals and smooth synths. Unsung hero Luke Solomon delivers a ‘Remix 4 Turnings’ version turing it into an almost new track with a grooving bassline, funky melody, spoken vocals and prominent hats. Legend Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers heads up the B-side, with his ‘Psychedelic Jungle Mix’ and ‘Smooth Mix’ doing just as they say.

o+ The release features an ‘Extended Mix’ to be released digitally, which is available on this promo. The original can be found on the 12” and on Berkson & What’s forthcoming album, ‘Keep Up Appearances’ to be released on their own Modelmaker in January 2015.

o+o Berkson & What are best known for their machine made house and techno with no frills but plenty of heft on labels like Poker Flat and Crosstown Rebels. Their music engages dancers in the head, heart and heel in equal measure. After Seth heard the original track at Sunwaves festival this summer, he contacted the duo to ask for an extended version and signed the release to the label, organising some fantastic remixes to complete the package.

o+o+ Vocalist JoJo De Freq used to host the notorious Nag Nag Nag parties in London. Snippets from a recording were used and worked into the track.

o+o+o Luke Solomon has covered it all from setting up the seminal label Classic Recordings with Derrick Carter to making the UK Top 10 with his band Freaks. Larry Heard is a musician widely known for the Chicago house music he produced in the mid-1980s with influential group Fingers Inc. and solo, most notably as Mr Fingers.
