3. Inside-Out

4. Inside-Out, Crossover

In shooting drills, use weak hand to make passes

Get hands above elbows when ready to receive the ball

Motion Ideas | UNC Wilmington Clinic Notes

Bring cutter to the screen, no screens to the baseline

Widen out to corner on basket cuts, space to NBA 3 point arc

Do not screen away in motion

Vs. Switch: More cuts, set flare screens, do not set down screens.

Flare screens allow you to slip the screen easier

Set screen, step back and pass, drive the ball.

Fast Break

3 Man Weave Drills

1. Wide

2. Tight

3. Continuous

4. Weave into 2-1

5. Weave into 3-3

6. 5 Man Weave into 3-2

General Thoughts from Coach Wainwright

Play combo defense on BOB

Score 75% on BOB

Be good around the basket first, then expand out

Hold people accountable on defense

Your feet put you in a position to use your hands on defense.

Work on press on a miss, good for late game.

Pressure the ball and where the ball is going

Post defense is heart of defense

Coach Wainwright charts 20 areas in off-season, such as down screen (Was it defended correctly?) defense and closeouts (Proper foot up?)

5 Things on Player Contract | UNC Wilmington Clinic Notes

1. Conversion

2. Convert to man

3. Rebounding

4. Box Out

Bust out break is tough to defend

Red/Green on Offense: Red is ball must go into post first, green is can shoot anywhere.

Has 1 player on the floor in green status at all times

Defense Calls: Blue (Sag), Gold (Overplay), White (Switch).

1996 Nike Clinic Notes-Charlotte

Get good people around you

Players must be accountable

Make good decisions

Have goals above 10 feet

Playing hard is a skill

Have traditions in your program, such as slapping the floor (Duke)

Take 4 toughest things you have to defend and add to your offense.

Practice offense as a whole 5-0 or 5-5, defense is breakdown.

Offense is read and react, defense is anticipation

What is your vision of how the game is played? What do you have to do to win the game?

Be honest with players, say what you mean.

Do not shorten your time on defensive work.

Sureness Drill: 3-3, complete 10 passes in a row. Defense cannot switch at first.

Good offense is spacing, movement, and roles.

Work 7-5 when practicing zone defense.

Run fast break directly into motion, no secondary actions

Play 4-4 to 3 baskets.

End offensive drills with transition defense, end defensive drills with offensive conversion.

Get early score or score late by making the defense work.

Practice against what you fear as a coach.

Ball Spins: Catch ball with feet in the air.

Dribble Hacks: Do not turn back to basket. Sweep ball hard. Take 2 dribbles.

Man in the Middle: Passer goes to defense and closes out.

Coach To Coach Video

Concentrate on your job at this time, not the job at Duke, UNC, etc.

Make sure your own work ethic is greater than that of the players.

No one player is greater than the entire system.

Does each player understand their role on the team?

Law of Diminishing Playing Time: Playing time drops as a players overall performance drops.

Better to play 4 to 5 minutes on a team that to play none at all on another team.

You earn playing time by your overall performance in practice, especially on the defensive end.

On post traps, double down on the post hard and fast. All other players rotate over to open men.

On post trap, if spot up man is on same side of the lane, recover to man. If spot up man is on the other side of the lane, help man in the High I spot rotates.

We attack when we get the ball. We do not pull it out and set up.

Do the players understand what we want off the break?

Outlet man should get out of bounds ready to throw outlet pass.

On Turnout Break, post run opposite the ball.

Keep ball side open for penetration by point guard off break.

On a bust out, get ball down and speed dribble.

On Down Screen, chase the cutter and show.

Get ball out of the middle of the floor.

Will give up backdoor, but must have pressure on the ball.

Miscellaneous Thoughts

The level of thinking that has gotten us to where we are will not get us to where we want to be.

How do you define yourself?

You have to be aggressive to get calls

Trap baseline penetration

Low with ball, tight with the ball

Teach how to foul

All post drills with contact

Don’t get beat sideline in press

Diagonals vs. Press

Cinco Threat: Attack Dribble, Pass, Shot, Pass Fake, Shot Fake

On all drives, shoulders lower than defenders hips, get piece of paint.

Eliminate reaching, block shots, and frustration fouls.

Designated shot blockers, everyone else take charges

Pressure the ball without penetration or fouling

Ball pressure does not mean reaching

Fundamental Lines (Team Mass Drill) | UNC Wilmington Clinic Notes

1. Quick Stop

2. Jump Shot

3. Rebound

4. Outlet

5. Jab Step

6. Sweep

7. Direct Drive

8. Crossover Drive

9. Front Pivot

10. Reverse Pivot

11. Shot Fake

12. Pass Fake

Foul situations on all 4-4/5-5 drills

Press in 4-4/5-5 Drills

Overemphasize to get what you want

Get low vs. trap

Offense is not equal opportunity

Great shooters are not necessary great scorers and vice versa

You don’t have to get a steal in the press, wear opponents down

Notes from All You Can Do by A.L. Williams

You have got to be you, but you’ve got to be the very best you possibly can be.

Rules for Goal Setting  |  UNC Wilmington Clinic Notes

1. Take inventory of your life

2. Become dissatisfied with second best

3. Make up your mind what you are going to do

4. Have a plan

5. Start where you are

6. Begin today to work your plans

Don’t be defeated by someone else’s opinion of me or my ideas.

First step: Start believing in yourself.

Start dreaming again, start believing your special again.

Get ready to fight for what you want.

Life will give you whatever you accept.

Life will turn out the way you see it turning out.

You’ve got to demand for yourself happiness and success.

You cannot judge a person by his background or by some score.

Don’t listen to failure messages.

Desire is the secret to winning.

Need specific goals with a time frame to achieve them.

Have a plan and decide how you will pay the price to reach the goal.

Desire gains strength when it has a concrete form

You win with fundamentals

Your people should always see you up and excited. You have to set the example of being excited.

Excitement is contagious

You need competition to make it happen.

A leader can never show fear, never show hurt, never show quit.

Always do more than is expected from you.

Nothing is as real as a dream. The world can change around you, but your dreams will not. Responsibilities need not erase it. Duties need not obscure it. Because the dream is within you, no one can take it away. -Tom Clancy

Focus on your potential, not your limitations

Devote yourself to something you do well

See yourself as successful

Break away from other peoples expectations

Build a network of support

Do not create a caste system in your team

How to Get Your Point Across in 30 Seconds…or Less by Milo Frank

30 seconds is the ideal time period because of time constraints and attention span. Avg. commercial is 30 seconds.

What is your goal in communication? What is your objective?

- Why am I going there?

- What do I want to achieve?

- Why do I want to have that conversation?

- Why do I want to write that letter?

- Why do I want to meet with this person?

- Why do I want this interview?

Have a clear cut objective in everything

Always be prepared

Know who the decision makers are

The Yellow Brick Road Approach

- What am I talking about?

- What is the basis of my plan?

- What is the single best statement that will lead to my objective?

- Can I comfortably build a case around this statement?

- Will other statements fit within or relate to this one?

- Will this relate to the needs and interest of my listener?

Get the persons attention

- What is the most unusual part of your subject?

- What is the most interesting and exciting part?

- What is the most dramatic?

- What is the most humorous?

Body of Communications answers who, what, where, when, why, and how

Ask for what you want at the end of your message.

Notes from The Final Season by Bill Parcels

I have always believed defense is the key to winning in any sport. I don’t care what the sport is. If you don’t have a good defense, you are not going to win.

On Bryan Cox: This guy has been great for us. He’s gained the respect of his teammates because he is the most honest player we have. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything and he doesn’t make excuses. If he doesn’t do a good job, he says it’s his fault and he moves on.

When you are losing, you coach better. When you are winning, you accept some things that have happened, even though you should not have, because you won. When you lose, you are on top of every detail.

I never complain about officials. I do not want to be fighting two opponents.

Quotes

None but men of strong passions are capable of rising to greatness

Men are not limited by the place of their birth, nor by the color of their skin, but by the size of their hope.

Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.

In the process of becoming all that you can be, it is important to remember that success materializes after the work has been done, but periodically surfaces for moments to show that it is coming.

Have a passion for excellence

F Stands for feedback

When you know you have not cheated in your preparation, it makes you mentally tough.
