From the shell (4 out 1 in) we want to attack, no standing, make your play (post feed, shoot drive, pass) relentless pressure

First 3 drills are everyday drills
Full speed passing, and finishing.
To gain any advantage against our opponents you must go full speed.
3 man weave- 3 passes, no hitting the floor, straight pases vs lobs, make 16-18 consecutive before going on to the next drill –stride stop in weave ½ steps and freeze, up and back 1 ball, 2 layups, count them out, has to be the correct hand or start over, even on the rebound
2nd Drill “RUSH”
3 Lines – no weave 3 passes to finish
Passer(middle) follows his pass to the corner and becomes the outlet, finisher is opposite wing, Rebounder outlets to the finisher, back to rebounder on the way back and the middle who passed opposite and followed his pass

2. Pass pass – get 3 passes before half court and get the wing bank jump shot (same rules as above).
3. Pass and break-rebound outlet, long diagnol pass for the bank shot, rebounder needs to get the board at the other end
4. 2 on 1 – react to the defense `let the defender tell you what to do’
5. Long pass – reounder outlet, 1 dribble, up over the top of the defense, working on your long pass, put a coach at the top of the key.
Get used to playing and passing full speed.

9 important teaching points for your drills.
1. It is a game of inches (early in the game attack feet, make them change their stance, 1 direction they have to change their stance, 1 they don’t) John Stockton –attack the ankles, attack the hip – flop between ankle a hip inches
2. Pound dribble – get the ball quicker, if you aren’t quick you better have quick ball. If you pound the ball it will be in your hand more, you be able more with it, if you are able do more with it you will be able to play more.
3. Play the game low to high – avoid dipping the ball.
4. It’s a shoulders game- posting get your shoulders below the guy guarding you, I want my elbow into his elbow. On defense, get your shoulders below offense on ball, one on one get your shoulders below the defense.
3 things you want when you beat a player.
1. It creates 1 more dribble and the floor shrinks and allows you to power into the gap.

Chair layups- 2 chairs on the chairs, a ball on each chair, a chair person and a rebounder to pass to the chair person to put the ball back o nthe chair,
Change it with the posts and back pedal to the chair and get the layup
Chairs at half court- inside defense outside chair offense –both guys go 1 with the ball.. move the defense chair in based on speed
Change the chairs to the elbows for bigs
Chairs on wings- defense and offense go around the chairs, and power slide dribble (shoulders game)
Mikan style with the chairs to teach the jump hook –ten toes to the sideline, continious jump hooks, move the chairs out continious drop steps
Chairs at the elbow- player at the top of the key, fake left, go right right, pick up the ball and shoot
Reverse elbow pickup, same drill go past the chair, touch the elbow and shoot it in the middle
2 on 2 on the block stacked both ends- 1 on 1 into 3 on 3, 12 players active at one time, zig zag and then pop out…catch post feed and basket cut

1. It is not what you teach it is what you bring to the floor (bring enthusiasm and intensity for getting better).
2. 2. At some point- we have got fix this thing, get on the floor with your players, teach them the game, every profession has continuing education, coaches need to teach more than just letting them play, teach with a passion

You get beat if you are down 6 with 3 minutes to go and shoot all 3s. You have to get the clock stopped.
Spacing for the flex offense 4 out around 1.
Everyone above the FT line
Flex cutter – go if your guy is jumping to the ball and see if you can make the backscreeners man show a little help
Step up, show, and cut when the ball leaves his hand.
Reverse the ball
Flex cutter if his man goes over the top of the defense, reversal should from the weakside top forward to weakside guard, allows a post up sealing the defense on the top side if defense went over the screen
On reversal across the top
Downscreen – allows a curl
Backscreen – allows the lob
And allows isoloation on the other wing with the post
Wings – just be ready to cut

Get to the backscreen – get yourself and the jammer below the screen and cut over the top.

Keep as much pressure on the ball as possible. Defend the delivery point. On the line up the line,(shrinking the gaps in our defense) give the illusion they are open, work on anticipation.
5 man shell drill (assistant coach)
If you are not guarding the ball you are 1 pass away or more than away. Shrink the gap and control the gap. Give the illusion that there are no gaps. Ass to the ball, hand in passing lane, teach that recovery is key.
On and up the line to the basketball.
Beyond 2 steps from the 3 point line he no longer has to be on the line just up the line, protecting penetration
Third thing – the post has to be on the line up the line chin on shoulders ass to the ball fronting the post
Helpside position – apex of a triangle FT line or below, the help needs to be on the midline, wing needs to ball pressure, closeout 1 thousand 1 up with hands, we are toying with the lane line, and have heavier pressure on the ball wing, more level off position on the wing vs force baseline ball-you-basket defense.
Low post is defined as – midpost and down, ball below the FT line on the wing. Understand the position that is defined as post.
Defenders must be at the level of level of the basketball
High post is 1 pass away – on the line up the line Deny
Why front the post?
1. Keep it out of red zone
2. Give early help on penetration

Skinny in and out of help position to avoid the collision between defenders.
Post defense-toughness survival of the fittest, on high low the low needs to sit and fight to knock the defender back.
Usually the weakest thing a team does is pass the ball.
4 groups of drills (from above)
Each one teaches different skill, everyday have the 9 minutes of these skills, after these 1 on 1, then 3 on 3s, then 4 on 4s, then 5 on 5s. 1 skill at time.
2 on 2 Help in recover – we teach 1 skill in drill (Dick Bennett) in building.
Drill – drive the gap, back dribble 2 x’s and then on the 3rd penetrate and recover. Never help up, help over, you help with the ability to recover. 1st day it takes 6 minutes to teach and after that it is a 2 minute drill.
2 on 2 –Forward Center help and recover
Wing penetrate 2 times and back dribble out. On the third try to turn the quarter. Early help leads to early recover. Leaders in steals get help in helping situations. When you think the ball is stopped and then recovered to your man. Read the situation.
3 on 3 Cross screen, down screen
50 or 60 terms and phrases in your program to teach and call out over the course of a game. After 6 weeks everyone is speaking the same language.
In all screen situations. The man guarding the screen is responsible for stopping the basketball.
Wing entry- post fronted. Cross screen, the fronter is going stay low and absorb the cutter if he comes low. The man defending the cutter always goes over the top and moves to front.
On the downscreen they are going to skinny up and get through.

2-19 1st year Drexel – we beat 2 times
Give you kid some enthusiasm about basketball. Brad Daugherty was in our little kids program. Make the lower levels fun. I want to work so hard that we crawl of the court, cant work everyday. Structure it to have fun balanced. Winning is the most fun. It may pay dividends later. Pilot of the plan. Kyle Ballard – I always remember the real good guys and real bad guys you figure out which one you are.
I played at August National. Coach Williams – I am drawing a blank.. He was a camper. He had great camp experience. You made it fun for me at camp. All the kids, somebody son, camp will be pretend they are you sons.
We try to have fun.
Last 30 minutes of practice, we did relay races. We 3 out of 4 at practice, we couldn’t do anything. Hold on right now. We are going to be ok. We are good we are talented, it is going to be ok. Do not worry about what others think, newspaper. Really good kids do. Bad kids may not care what others think.
Tyler-after scoring 40, he spent the next day, the day off, working so hard, shooting for 2 hours. Size and work ethic send them to me.

With each pass you make the defense gets a little weaker.
Run and read the defense – if 2 or fewer are back, we are going to shoot with 2 our less passes.
If there are more than 2 we are going into our secondary.
Run after made baskets.
Get a commitment. We had players who have that commitment to run.
If we don’t score 90 we are going to track practice in the spring.
If you do not run I will be on you the first time and if you do not run the second time. You are not playing. Get commitment. It is not easy.
We start with outlet passes and getting the ball out of the net.
Big guys-making a good outlet 2 hands
If it goes through the pressure is on the inbounder to read the defense, he sees it easier. Opposite big guy goes as hard as possible to the top of the key and looks to see if the point guard has the ball, he is the emergency outlet and needs to come back.
Made or miss – rebound, guard ideally is back to the sideline top of the key. We switch sides with it.
When it comes out of the net RUN out of bounds.
Drill Coachs shoots, make or miss rebounder outlets.
1. No defense on the wing
2. Defend the outlet, run towards the ball if they can’t get it to you.
3. Rebounder outlets, runs and comes back if the point guard can’t get it.
2s and 3s are going to the the wings as fast as you can if they are on the same side the guy behind yells clear to the guy in front
We start practice
Fast break drill #1- 3 line push bounce pass, and move into outlet and through to the 3 guys in line at the other end, they change lines so they all do each spot. 30 seconds. They are in all running the middle. Passer goes to outlet on the side he passed to.

Post runs to the front of the rim
Carolina secondary, the post chase the ball and he must get it done.
Backscreen waits until it leaves the trailers hands, and then cuts to set it for the lob. Both bigs in, and cross screen in the post, the poster must go low side and get inside the defenders.

The guy who runs to the rim gets more options.
Overplay the trailer – screens down and the wing cuts catches rips and goes to that side for a post up, staggered double on the other side.

Anytime there is a lot of pressure on the players it is important for us to keep it simple, so they can read the situation. Do it considering we don’t have timeouts bc we always can adjust if we do have timeout. It is what the players know what they are doing and each other are doing.
Keep the concept of
Spacing is offense and offense is spacing..anytime there is pressure. Teach them how to play and give them space they will learn how to be good basketball players. Bc we want them to be better players, not better cutters, screens, play runners, give them space and get out of their way.
Press offense
2 guard alignment 5 ball side ½ court goes deep, 4 and 2 exchange, give the 1 man space to get open
Keep your inbound above the first marker, or you are inviting too easy of a trap.

It is more important that you make contact on screens at the end of the game, than worrying about making a moving screen foul.

In the corner – run the same as SLOB White `line down’- both backscreeners can step out and make the shot
Backcourt OB- need to get it in to the FT shooter play called .. best FT lines at the back of the line 4 and 5 cut opposite, 2 and 3 backscreeen for each other to get it one of them, screener is the best player

Everyday with a small team
3 in the paint have to get 3 rebounds consecutive to get out. A rebound needs to be a 2 hand rebound, make contact/impeade progress, and outlet it – counts as a rebound, no out of bounbs – we are not building on our practice plan unitil this is done, the group that gets it done in the least amount of numbers, sits out and they run
This is an every day thing
Every day we play 4 on 4 full court and build it around rebounding
2 baskets, +2 for and offensive rebound, 1+ for defensive rebound, -1 for a TO, -1 for foul.
Opponents may try to lure you into outside shots. That’s ok.. Best player needs to shoot it the most amount of times, 2nd player most get the next amout of shots, 3rd..etc.
The ball must still go inside, throw it in or drive it in. You must drive it in.

Change it with the posts and back pedal to the chair and get the layup
Chairs at half court- inside defense outside chair offense –both guys go 1 with the ball.. move the defense chair in based on speed
Change the chairs to the elbows for bigs
Chairs on wings- defense and offense go around the chairs, and power slide dribble (shoulders game)
Mikan style with the chairs to teach the jump hook –ten toes to the sideline, continious jump hooks, move the chairs out continious drop steps
Chairs at the elbow- player at the top of the key, fake left, go right right, pick up the ball and shoot
Reverse elbow pickup, same drill go past the chair, touch the elbow and shoot it in the middle
2 on 2 on the block stacked both ends- 1 on 1 into 3 on 3, 12 players active at one time, zig zag and then pop out…catch post feed and basket cut
