This just in: technology can benefit your relationships. Don’t believe us? Read about three simple ways those little devices can bring you closer together.

Technological advancement has been branded as the ultimate relationship breaker. Think of that couple that has cell phones and television even in the bedroom or the kids who are forever-glued to their play stations and handheld devices to the extent that they completely ignore their parents.

We live in a time when people spend hours upon hours of their days on gadgets; ultimately, leading to people drifting from each other—causing great strain on the relationships.

Perhaps technology gets a bad rap, though. We cannot fully blame technology because it’s the use (or misuse) of these gadgets that cause the strain; not the gadgets themselves. As a matter of fact, these new inventions, if used well, can be used as avenues to make the strongest relationships ever.

You might doubt, but it is possible. This is how technology can improve your relationships.

Improve Communication

Communication is a key component in any relationship. Without communication, there is no connection. Relationships suffer a lot due to lack of time to spend together due to tight schedules at work or school. Thanks to innovations, you can talk to your loved ones any day, any time. You don’t have to wait until they come home from work to talk to them: you can call them over lunch hour, tea break, any time at all.

Video calls are just one example of technology aimed at bringing people together who would otherwise struggle to maintain close bonds. Instead of missing your loved one, talk to them and see them at the same time. A wonderful tool for parents; this will help assure your children they’re still a priority when you’re away—that you still love them despite having to work.

For people in long distance relationships, technology helps bridge the distance between you and your partner. You no longer have to wait for fourteen days to get a reply to your letters: feedback is instant. What’s more is that you can even see them.

Honesty is another element that can make or break a relationship. If you find yourself in the position where you feel speak your truth face-to-face about a particular action. With digital options, you are likely to be more honest and open via text message or email than you would be when talking to the person face to face. If you’re having trouble opening up, any communication is better than no communication; use text, calls, or email as a way to bridge a gap.

That said, you have probably heard of people who ask people out or break up with them via messages. Let’s be clear: texting is never an acceptable way to break up. You both deserve better. But it can be a way to initially open the channels of of communication, to help them communicate despite shyness or fear. Use technology to improve communication skills—in turn, this will help foster stronger and better relationships.

Create Avenues for Bonding

For any relationship to thrive, the people involved must have common interests. Through technology, more hobbies have come into play. These hobbies range from the screen lovers, play stations, and computer games.

For example, if you are a man whose wife is a reality show addict, it is easy to bond with her as you watch her favorite programs together. Showing an interest in her favorites will show you care enough about her to compromise with your likes and dislikes. The same applies to children; instead of criticizing their hobbies, try joining in as they play their games. Set time aside to watch movies, play games, or text each other. A little effort can go a long way in nurturing your relationships.

Feel a sudden urge to dote on your partner? Send a sweet or sexy message to declare your love at any time: this will give them a sense of security and confidence in the love you have for each other. Plus, it’s a brilliant intimacy booster.

The Internet, of course, has proven to be a vast resource for making connections. Whether you’re networking or seeking out people with similar interests. The available niches are limitless. You can meet fellow adventurers, activists, support groups… you may even meet your soulmate online. It’s happening all the time!

Keep Updated

Another easy way to keep yourself on point in relationships is to use reminders on your phone. This will ensure you don’t forget important dates; you don’t want to be the guy who was dumped because he forgot his anniversary or his partner’s birthday. Nor do you want to be the woman who never remembers her honey’s work schedule. These may seem like minute issues, but they can cause major drama in relationships. Without making these small efforts, the other party may feel unwanted and unloved, thus causing a strain in the relationship. Setting reminders will help you keep tabs on the dates and times that matter to your partnership, thus keeping everyone happy.

Relationships are about showing commitment and care. You can’t possibly claim that a person means everything (or anything) to you if you can’t prioritize dates, times, and events that are important to them.

So, yes, technology may have been dismissed as a negative force to relationships, but it is clear that it can also become the cornerstone in the building and strengthening of these relationships. Use it moderately, cautiously, and with consideration and watch your relationships thrive.
