College of Medicine alumni will be recognized for outstanding achievement and service to The Ohio State University at the 60th Annual Medical Alumni Reunion Weekend All-Class Dinner & Award Presentation on Friday, October 18, 2013. The Medical Alumni Society presents these awards annually to deserving alumni of the College of Medicine.

Each year, the Honors and Awards Committee of the Medical Alumni Society selects alumni who are making an impact on the medical profession and the Ohio State community. Awards presented include the Alumni Achievement Award, the Early Career Achievement Award, and the Alumni Service Award.

Created in 1947, the Alumni Achievement Award is presented to an MD or resident alumnus in acknowledgement of distinguished career achievements, both in contributions to the practice of medicine and to society as a whole. This year the award is being given to Constance Benson, MD, Rebecca Jackson, MD, George Kraft, MD, and Thomas Renshaw, MD.

Dr. Benson graduated from OSU College of Medicine in 1978 and is currently a professor at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center in the Division of Infectious Diseases as well as a Senior Attending Staff Physician. After completing her medical degree, Dr. Benson went on to do her internship and residency at Rush Medical College/Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, and serve in the United States Navy Medical Corps, before completing a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Rush Medical College.  Dr. Benson served as the Principal Investigator and Chair of the NIH/NIAID AIDS Clinical Trials Group Network, and chaired the ACTG Executive Committee from 2003 to 2010. This was the largest effort by the US NIH to find treatments for HIV.

Dr. Jackson is a member of the College of Medicine class of 1978. She is now a professor of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Human Nutrition at Ohio State.  Dr. Jackson also serves as the Associate Dean for Clinical Research at the College of Medicine and the Director of The Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Research. She has been honored by with the Clinical Associate Physician Award and the Physician Scientist Award from the NIH, the Donald Unverferth Award for Research Excellence from the OSU Department of Internal Medicine, and American Medical Women's Association Local Legends Award.

Dr. Kraft, a 1963 graduate of the College of Medicine, will be celebrating his 50th Reunion in October. He began teaching at the University of Washington School Of Medicine in 1969 and is presently an Emeritus Professor. In addition, Dr. Kraft has made significant contributions to the research of Multiple Sclerosis and authored numerous books and articles.  He has been recognized for his dedication with the Frank H. Krusen Award and President’s Citation Award from the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and National Multiple Sclerosis Society, among other awards.

Dr. Renshaw graduated from OSUCOM in 1966 and is now a Field Representative for the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education as well as an Orthopaedic Surgeon, with Volunteers in Medicine in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He is also an Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine where he previously served as Director of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. Dr. Renshaw has received several awards including the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award from Yale Orthopaedics, Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award from University of Connecticut Orthopaedics and the Distinguished Service Award, from Shriner's Hospitals for Children.

The Early Career Achievement Award is given to an alumnus who has made significant career contributions in the community, or scientific and academic achievements, before the age of 40. The 2013 recipient is Colin Cooke, MD.

Dr. Cooke graduated from the College of Medicine in 2000 and is now an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan, a Staff Physician at the University of Michigan Medical Center, and serves as the primary research mentor for several medical students, internal medicine residents, and pulmonary and critical care fellows. After earning his medical degree, Dr. Cooke went on to complete his internship, residency, and fellowship at the University of Washington where he was also selected as Chief Medical Resident.  He has continued is education, earning a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the University of Washington and a Master of Science in Health and Health Care Research from the University of Michigan.  In addition, Dr. Cooke is a founding member of the American Thoracic Society Quality Improvement Committee.

The Alumni Service Award is presented to an alumnus who has displayed an extraordinary level of commitment and service to the College of Medicine of the Ohio State University medical Center. This year it was awarded to Linda Stone, MD.

Dr. Stone is a 1979 graduate of the College of Medicine and has been Special Assistant to the Dean for Humanism and Professionalism at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and an Emeritus Associate Professor of Family Medicine since 2009. Dr. Stone is the Chair of the Medicine in the Arts program and was instrumental to the development of the Humanism in Medicine Initiative. Previously, she served as the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and as advisor to numerous student groups including the Gold Humanism Honor Society, Women in Medicine, Student Council. Over the years, Dr. Stone has been awarded with the OSU College of Medicine Professor of the Year Award, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians Foundation Distinguished Service Award, and the Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, among other honors.
